    The break out thing that this game accomplishes is that you don't need to play half a dozen games to get where characters come from. Literally no overlap of characters. It's a jump in point if there ever was one.

      @davenic2471 Před 3 lety +10

      That's why everyone fell head over heals for Yakuza 0. Honestly I wouldn't call it a good "Jump in point" because it has almost nothing to do with the stories taking place before or after it. I would say Yakuza 0 is the best jump in point if you want to play the older games and the Kiwami remakes after. Yakuza 7 also is a great spot to start because like judgment it has a new cast and tone, but unlike judgment the story is heavily tied to what happened in the previous Kiryu saga games. Like a dragon is honestly my favorite in the series having played all the western releases and this point. But honestly I played all the Kiryu games out of order and never had much of an issue XD except Haruko, her story was hard to follow out of order.

    • @GameDevYal
      @GameDevYal Před 5 lety +44

      I remember reading an interesting article by a guy trying to play the Assassin's Creed game set in Italy with objective markers and some other GUI turned off for max immersion (just because the game allowed it)... and having to abandon it eventually because the game didn't give you enough in-world information for you to find your way to places. They contrasted their experiences with one of the Witcher games, which had innovations such as signs at crossroads telling you where each road led, and NPCs telling you "head right at the so-and-so landmark" when delivering the quest loredump. I suppose objective markers is just a bandaid for the "whoops, we didn't design this objective properly" problem these days...

    • @Dragonk116

      GameDevYal So true, my brain literally starts shutting down when I see an “objectives list.” I also hate the blips on the mini map but with the way games are usually designed these days it’s hard to distinguish the landscapes or mete out their significance. I was scared of the blip when I played Breath of the Wild until I veered off and ignored the objective for about 70 hours, climbing mountains, dying to Lynells, and suddenly this magical feeling opened my sensibilities back up; in the very least, objectives should help players have a basis for continuing the main story but the gameplay and world should be able to stand on its own merits without all the “objectives.” I’m playing Bloodborne right now where so many areas are actually optional that it’s actually liberating to play through everything.

      @@saintsundere I was thinking about this the other day. Shenmue had no objective markers. you actually had to learn to navigate form exploring, clues from npcs, or actually looking at the posted maps and trying to figure them out. and with the passage of actual in game time, you also had to take into consideration when something might be open, where npcs might be at that time and whatever appointments you might have. ive played that game so many times but i still find things i havent seen before by deviating from my "schedule".

      One question: In your view, is this better than Sleeping Dogs? I've not played any of the Yakuza games or Sleeping Dogs, so basically I'm deciding between this and Sleeping Dogs. The only thing I do know is Judgment is a much more recent game than S.D and I'm not a frequent gamer. Thanks in advance!

      @@enterthebruce91 I've never played Judgement yet (because it isin't on PC and my PS4 is so old it might be from the ice age) but I have played the rest of the Yakuza series AND Sleeping Dogs
      But if i'm to choose, its Judgement
      Its more entertaining and diverse combat wise and theres alot of minigames just as the video suggests. Its story is also hella fuckin' good along with side-missions that are always a blast- Yakuza series never fails in entertaining
      Now for sleeping dogs, its gameplay is pretty simple, its like assassins creed or arkham knight. But with a mix of actual combos like Yakuza to make the combat diverse and it isin't just you spamming square and circle when the game tells you to- Theres still strategy and varied combat (especially in outfits) BUT the biggest difference here is that its more GTA sandbox like
      I don't know what you want from a game, but if you want Jackie Chan hand to hand combat at its fullest then its Judgement but if its mass murder with different but limited moveset martial arts then its Sleeping Dogs
      Both in my opinion have a really good story and I never expected their twists at all so the story is in the "Good af" section
      But what wins in my book is Judgement- and its just that I easy got tired of sleeping dogs. Mass murder to me just gets dull quick

    I'm really thinking about getting into this series. Marvel's Spider Man reminded me of those fun, contained PS2 titles that are so good they feel like movies from the 80's. Yakuza seems to give off that exact vibe.

    • @dantess2693
      @dantess2693 Před 5 lety +20

      Yakuza always have this retro old school vibe. Like a successor to Shenmue. They are polished in their own way, but have that unique JRPG feel in the menus and attention to detail. Fantastic series .

    • @mravg79
      @mravg79 Před 4 lety +2

      Marvel's Spider-Man the PS4 game? I'm like 80% into this one. And in comparison to Yakuza Zero and Kiwami which I already play, I would say Spider-Man is a popcorn movie with super hero. It is good, each element is polished. It is nice to play it is fun.
      But Yakuza is something different. Have you played Sleeping Dogs? If not I highly recommend it.
      I tried Y-5 on PS3 and dropped it. Give the series another chance with Yakuza Zero (good place to start in my opinion). And this game has a lot of flaws (mostly small technical stuff). It also have cut scenes which fall into 3 categories: fully voiced and animated, or static with text. Some dialogs have voice over some others are just walls of text with characters standing in front of each other. You have to get into the world to love it. And when I got into the world it was a great game I spend like 160h in. Yakuza have a nice twisted story (spider-man i comparison is a average comic book story, while yakuza is a nice crime novel).
      Regardless of platform Yakuza Zero and Kiwami are frequent on sales (with PC having lower prices) - so since these games are specific, you might try them when they are on sale to limit the "loss" in case you will not like the game.
      Still I highly recommend Yakuza Zero! It was a prequel developed later. Kiwami is a remake of PS2 game, and when I played it it was more of the same with new story line. Still enjoyed it but it did not have such impact as Zero on me.
      Have a nice time gaming!

    *Relatively Minor Spoilers for Yakuza 0*
    8:05 I really appreciated a moment near the end of the Yakuza 0 main story, where you had to go look for Makoto, and there was no objective marker. I was really tempted to just look up her location online, but then I thought better of it and told myself, "No, I'll just try to figure this out myself." I knew she was last seen near West Park, so I went up there and found a guy who had seen her. I figured that if he saw her, there had to be someone else nearby who did as well. I found another person who said he found a cute blind girl wandering near a rough part of town, so I thought, "Where would I consider a rough part of town in a city like Kamurocho? Hmm... maybe around Ebisu Pawn." I went just northeast of Ebisu Pawn and found a man who heard a girl talking about going to some lot, and I immediately realized, "Oh! Of course. She went to the Empty Lot." I really appreciated this moment when the game let go of the reins and let me find what I needed to find by doing a little bit of investigation. It was a welcome change of pace, and still fit well in with the game and helped us to try to get inside the player character's head, I felt.

    I don't know if this is actually the case in Judgement since I don't have access to the game at this point, but the concept of "decisions you can only make while drunk" is an angle that I'm honestly surprised I haven't seen in RPGs or Immersive Sims yet. Most of the time there is no reason for a player to indulge a character's bad habits outside of maybe the occasional buffs/debuffs, so having your character being a raging drunk and actually making that have an impact on how you interact with the world could be great.

    Who knows, maybe Judgment was an experiment of some sort to see how the Yakuza series should go about change in the future -- subtle, integrated changes like those regarding Yagami's gameplay-based characterization, or lifting gameplay elements wholesale from other genres like the "detective" QTEs or environmental scanning.
    Of course, that's probably reading too much into things. Still, it would explain the discrepancy between the two ways Judgment approaches its "detective" angle.

    I have never played Yakuza, and started with Judgment because of its FIGS localisation. I have to agree that the actual detective parts of the game were perhaps the worst part, but I rather disagree when it comes to the efficacy of the Yakuza gameplay inclusions. I really liked the tone of the story, but felt that the brawling aspects were completely discordant with the idea of a detective story. I wanted desperately to have gameplay that wasn't just beating up waves upon waves of people, yet that was the crux the game rested on. Ultimately, Judgement still does an excellent job of telling its story, but the gameplay feels like something completely different. I would like to see them really try to break with the formula in the future.

      Don't worry, you can go into Judgment with no prior Yakuza knowledge. Some hints here and there that they take place in the same universe, but nothing that'll spoil the stories of that series for you.

      The Exiled Not so much a backlog, but E3 showed there are a LOT of games coming out this year and it’s a bit overwhelming. Not too mention costly of both time and money.
      Don’t get me wrong, of all the problems to have in one’s life right now, it’s hardly important. Just shocked at the selection we’ve all got this year and beginning of next. Hopefully Yakuza 3 4 & 5 are among them

      Don't worry. Judgment is a spin off. You don't need previous knowledge of the other Yakuza games to jump in its story and characters.

    Yeah, one thing that I find very annoying about the general conversation around games is that if you innovate once, and you put out a unique game, people will be constantly dogging you to reinvent the industry each and every time you come out with a new game. It's a totally unreasonable expectation. Whereas if you never innovate, and you put out nothing but factory-made multiplayer shooters each year, nobody says a word.
    I mean, instead of beating the true innovative developers down, can't you instead focus that energy in the direction of developers who have never innovated? If you're complaining about a developer who is offering something that you can't get anywhere else, then don't you think you're focusing your criticisms in the wrong place? I see this constantly, and it pisses me off. Funnily enough, the people doing this are probably THE reason we rarely see innovation, because they let the devs who don't innovate off for free, and doom the devs who do innovate with their misplaced rhetoric.

    That offset between them would be better if Kenzan didn't already introduce a non-canon version of Kiryu who was all about the value of making money.

    There's no better way to design tailing missions and I think they are necessary for this kind of game.
    To be honest I disagree with a lot of these points, to me the "mini games (QTEs)" add a bit of variety to the game.
    I don't know, it sounds very fanboy-y (although I don't defend the games that much) but even what Yakuza games does badly ends up being weirdly fun and very "PS2 era", that's somehow nostalgic. Like the whole car sequence in Yakuza 0 is so bad that it's good. The graphics sucks, the shooting mechanics sucks but it's almost a freaking parody of itself.
    All in all, I liked the on rails running mini games, I liked the drone and even though I didn't think it's GOOD, the tailing mechanics are not better or worse than any other game that does it. Assassin's Creed was built upon this "mechanic" and sure, we're tired of it but Yakuza is so good that I'm not going to complain about it, I really don't mind them.

    I just wish the buttons for the chase sequences weren't so unintuitive. I'm like "Oh hey I need to jump over this thing coming up" and instinctively mash x like an idiot. It's the pettiest gripe but I freaking adore most of the game

    I love your videos mate. Quality content as always, but I prefer not to beat around the bush on this particular subject. This damn team's been making the same fucking game for over a decade, & I'm not saying this as someone who magically discovered Yakuza 0. I've played this franchise since the first ps2 game. SEGA has a history of mishandling its IPs to such a degree, that it's a miracle this shitty company is still alive today.
    They couldn't even help themselves when they got the Fist OTNS license. Just slapped the skin on a Yakuza game, and called it a day. At a point, when the best the devs can do is go back, and remake the older titles, you really have to wonder how redundant you can get. Why would any other dev want to copy the Yakuza formula? Devs like Rockstar are lightyears ahead with open world immersion, and NPC interactions. Once you wash away the joy of a stylised look into contemporary Japanese culture, you get to see a dated title PS2 level animations, and map design. The sum of all parts fit, but nothing individually holds its own. The combat is dated as hell with little to no challenge. You're still watching endless cutscenes, and scrolling walls of exposition. Gameplay isn't remotely seamless, and it's riddled with QTEs. if this formula was followed by any other reputable dev, they'd be laughed out of the room.
    Once you peel back the layers, and get past the allure: You'd be borderline shocked at how dated a lot of the game design is in the Yakuza games. It's almost hilarious that some people screech about Activision and EA annual releases, but latch onto SEGA rehashes without any ounce of self awareness.
