  • Have a non-skid boat deck that never seems to get clean?
    In this tutorial I'll show you how to clean, compound and seal your non-skid. Taking the time to do this is extremely beneficial. These simple steps will cut your clean up time by more than half!
    WAXING NON SKID WILL NOT MAKE THE DECK SLIPPERY!!!
    Waxed non skid being slippery is simply not true. When I say non skid, I'm talking about the diamond patterned non skid found on most boats. It's the pattern that keeps it from being slippery. Not having a sealed surface is just asking for drift and grim to stain the surface. After following the steps in this video you will on your way to not worrying about annoying deck stains!

    Just want to thank you for taking the tine to post this video. I started this process yesterday on my 26' boat, will finish today and your technique works great. Everything looks better than new. This should make cleanup after an outing alot easier. No more blackstreaks or stains anywhere.

    I'm a new detailer, mostly automotive. But I do have a nautical background and know boat so I did my first boat detail the other day. Although I got the boat super clean I would have loved to compound and wax the topside. Client didn't want that. (Maybe next time he takes it out he'll realize it's worth the time and money.) I'll employ these tips for the next client!

    I work for CNB here in France as a Finisher. It's a Luxury boat construction firm and I'm working on the seventy7 and seventy8 models (largest and longest).
    I just wanted to let you know that if you buff / polish non-skid areas on your boat, they lose their "grit" (ability to stop you from skidding on it). I'd suggest you ask people getting on your boat to either have special shoes or go bare-feet when on the boat, and then cleanup is as simple as using a pressure washer with just warm water or acetone (or another product you think works).
    Also, waxing gelcoat makes it slippery. Which is why we wax molds before gelcoating them.

    • @Captkylejohnson
      @Captkylejohnson  Před 5 lety +1

      P5ykoOHD I agree for other kinds of non skid. This diamond pattern is not slippery after doing this. It’s the pattern itself that makes it non skid. I’ll do a video soon to show that’s it’s not slippery after waxing. I can’t speak for any other type of non skid though. I’m sure other types would be insanely slippery.

    That rotary brush has sharp teeth and they scratch off the hard gel coat shell and allow porous internal material to be exposed. This allows dirt to easily get absorbed.
    ProPolish contains an oil that quickly seals these pores but it evaporates and disappears quickly when in the sun. You need to use something with a hard ceramic matrix. Use wool or soft foam pad and polish to remove oxidized wax and gel coat.

I am a little confused about the polish questions? 6 months ago Linda Zambelli asked what polish you used and you replied that you didn’t use polish because it would make the non-skid too slippery. At 11:40 and 13:10 I “think” you talk about adding a pro polish? I think I am confused or maybe I am just confused on what the best product to use?

      Shurhold "wax" or "sealant" calls it a "polish." If you compounded it and used an actual polish it would be extremely slippery.

  • @thebutler7284
    @thebutler7284 Před 4 lety +3

    A waxed nonskid will bust your ass..
    However you never applied wax or a sealer
    Polish is shine not protection
    Wax is protection not shine
    You could follow up with a dupont sealer or a wax but you will slip and slide
    When you polish gelcoat and dont seal it, oxidation will begin that hour, immediately.
    As small as your boat is, you should be able to take off all marks and scuffs in non skid with Magic erasers.
    great video, love boats (Hit The Like)

Im going to try to the star brite, I already the exact polisher (I also do paint & body work) along with Maguire's and see how it work. just quick clarification, compound originally is used as a cleaner not a sealer so are saying the compound will seal the surface from dirt or at least repel it? thanks for the video .

But I use a Marine 31 One step heavy cut cleaner wax. it cuts like heavy compound but finished out to a nice shine and waxes at the same time to eliminate the Pro polish step. Ive used pro polish before when waxing hulls but i wasnt overly impressed. if im going to do a two step process id use a compound but my wax of choice is meguiars premium flagship wax, goes on very easy and wipes off effortlessly.

    I guess I was led wrong after I bought my boat in 2013. I was told to use the StarBrite every time we clean the boat, which is after every time I use it. I've had it covered in the back yard through the winter and uncovered it this past weekend. The first thing I noticed was the smell of cat pee (or maybe squirrel). I thought I had it sealed up but apparently not. I knew I could get the smell out, but I've got a long orange streak running from the console back to the transom. I took the batteries out early last fall to replace them. I bought the new batteries but didn't install them until this weekend. So no batteries in place for 4 months. Starbrite wouldn't take up the orange streak nor the gray spots right in front of the console (the batteries sit right under the steering wheel/console. Sorry for the long story, but do you know what might get rid of that orange streak and the gray patches? Starbrite didn't phase them.

      Tommy Liu yes, I used the same brush. I took the brush off polisher and cleaned it in a bucket of water with dawn soap. It got all the compound off. It all depends on the sealant (or wax) you used and how often you use your boat. This was the longest lasting I found before ceramic coating. Ceramic coating very easy to apply and outlast anything else I’ve used so far. Putting up a video very soon about DIY ceramic coat.

      I did it on an overcast day because I didn't have anywhere to do it out of the sunlight. I wouldn't do it in direct sunlight. It will most likely make things much harder.

      Jason Beard it didn’t last that long honestly, but I was in a rush and only had time to do one coat. Only did one coat of ceramic on my hull and inside and it last a solid 9 months with real world use and heavy fishing. The ceramic lasted maybe 4 months on the nonskid.
