    Awesome video. I have found recently in my own play the importance of strategy and course management in lowering your scores. I think this is as helpful, or moreso, than technique a lot of times considering most amateurs can't practice as often as they would like. More videos like this are always welcomed!

    Hey Neil, love the new series, great work. I’m 18 handicap, for me the 1st hole would be 7 or 8 iron to take out right hand bunkers, wedge on, 2 putt, net birdie, marvellous!!!! Would be nice to have a higher handicapper in the videos, but probably not that good for your stats. Keep up the good work, awesome 3 iron off the 1st tee

    I'm new to golf and was looking forward to some useful info I can take to the course, but surely this is stating the bleeding obvious? And having watched a few of these 'strategy' videos they all seem to assume we can all hit the ball exactly were we want to. Well Here's my golden nugget: avoid hazards and spend nearly all of your practice time on your short game. If this video demonstrates anything it's that having a great short game will get you ot of trouble when you are off target.

  • @beefiron
    @beefiron Před 4 lety +3

    That first hole felt more like a lesson in what not to do. Neil's 'lay-up' brought the bunkers into play (although he avoided them) and left him with a pitch length he wasn't comfortable with. Surely a lay-up strategy here would have been 170 (short of the trouble), then 100 (full, stress-free 56 degree wedge)?

  • @robertreese6999
    @robertreese6999 Před 5 lety +1

    Some great insights from Clive, thank you Sir. I think Neil must be "playing for the camera" - no way a 5 hcp doesn't know how far his irons go on full, 3/4 and half swing etc. Thanks for the video, interesting ideas to take away.

    a 275 yard 3-iron?!

  • @touristguy87
    @touristguy87 Před 5 lety +1

    the 1st hole is a great example of why distance to the green is hardly the sole factor or even the most important factor in determining how easy a hole is. From the flyover you can see how narrow the green is, and how there are 4 bunkers guarding the front and front sides of the green, trees hard on each side and a cart-path with an open space behind the green. But again the center of the green is 271 yards from the tee they're playing.
    Question: can you accurately put a shot 225+ almost directly down the center of the fairway? Yes or no? If not then you're just likely to hit into trouble going for the green. Your "birdie opportunity" is hitting short and left of the green but not so far left that you'd have to play through or around the trees guarding the left side of the green. Basically 200 yds off the tee and 75 yds to the green. This is a classic "more risk than reward" hole in terms of going for the green off the tee..

      If you're going to bring the fairway bunkers into play you might as well knock it over them and bring the greenside bunkers in to play instead.
      The lay up would be a 5 or 6 iron and leave yourself 100 in... But then it's easy to type and harder to do!

  • @touristguy87
    @touristguy87 Před 5 lety

    18:46 of course there's a greenskeeper mowing that dried-out fairway
    The problem here on the 2nd shot is very simple. Getting the ball over the ditch without spinning it into the trees left and right-front of the green and you really REALLY don't want to slice out to the right. Again it's a long shot to the green through a narrow lane bordered by trees, with the pin all the way in the back of the green, no less, and the green is a good 6ft up. But this course is so dry it's like playing on dirt and I'd really wonder why they even bother playing it. Still it will be interesting to see how much they fuck up this approach shot.

  • @creamabdul-jabbar6722

  • @MrBonified66
    @MrBonified66 Před 5 lety +1

    Why lay up to 70 yards short of the green where there's a bunker? There's no point complaining about the bounce when you end up in there. Lay up to 100-110, whatever's a full wedge.

      It is a links course with dry ground. That makes for a roll on of 50 yards. If you hit a three iron and you land our 7 at 150 you would hit it to land it at 190 with 50 yards roll makes 220. This is very average.
