Who really benefits from war? | UpFront

- “It's the old Latin slogan, Cui Bono, who benefits? Going all the way back to the wars you could name in the last century,” says Pentagon Papers whistleblower and renowned anti-war activist, Daniel Ellsberg.
In 1971, Ellsberg, then a military analyst, leaked to the press a 7,000-page top secret Pentagon study, uncovering years of official lies about United States military involvement in the Vietnam War.
Ellsberg, and many like him, hoped that these revelations could change how the world viewed war. But decades later, with conflicts raging in Ukraine, Yemen and Ethiopia, to name a few, the decision-making process behind wars remains murky as ever.
So who is benefitting from these wars?
War is “very profitable for the people who are supplying those weapons to keep it going”, Ellsberg says.
This week, Pentagon Papers whistleblower, anti-war activist and author Daniel Ellsberg joins Marc Lamont Hill for an UpFront special looking at the biggest players behind the global war machine.
"Guns need wars and wars need excuses" - Eduardo Galeaño.
There is never a lack of "reasons" for war. The fat American defence secretary is set to pocket even more millions through his profiteering links to arms industries.
Ageed! But keep in mind the "war machine" requires funds (a lot of $$$$) to stay alive.
@@TheDude-xg4dr Isn't that the point?
@@rawlsrules Yes. Money , Power and Nationalism is behind everything it seems. I work in the Aerospace industry in Ethiopia. Same in the USA?

You just can’t make obscene windfall profits under peace. The economy is geared for war. I’d guess the fact is that more people make more money under peace.
Yep, I always said that peace is very bad for businesses. Peace is more like a cleanup service called after someone makes a big mess.

It's incredible how much real news comes from outside our countries!
Most of our media is controlled by the government. We're nearly as bad as Ukraine, Russia, and China.
Yes, we are already living in a dictatorship. Without
the Net we would know much less then now.
That was truth talk. You don't hear those in the know talk with such courage in the media.
Great interviewee and interviewer. I am constantly impressed by the quality of journalism at Al Jazeera. Very much deserved their award for Best New Network in 2022. I will never forget that George Bush tried to shut them down due to their reporting during the Iraq war, labelling them as “terrorists”.
You should watch their Arabic language news channel. They literally have terrorists on promoting mass murder on a regular basis on their Arabic language news channel. You’re being played for a fool. Learn Arabic and see why the Middle East is drenched in blood 🩸
Yes! Ifully agree and feel this one story has really helped help fill some important gaps in my own understanding of how the world works (or shall I say operates😀). That's said, I can't help wondering: What's in it for Qatar or al Jazeera to enlighten me? Hopefully its just insightful journalism is a profitable niche part of the media space and doing it well helps them secure a larger market share of it, but I wonder if the there's some value in my increased level of disconent with the military industrial complex and their plausible glee at a prolonged conflict that makes them billions?
They learned the correct lesson: the more wars the profitable it is.
- "indispensable enemy" means "profitable enemy"

Daniel Ellsberg should be interviewed by more media outlets. Good interview. Thx
The fact he isn't interviewed on msm tell you all you need to know.
This should be required viewing-especially for Americans!
Really good interview. Sheds so much light on our foreign policy mess.
My great respect to you Daniel. Hope more people do listen your point of view. We all need to wise up to say "no" to puppet masters. Quality of journalism. 10/10 for All Jazeera.
Excellent interview and congratulations Mark Lamont Hill this platform is a more suitable one for you.

Thank you for such a informative interview
War benefits very much people in power or connected to it.while peace benefits many ordinary people who tool everyday.
Wonderful man. Just what we need at times like this.
Absolutely sickening ... " From whence come wars and fightings? From your Lusts .... " The greed and depravity of men willing to inflict pain and suffering on others for profit.. they sow the wind and will harvest the whirl wind
As long as the people who are forced to fight and die in the wars have no say in how governments use their military power there will always be wars. Most of us don't want to kill fight or die, we just want to live our lives and be left in peace, not pieces.
The fact that militaries exist their will be war! All wars are the aggressor going in to take what the aggressor wants! They have no value of life only the oppressors and those that are all involved their mob!
Sadly we are lied to from the moment we go to school. The claims that our military is here to protect us is a huge one!
Couldent say it better🕊️🕊️🕊️
Exactly BoggWeasel; so true- you are spot on.

Excellent. The best interview I have heard on this issue till now, dealing with almost all its aspects. It should be shared among the broadest mass of auditors over the world to realize the truth.

Very compelling, Al Jazeera! Ellsberg looks to hold the vital piece that flummoxed journalists like Stephen Cohen who was beside himself about the inability of the US to ally with Russia, which so many other analysts say is in our strategic interest...even when Russia wanted to work with the US, as in Syria, we could not even manage detente.
Actually Stephen Cohen was a professor and scholar. He wrote a lot of articles which were published on the Nation and other media outlets.

Indispensable enemy. I almost fell out of my chair when I heard Ellsberg say that phrase.
Why weren't American politicians publicly exposed with the Panama papers? The release of the Panama Papers was of little value in exposing powerful people.
It exposed them plenty but somehow got swept under some rug. Guess it wasn’t anything illegal. Just f*cking disgusting and no law against that…

Well, check out the 2019 feasibility study "Overextending and Unbalancing Russia" by RAND Corporation, one of the largest and most influential strategic thinktanks, advisory to the Pentagon and the US military industrial complex. In many regards it reads like a playbook to what is happening at the moment.
USA has had this conflict clocked from the jump while Putin was too deluded to realize he was walking into a buzzsaw. Unfortunately I highly doubt China will be this stupid.
What was in that study, can you summarise for us here?
Wow, this interview changed the way I persee the world and the role of modern war... Just... Wow.
I think someone of his knowledge, experience and good conscience should be the adviser of a country's leader and should be interviewed more by news channels to get opinions regarding wars.

Great staff.
A sobering interview! Indeed the first question we need to ask ourselves in wars has to be Cui Bono?
It's a chilling reminder that supposedly democratic countries don't act in the interest of their citizens, but they serve the interests of lobbies. Whether the lobbies of Arms industry in wars, or the interests of oil and gas lobbies when it comes to decisions on the climate change.
Finally, the elephant in the room
Answer: Americans oligarchs
Wars are big business and there's lots countries companies who are billions of dollars and they don't care about how many people who dies or suffer. More war is more billions and that's is tragic .

A Message From General George S Patton Jr Neice
What a thoughtful conversation
I would only take issue with the comment about the press in Russia. The media in that country is far less restricted than that of the US today.
No this is not true. Russia has far more censorship especially when it relates to politics and the war.
The absurdity of everything that got anything to do with weapons
They call it production when it’s nothing more than destruction. They say it builds strength in young men but it ether kills them or too often sends them home messed up physically and mentally. They say it’s so awesome for its technological development but can’t even build the technology to combat global warming. They can’t even admit there is global warming. They say its all about defense but funny how quick they are to find an enemy. They say it’s a matter of making the nation stronger even as they bleed US of our domestic infrastructure and services, and seconds from termination on the doomsday clock. War is a racket and a Lie! We are a fool of a species to be so dependent on it. War No More!

Pentagon Papers must be studied in every military schooling ..
It's complicated! But human nature is definitely at the core, the motivating factor. But it's better to seek to understand and gain co-operation from those who we deem the threat than it is to surreptitiously and deceitfully deploy and ultimately employ the use of armed forces.
As Ellsberg said, Russia is an indispensable enemy to justify arms contracts. In the years after the collapse of the Soviet Union, Russia was still ignored, barred from entering NATO, denied from helping in the war against terror that the USA promoted in the middle east, etc. Just as if Russia was groomed to become an enemy...
EDIT: By denying Russia cooperation and integration in Europe and Western civilization, we turned them an enemy. The same is happening in China. One could argue that Russia and China commits war and humanitarian crimes against their populations or others in occupied areas, so they are an enemy... But so does the Western nations, not only in others countries, but to their own population

The people have Stockholm syndrome
With respect human nature is not at its core, as less than 20% of soldiers in any war shoot to kill. In WW2 45000 bullets were expended for a single death, in Vietnam the figure was 50,000. The vast amount of casualties are from artillery and aerial bombardment. Citizens hate war, its the handful of psychopaths, who are essentially bullies that make our lives a misery
Preaching about democracy while killing for profit! It is such a tragedy!
I forgot who said it but the quote "How do you expect peace if you don't want to talk to your enemy?" seems to be the last thing on the agenda. Everyone is approaching issues from different extremes making any attempt to achieve a compromise of any sort and any matter dead on arrival. Not to mention that any attempt from a leader to even acknowledge the other sides position let alone strike a dialogue will automatically and very bizarrely imply that the leader is "weak" and thus not worthy of office. This goes both domestically and internationally.
