Who really benefits from war? | UpFront

  • “It's the old Latin slogan, Cui Bono, who benefits? Going all the way back to the wars you could name in the last century,” says Pentagon Papers whistleblower and renowned anti-war activist, Daniel Ellsberg.
In 1971, Ellsberg, then a military analyst, leaked to the press a 7,000-page top secret Pentagon study, uncovering years of official lies about United States military involvement in the Vietnam War.
Ellsberg, and many like him, hoped that these revelations could change how the world viewed war. But decades later, with conflicts raging in Ukraine, Yemen and Ethiopia, to name a few, the decision-making process behind wars remains murky as ever.
So who is benefitting from these wars?
War is “very profitable for the people who are supplying those weapons to keep it going”, Ellsberg says.
This week, Pentagon Papers whistleblower, anti-war activist and author Daniel Ellsberg joins Marc Lamont Hill for an UpFront special looking at the biggest players behind the global war machine.

Wars are big business and there's lots countries companies who are billions of dollars and they don't care about how many people who dies or suffer. More war is more billions and that's is tragic .

They call it production when it’s nothing more than destruction. They say it builds strength in young men but it ether kills them or too often sends them home messed up physically and mentally. They say it’s so awesome for its technological development but can’t even build the technology to combat global warming. They can’t even admit there is global warming. They say its all about defense but funny how quick they are to find an enemy. They say it’s a matter of making the nation stronger even as they bleed US of our domestic infrastructure and services, and seconds from termination on the doomsday clock. War is a racket and a Lie! We are a fool of a species to be so dependent on it. War No More!

It's complicated! But human nature is definitely at the core, the motivating factor. But it's better to seek to understand and gain co-operation from those who we deem the threat than it is to surreptitiously and deceitfully deploy and ultimately employ the use of armed forces.

As Ellsberg said, Russia is an indispensable enemy to justify arms contracts. In the years after the collapse of the Soviet Union, Russia was still ignored, barred from entering NATO, denied from helping in the war against terror that the USA promoted in the middle east, etc. Just as if Russia was groomed to become an enemy...
EDIT: By denying Russia cooperation and integration in Europe and Western civilization, we turned them an enemy. The same is happening in China. One could argue that Russia and China commits war and humanitarian crimes against their populations or others in occupied areas, so they are an enemy... But so does the Western nations, not only in others countries, but to their own population

With respect human nature is not at its core, as less than 20% of soldiers in any war shoot to kill. In WW2 45000 bullets were expended for a single death, in Vietnam the figure was 50,000. The vast amount of casualties are from artillery and aerial bombardment. Citizens hate war, its the handful of psychopaths, who are essentially bullies that make our lives a misery

I forgot who said it but the quote "How do you expect peace if you don't want to talk to your enemy?" seems to be the last thing on the agenda. Everyone is approaching issues from different extremes making any attempt to achieve a compromise of any sort and any matter dead on arrival. Not to mention that any attempt from a leader to even acknowledge the other sides position let alone strike a dialogue will automatically and very bizarrely imply that the leader is "weak" and thus not worthy of office. This goes both domestically and internationally.
