- Marc Lamont Hill challenges former head of Israeli navy and former director of Israel’s security service Ami Ayalon.
After five months of Israel’s brutal bombing campaign and siege of Gaza, which has killed more than 30,000 Palestinians and seen Israel facing a genocide case at the International Court of Justice, negotiations continue and a ceasefire may be imminent.
In the meantime, the humanitarian situation in Gaza is intensifying with shortages of food, water and basic medicine. And as people near starvation, there are reports of people eating grass and animal feed to survive.
Can Israel realistically achieve its objectives? And will there be accountability for any war crimes committed?
On UpFront this week, Marc Lamont Hill interviews Ami Ayalon, former commander-in-chief of the Israeli navy and former director of Israel’s security service, about Israel’s violations of international law in its war on Gaza.

Honestly, I felt the same about the interviewer, too. I know interviews are usually run on a strict time table, but does it really hurt to let the other side finish, even if you disagree with them? Basically he says Hamas wanted Israel to kill them. This is some mental gymnastics.
Actually he said Hamas wanted to use Palestinian civilians because they knew if (as we've seen for the last few months) the IDF will kill innocents, if they can blame trying to kill an Hamas agent. This was going to clearly get the majority of the world to see this for what it is, war crimes and atrocities. Then majority of the world will condemn Israel (and justifiably so) and in so doing Hamas wins.
It's playing against Netanyahu's weakness and Zionist desire - he cannot see that if he just stops killing brings in aid to the civilians and opens the way for negotiations - then Israel's reputation will not stay in the toilet. Israel will lose it's home if they continue down this warpath. And that will be on Netanyahu.
