In this episode we fix the most common thing on our Land Rover Discovery 3: The suspension bushings. The front bushings typically fail every 100t km, the rear ones about every 150t km. The repair is easy if you do it the right way.

I have never had a Land Rover, yet every week I find myself watching your videos - it must be the engineer in me! However, this weeks video absolutely draws a line under LR for the vast majority of mere mortals - most of whom could never have the workshop, tooling, skills and access to a 50-ton press that you have! You know, we don't have access to tools, and stuff, just like that. We bought every single tool we own and paid for it, like everyone else has the chance, if they want to. And believe me, it cost a lot of money. But it's worth to us as we love to spent our free time together. As with the 50 ton press. One hand washes the other. As a fellow LR3 owner (2005 SE) I am glad to see I am not the only who gets as frustrated working with my crazy LR3. I dumb enough to own a Disco II, which is even crazier to work on. Thanks for the videos and the education.

As a youngster my parents took us to Heidelberg as part of a camping holiday I don't remember much about the castle but the Apothecary's museum and its exhibits have stuck in my mind even after 60 years.
I thought that was Heidelberger Schloss in the opening! I was lucky enough to visit it in the 80’s, beautiful.

Use Advanced Factors. They do superb HD ones
Many happy returns Vera, I hope you requested a suitably sized wine barrel for your gift. Spot on with the bush orientation and tightening height, you should not have any problems for quite a while....
I love to see like me you learn the correct method and realise all the mistakes on the first side then do the second side completely different.

It’s a pain in the ass to replace bushings. That’s why most mechanics recommend replacing the entire control arm. Big credit to Christian and Vera for doing such a hard job.

Happy 39th Birthday Vera! This was an interesting job - certainly a big one. It would be interesting if Christian could comment on the approximate cost of having the work done in the main dealers when he does big jobs like this. Also at the end of the year he could total it up for both the mall crawler and Vera's adventure wagon.
We had about 200€ on the Mall Crawler in 22 and 1700€ on my Discovery 3. But that includes the 300€ FAI oilpump we had to replace again. A big chunk of that is for oil. 🙋♀️Vera
@@Vera_and_Christian the oil change and filter on my v70 2015 costs two hundred pounds every year, (done by the dealer), so yes motor oil is pretty expensive but what can you do?
Love this, I'm sure many workshops will just replace the entire arm and not the bushes so nice to see it done properly, just need to fit a 50 tonne press under your house now guys 😆

Once again, the Dynamic Duo of Christian & Vera prove to us all that maintenance of a Land Rover Discovery 3 is no joke! Well-done! And thanks so much for the footage of the castle and family, that was very interesting. Near where I work there used to be an German restaurant called "Old Heidelberg" where the entrance was a (much smaller) wine barrel. The restaurant was featured in the movie "Fast Times At Ridgemont High". It's now an Italian restaurant called "Barone's". Anyways, next castle for you to visit should be the Schloss Adler (must say it in a Richard Burton accent).

For pressing the bushings, it helps if you keep them in the freezer for 30 minutes before mounting. They contract and go in much easyer (just don't tell my whife I do this...)

Love seeing the bushing removal, as many have said most mechanics replace the entire arm. Wish I had the equipment / time to do this, but being in Australia I spend all my time at the beach or in the bush 😊

Christian - a man of your talent, how could you forget pre-load when working on your suspension??! Not having access to a press is why many of us just replace the whole arm (wishbone) - it's not sooo much more expensive given we're not paying labour and garage margins on parts. The suspension on my Alfa GT is made of chocolate and needs rebuilding every couple of years - I'd go mad if I replaced bushes instead of the (cheap) complete arm each time. Next 2 jobs on our D3 - replace fuel pump belt in situ and replace ( probably) headlining....
I don’t know if I forgot. They failed again and typically the rear lower last 180 t km. We had bad luck with aftermarket arms before. Check our fuel pump belt video. One of the first ones. Christian

Happy birthday Vera 🥂. Really appreciate the tip about using armoured vehicle suspension bushings. Had mine replaced a couple of years ago and they failed in a few weeks. Bad squeaking. I asked if they tightened at normal ride height, so they did for sure the second time and no problem since.

We have some castles over here, we can't blame the French for their demise though. The Welsh coastal Castles are brilliant and the driving along the coast is well worth the trip.
