- Am I a hack? I couldn't figure out how to remove road tar, so I kept going after different formulas. Super Clean; Meguiar's Wheel Brightener; even Iron X . . . nothing was making a dent. But then, the skies parted, and down from above came a miracle! Lol -- what do you guys think? What do YOU use for road tar?!

Well done. Appreciate how you get to the point.
Great video. I’ve had a few like this. Lighter fluid did the job for Me.
You inspired me to do the few small road tar spots down below. Thanks
I love this guys enthusiasm !!
i use lacquer thinner also.but i think i will try mineral spirits.great video keep them coming.God Bless!!!!!
Thanks Dusty!
Thanks for the video. I just ran through some tar yesterday that is worse than this Denali.
Cool video showing the tough job don’t see it a lot on CZcams thanks for taking the time. Apex video introduced me to citrol 266 love to see mineral vs 266 which one is better if you have the time
hey Matt! dude I love citrol but I had run out at the time of this job. it's crazy you can do 50 cars and never need it...then kick yourself for not having the necessary tool or chemical in the moment! and then as a detailer you spend all this money on products and the customer wants a full detail for $50😂
@@HawkProDetailing lol bro, I told someone the other day, "I do this part time, and I make $40/hour monday through friday at my regular job, for this to worth it I gotta make more than that per hour" should've seen his expression.
use GYEON TAR works for me all the time. spray wait 2 mins and wipe. and or repeat. or spray down an towel whit tar and place in on the panel whit magnets
As a kid, I saw some workmen tarring the road so I went to help them and of course, went home covered in tar. My Mother asked what could she use to remove it and they said use butter which did work
I had a Honda fit completely cover. It's in my earlier photos . I used a product called 330 . And power washer . Came out flawless

For a few days I have several barely visible tar points. But I will go on vacation for 3 weeks during which time I think other bitumen points will buildup.
It is ok to wait 3-4 weeks and remove tar after returning from vacation or should I remove them immediately in order not to damage the paint?
Nice work! Super labor intensive for sure! Did you do this prior to a full wash or after? I go to Citrol 266 for anything left over that my pre-treat, wash, and decon couldn't get. Sometimes Citrol on a magic eraser too! (really good for paint transfer removal)
yeah I didn't go into it but I did pretty much a wash, clay and THEN this. I followed up with paint prep and jescar power lock
I use laquer thinner everyday. Followed by a buff and polish. Never had a bad experience.
Check my Instagram dedicateddetailingllc
Great job!!! I’ve been trying to figure out how to remove this!!! I’m gonna try it! Did it do any damage to the paint?
Nope all good
I work as a detailer at a car wash and thats exactly what we use to remove stains that the sponges wont remove its the fastes solution for us that have to keep moving on to cars. I didnt think about the spray bottle tho good idea
nice! yeah lots of people commenting about it here--it seems to be a fairly common solution:)
Awesome job man! I also once removed yellow road paint that was dried after a few months with Lacquer thinner. It was the only way to remove it quickly and effectively. Like we spoke about, yes these products will soften the clear coat a little, but its temporary, we have to do what we have to do! 😎
thanks man! I appreciate the wisdom🤓 I'll bet lacquer thinner would have been even faster.
@@HawkProDetailing Yep, just used lacquer thinner on some 3 week old tar that spun off my tires, just like the movie, gone in 60 seconds! No residue left on the paint, wiped it off with some wash water and boom, Jeb's your uncle.
Did you try a dedicated tar remover? Carpro TarX works pretty well as does Stoners, and Citrol. ? This is pretty common here in farm country.
Nick! Did you even try something like Citrol? It's worked great for me when removing road tar from the paint.
I didn't have any citrol at the time! Now I do:)
Lacquer thinner. Don't be afraid. Use it all the time for dealership detailing. No fuss, just straight to the point.
Citrix degreaser melts it right away and is safe! Phil & I are in the same area👍🏽
sweet! yessir I love the online. community I'm meeting through youtube
Might have to try this I have some tarpon my honda but not like this car here..
I love your enthusiasm !!!thats a brutal job. I would have gone straight to thinner....
thanks man!! this was a pretty tricky job. I later learned she had driven right over a FRESHLY PAVED road -- she said there were no workers to guide her around so next thing she knew...she was in the hot gooey tar and had to just keep driving. I think that made this tar situation a bit unique
Hawk Pro Detailing definitely like watching your videos!
Awesome video!
Rapid remover full strength, let sit a few min, pressure wash, to get bulk off. Them gently rub RR and continue to rinse. I just did a Lexus LS like that and it worked well. It had road paint too, fun, fun...
Yep! 👍that stuff is an ass kicker.
Spirit or paint remover. Awesome idea
Thanks for tip bro...
So this stuff won't damage the paint?
my right enjoyed this very much
Diesel works very well and may be easier on the clear used to use it to clean of liquid asphalt off tanker trailers
Yeah but no many ppl wanna deal with the mess and odor of that fuel
@@riskyviews5213 I always used a degreaser after but I was cleaning trailers that in some cases had a very bad spill and diesel was the only thing that would cut through it 8+ inches of asphalt
Great job man 👍🏼👍🏼
thanks my man!
I was talking to Miranda yesterday about your carpet cleaning techniques!!! I just did a car and I had a hard time trying to remove stains he tells me about the products you use and I will try them 😁👍🏼
Would sticky stuff remover work do you think it's solvant based I normally use it on adhesive that's left behind on my retro games I collect and there cardboard?
it sure might. but yeah mineral spirits are pretty easy to find...some people use lacquer thinner as well
How did you get rid of the brown residue???
Citrial 266! I have it in the aerosol can and I just spray it on and come back in about two minutes and the tar is literally melting away and running down the car panel was one of the craziest things the first time I did was in shock. You gotta try it. I haven’t cleaned this much tar off a vehicle before but I’m telling you right now that’s your best choice. I think it’s like 18$ on amazon. I use it for tar or even adhesive on the paint little to no effort! I’m actually getting low I’m about to buy it by the gallon it’s that good.
I just commented the samething (266) before I saw your post. That will make quick work of it.
bobbymorgret that it will buddy! He should do this video over again with the 266
18 bucks ain't cheap. I hope the gallon jug is a big savings. Is the gallon available on Amazon by a certain seller you'd recommend? Thanks
Good job I Try using kerosene or disel to remove tar it’s a good Solvent
OMG wonder if it works with tar that's been there through the winter
Omg.. that's a nightmare detail job.. like someone was doing donuts in an asphalt pit.. great job!
Thank you for the content
You got it brother
Where can I buy these mineral spirits in the U.K
Wow amazing joob ...good working
thanks! it was pretty stressful actually until I found the winning combination. the tough part was I KNEW of pro products that I could order online that would work...but I just needed something in that moment that would get me results since i didn't have a few days to wait for product in the mail lol
Thanks for showing this. I tried using a steam cleaner and it did not work. I’m gonna try this instead.
Odorless mineral spirits doesn't soften clear coat. It's the same active ingredient in many wax and grease removers, and some waxes and sealants.
Also lacquer thinner is clear coat safe as well. Clear coat is highly, highly, chemical resistant. You can test this with a test hood.
dude thank you so much for clarifying that -- maybe I thought it had more punch. What's your go to for tar?
@@HawkProDetailing Typically Goof Off, which is Acetone & Xylene mix. Or Lacquer Thinner.
My neighbor uses lacquer thinner to remove tar off vehicles and has been in the body shop industry for over 30 years and hasn't had any issues with it. He said not to use it on older paints as they're not as chemical resistant as newer ones.
So I guess we'll need to re wax the car after we use odorless mineral spirits??
@@Hundert1 Until he gets more tar on the bodywork.
Been using mineral spirit for years
It's after the fact now but you might try the Superior Products Super Blue tar removal product if this craziness ever presents itself again.
What about kerosene use would that work ?
Nice. Still image of this video showed up when I googled what to use to get tar off. It was a still image of the super clean purple bottle. So I used it since I had it at home…then the video plays and you say not to use it. Ugh. Well my brand new truck still looks ok.
Respect sir! 👍
Fast and effective way to take tar off is to use H79👍🏼 did it yesterday👌🏼
What is H79?
Did you use the odorless mineral spirits on the wheel well and the black plastics? I have a similar situation and got it off the paint with clay bar ( I also have PPF), now it’s still in wheel well and on/under running board.
You might try a product called "Eulex" from koch chemie. Worth buying on a site like autoality.com or detailed image and waiting a week for it to ship to you. It's smelly but amazing. Tar is a beast and I've never found a better product. Mineral spirits work but...it's a lot of work lol
@@HawkProDetailing Thanks for the quick response. I guess I should also ask what tool should I use? The PPF was difficult, but cleaned with clay bar..now it’s the scrubbing of the wheel well and the under side/hard plastic of the running boards..it’s a 21 GLE 350.
@@HawkProDetailing I’m looking at 3:24 - 3:32 of your video..that’s what I’m dealing with
WD40 all the way. I work with asphalt everyday and WD or Baby oil will dissolve it. Just let it sit on it for a couple mins.
Fuck yeah, just tried your method and it worked pretty much instantly. Cheers mate
You’re the man! I bought a new car and stupidly bought cheap tire spray. Applied it after a wash and drove home only to get out and see black speckles all over my white paint! Frantically searching CZcams I came across this video and your comment… pulled the baby oil out and went to work. It came off instantly! Thanks for your comment because you saved me a trip to the store buying every car cleaner they had 🤣
Thanks for the tip
Tried WD40, no good!
WD-40 not safe for the cars paint
Hi man.
It looks like some sort of petrol or some derivated.
Here in Brazil we have some called "óleo de linhaça".
I tried google translate and it gives me
"linseed oil" as result, but I'm not sure.
What I know is that this oil ( "óleo de linhaça"), removes all kinds of petrol products traces.
Best regards here from Brazil!
Ever tried citrol degreaser? It gets tar off easily and for paint transfer removal goofoff is good
yes I love citrol! lol I couldn't find it locally on the day I did this so I did the best I could with what I had....
Citrol 266!
Yep! After that first attempt he did I would've reached right for the Citrol. Lol! Remembering to wash it off as soon as I finished that portion of course. 👍
Can you remove holograms with mineral spirits? I'd really appreciate it if someone could please help me. Thanks
Heavy duty degreaser spray it on leave it a couple minutes but don't let it dry hit it again you'll be amazed just make sure you wash it down really well but definitely does the job and fast I drive a truck that was covered some spots an inch thick now it looks new again
50% laquer thinner, 25% paint thjnner, 25% reducer in a spray bottle, it is effortless.
thanks to sweet project cars video on tarr removal.
a true game changer.
really? very interesting...
reducer? like plain water?
Reducer: called reducer you can get it from any auto parts store.
Thank me later!
Do what you gotta do to get the job done. I'm gonna keep this in the back of my mind for the future.
totally! I talked to scott from Dallas paint correction about this too. he said as long as you're doing no harm and doing what you need to do to take care of your family, you should be okay:) Apparently some guys use lacquer thinner for this kind of job and that's even more aggressive...
Have to have the patience of job hahah I been through this and failed took me hrs to remove maybe 20% of the tar I had on my truck.. just browsing through to see what works
I used Citrol that works as well
you cant put white spirits on plastics right?
Citrol or Goof Off would've probably worked quicker, but glad you got the tar off of the Denali!
Great video! what did charge for tar removal? Odorless mineral spirits have an odor?
yeah it has an odor-im glad I wore a respirator...I charged $200 and feel like she got a great deal!
So the can says "odorless mineral spirits " and it has an ODOR? Ughh!
So you dont have those Cotco/walmart towels laying around that are a dime a dozen, so you use ylur more expensive towels?
only when I am disorganized lol. I love the rag company "car wash towel" for interiors and utility work
Would a magic eraser work or would it be too harsh?
a magic eraser COULD work, but it's basically a very mild sandpaper. there's a decent chance you could leave something behind visually that would need polishing out. so I guess I wouldn't start there but use it at your own risk if you decide...
How did you get the rest of the tar off?
I went all the way with tar removal on clear coat. I talked with customer and said it would be $50/hr after and I didn't know how long it would take. she decided she was fine stopping at the original price so the other tar on plastics and wheel arches...is still there
Kerosene is the best to remove road tar. Very gentle for the clear coat
What's wrong with using petrol or diesel or kerosine? I use it almost all the time on my motorcycle and cars!
Yeah thats old school detailing
How did you remove the tar from the plastic?
Odorless mineral spirits. He said it about 100 times 😂
Actually he gave up, scroll up to see where he mentions giving up because client didn’t want to pay and he didn’t know how long it would take to remove from plastic (so he didn’t do it, and therefore he doesn’t know what would work best)
Use vaseline. It's a petroleum based product that will soften tar. I used it to get tar off my daughter's shoes once. Apply and let stand about 3 minutes then wipe it off. Multiple applications may be needed.
Got mini spot tar all around the car really small
I worked at a car wash and we used karocean gas to get it off. Then rewaxed the area
Awesome video and great job man. I know this may sound rude but drink some water next time man, you were smacking so loud🤣 but don’t let it take away from my compliment, great job!
Mineral spirits is just fine for clear coat.
Control 266 or stoners terminator brother. Takes a little bit of elbow grease and time but it will eventually come out. Hope that helps
totally. I bought some citrol today!!
Prepsol, wax and grease remover could've done the exact same thing. But has the same result as the mineral spirits. I just find Prepsol easier to find then Mineral spirits. Plastic chicken bone or whats known as a Chicken stick with prepsol to scrap off that build up and not damage the plastics/paint. Ezpz should''ve charged 60 dollars an hour.
I mean sanding would probably be messy but would work
Use Goo gone with a clay bar.
Did you wash the car before you started removing the tar? Just wondering
Yessir 🤙
how come the tarr was glue to the paint ?
Apparently, she had driven right over a FRESHLY PAVED road -- she said there were no workers to guide her around so next thing she knew...she was in the hot gooey tar and had to just keep driving. I think that made this tar situation a bit unique
Big orange citrus floor degreaser just melts the tar off. Doesn't Hurt the paint
Tar X is for tar, Iron X is for iron :)
I used the wd40 method and it worked surprisingly well but the tar was only on the car for two days.
Oh for sure the earlier you get to it the better
Why didnt u use kerosene oil
Ardex and simonez sells a product called tarzo works great!
where can I get it online?
Just add regular butter on tar. Grannys recepie💪🏼
Ohhh i didnt know..i have diesel , hope it works
Next time give Citrol 266 a try or Rapid Remover both are phenomenal.
I love both but didn't have them on this day so I did my best:)
Sounds like one has d-Limonene in it....
Couldn't you use a hair dryer or heat gun to warm the tar then use gas are goo gone
Turtle wax tar remover works great. Spray it and let it sit for a couple minutes and it wipes right off. Just my 2.5 cent
Plastic razor blades with a cleaner/ lubricant ???? Then a buff??? That’s what I would do on my regular cars I don’t know if this is not good for the paint but it worked for me on road paint removal
Sometimes I Get jobs I say I should send this person and their Neglected car home. I see moisture under carpets dirts all under plastic interior trim, man it’s crazy haha people think detail means “neglected car repair”
When your "Dry Me a River" turns into "Cry Me a River". Bye bye to those great waffles.
would it help to "heat" the tar and wipe it off?
What works the best is persistence. Even concentrated Dawn soap would work but you would be there for a while..I know this because I've done it to my own car which had more road tar than that. Took me a few days of persistence but I did it with really hot water
Boiling water and a sponge waterproof gloves to stop 3rd degree burns and it comes of very easy add some fairy liquid and its done 10 mins np...
Baby oil. Works like a charm.
Maybe try PPG Wax and Grease remover.
where can I get it?
@@HawkProDetailing You should be able to purchase it at any Auto Body Supply store.
Try charcoal lighter fluid. Use it my mercedes and not nearly as expensive as some of products mentioned
Never tried it
Try Emulex from Koch Chemie.
TarX works great!
Sindee Schmit even for jobs like this?
I wish I had it at the time. also tar from optimum is really good but I had run out!!!
this was a pretty tricky job. I later learned she has driven right over a FRESHLY PAVED road -- she said there were no workers to guide her around so next thing she knew...she was in the hot gooey tar and had to just keep driving. I think that made this tar situation a bit unique
@@MetalDetailer Yes I've had great results with this. It just melts it right off.
Sindee Schmit thanks for the response. Definitely getting me some.
Diesel works too!
Shout the spraycan. Works. Shout works on everything. The mineral sprits takes the clear coat off
Stoners Tarminator , super effective
haven't tried it...but definitely need to put it on the list
Optimum now makes a soy based tar remover. Everything they have come out with so far has been amazing and this should be no different.
I love optimum TAR but unfortunately...I had run out just in time for this job lol
