Today, let's talk about ascites. Ascites is a condition where someone's belly is protruded like a basketball. But it's not fat. It's mostly fluid. The liver is leaking certain fluid into a sack around the abdominal organs.
The most common cause of ascites is cirrhosis. Cirrhosis is a condition where the liver has scar tissue that's overwhelming the function of the liver. Now, the liver can't function properly and is leaking fluid into the gut.
Other potential causes of cirrhosis are:
    • Cancer
    • TB
    • Pancreatitis
    • Heart disease
    Associated symptoms:
    • Portal hypertension
    • Edema in the lower legs
    • Bruising
    • Gynecomastia
    • Vomiting blood
    • Confusion and cognitive dysfunction (potential remedies for this include: lactulose, sauerkraut, veggies, a moderate amount of protein, l-glutamine)
If I had ascites, I would start:
    • Intermittent fasting
    • Taking milk thistle
    • Taking vitamin E (tocotrienols)
    • Taking selenium
    • A low-carb diet

Ascites is horrible. My wife had this for the last couple years of her life. In the last 6 months the belly needed draining every 7-10 days, in the ER. We did everything the doctors told us to do & her health kept getting worse. Diabetes, liver cirrhosis, & colon cancer which took her from the liver transplant program. For 25 plus years she followed all the experts advice & each year it got worse & worse. She passed away 10 days after her 61st birthday & 30 days after our 39th anniversary. A year & a half ago & started to get the diabetic problems in my feet & freaked out. I began reading & watching everything I could to see if there was any hope or like my wife was I doomed. I discovered Dr Berg, Dr Berry, Dr Fung, Dr Mason & the list goes on. These wonderful Doctors have absolutely saved me from a terrible fate. I'm down 110 pounds & getting my health back better than it's been in 40 years. Thank you, thank you, thank you Dr Berg.

    Dr Berg!
    In January 2020
I stayed two months with, and cared for a friend who was in liver failure from autoimmune hepatitis (MELD 16).
She'd already undergone perisentesis x3 (total 27 liters). Once she was sent home I put her on a very low salt diet, as clean and anti inflammatory as I knew how (no additives, sugar, salt, preservatives, oil, fried foods, etc).
I also massaged her very swollen extremities twice a day towards her heart for about an hour each time using coconut oil. Rest and quiet in the serenity of her own home were also a big part of her care.
Every morning she got a celery, (apple or pineapple) with fresh organic turmeric root juice before breakfast.
Though all her doctors told her she'd need perisentesis for life, she has not had perisentesis since the middle of March 2020 and her MELD is normal!
The alopathic professionals (Stanford) still haggle with her during infrequent follow ups to begin an immunosuppressant medication used with kidney transplant patients! She never had a transplant and her liver is holding it's own now!!
We are "fearfully and wonderfully made"

There's only one cholesterol. If you're talking about LDL (which most people believe is/call bad cholesterol), it's not cholesterol, it CARRIES cholesterol in the blood like a bus. And the level is what it needs to be for the circumstances (the body is smart). If you lower inflammation and address other health issues, with the result of lower LDL, again the body is doing what it needs to for the circumstances. But the goal shouldn't be "lowering LDL". There's at least one study posted on NIH stating that LDL does NOT cause heart disease.

However, for the first two months I continued to have terrible ascites and was undergoing bi-monthly paracentisis procedures to drain the fluid. When I saw my liver specialist, she advised my this was primarily due to a low albumin level, and the secret to raising my albumin was taking protein shakes. I followed her advice, and I'm back working full time, am work out almost daily, am 6'2" 200 lbs with 9.4% body fat and a 32-inch waist with an 8-pack. I'm so blessed to have such a thoughtful care team, and if you haven't yet tried, focus on raising your albumin with regular daily or multiple times per day whey protein shakes.

At 57 I felt 25 again, my belly was gone and I was active again. A full physical in Sept 2022 showed great health and numbers (A1C 5.0) Liver enzyme's normal. In October, I started to get swelling in my feet & legs, and my belly was returning, even though I was still OMAD and eating well. It progressed until I went to the ER. Still normal liver tests. I insisted on a scan, and it found cirrhosis and ascites! I am still mentally processing this devastating news. I have had 5 liters drained, and need it again. Waiting for another Ultrasound and scope to see if I can recover. The Specialist says I am doing all the right things now, but I likely waited too long. This is definitely a silent killer! I am following Dr Berg's program and trying to stay positive but I am losing muscle tone and weight while the fluid accumulates in my abdomen. Hoping for another chance! I have ascites due to heart failure. After a myriad of tests my cardiologist believes it is because I had radiation treatment of my chest area 32 years ago. It is also because of very poor eating and being diabetic. CABG x4 11 years ago. Ejection fraction has floated between 30 and 40%. At first I was diagnosed as having liver cirrhosis (having ascites from heart failure accounts for around 5% of cases). I have tried keto many times but usually on last a month or so before I screw up and go back to bad eating.
In March of 2021 I started Keto, stuck to it and was able to take my weight from 280 down to 238 through diet over about 6 weeks. Most of this loss was from the ascites and water in the body. At a weight of 280 I was around 15 liters of ascites fluid in my abdomen. I actually ended up losing too much fluid too quickly. My kidney disease (from the heart failure and diabetes) prevented the removal of some waste products. My uric acid went up to 17. My doctor thought I should go to the ER to get checked out. Turned out I was dehydrated. Felt great on the outside. The did an abdominal ultra sound. No ascites fluid was present and no portal vein hypertension (what leads to ascites) was observed. Ended up staying in the hospital for 4 days while they got my blood work back to normal. Hospital food sucks! Definitely not fresh vegetables and healthy fats. Thought I would be okay to have some taco bell with the family upon discharge. Nope! Went right back to crappy eating. I literally put on 35lbs in 7 days.
I have done keto on and off again since then. Food addiction is real and it sucks. As of June 4th I have been doing keto for 10 days. My ascites makes me look like I have triplets. It is embarrassing and carry so much extra weight makes it hard to being physically active. Not to mention easily winded. I started at 273. As of this morning I am down to 245. I will add they removed 5L of fluid 3 days ago. They are going to take 5L this coming friday. And if there is any fluid left I will do the friday after that. They can only remove 5L at a time because I am allergic to something in the albumin injections they give you after removing a larger volume.
I have been dealing with this for last 6 years at least. I am tired and I am done! Also the longer I go not addressing my issues the more damage that is caused to my body, which means much shorter life span. Of course the doctors have mentioned heart and liver transplants. Not what I want to do. So through great teachers like Dr. Berg I am going to push through this time. I have to make a lifetime commitment to a ketogenic diet and exercise. Next week I will have enough fluid to get back into the gym and start some very light weight training. For those out there with this condition know that keto has helped me greatly when I stick to it.

You are NOT making up your symptoms. Have you have an ultra sound scan for your liver?
Get a better doctor. Sometimes they're just too lazy. I requested liver and heart scans for years.
I was told by my doctor .. "Oh, I don't really think that is necessary, " giving me a little smile. And I was too exhausted to go to another doctor - also thinking I would not be believed, etc.
Late last year I.finally ended up in the ER with congestive heart failure, stage 3 liver cirrhosis and an enlarged spleen.
Trying natural methods with some success - but it doesn't happen over night.
Take back your control. If your doctor is male - get a female. Just keep searching.
YOU ARE IMPORTANT. If it were your husband, or your doctor with these symptoms they would be desperately seeking help for themselves.

If BIG Farma can come up with a way to make FASTING profitable for them, THEN they will start ordering their sales representatives, aka doctors, to prescribe it. Until then, we, the people in the know, have to enjoy the fact that FASTING is still one of the best FREE medical treatments ever.

Sweat smelling like ammonia can also be attributed to an excess consumption of protein, FWIW.

@@dr.brinebasterd8982 excess protein can be converted into ammonia that gets retained in the body which is typically expelled through the urinary tract. That being said it can also get trapped for longer term in the body in ascitic fluid. I could link my sweat smelling like ammonia to both excess protein consumption AND ascites.

I have stage four cirrhosis of the liver. I get TAPPED twice a week (drained). I have a GI, liver specialist, hematologist etc. My ascites is ruining my life as a 23 year old- diagnosed at 19. I feel like my life was snatched away from me and It didn’t come drinking- I have autoimmune hepatitis. I’ve accepted ill probably die even though I don’t have an expectancy date. It sucks
