- Rochester Philharmonic musicians Erik Behr (principal oboe) and Anna Steltenpohl (oboe and English horn) give a mini-lesson on the similarities and differences between and oboe and English horn. The video concludes with a short duet!
- Hudba
Ah, the oboe. Played by tomatoes all over the world.
Except for Albrect Mayer who developed a technique for breathing in and out simultenaously.
so true
@@Naimbora circular breathing
Excuse you, I classify as the sub-class of oboe player “stop sign”.
I was wondering what you meant and now I've come to the part of the video where I understand it
1:14 "The oboe is traditionally seen as the leader of the woodwind section." (English Horn player sad face)
hahaha
Really?! I honestly didn't know that. Is it because you can hear them really well? Or is it because they're the instrument that you tune to? Why is it the leader? The only oboe player in my band btw.
Hannah the Musician they explained that t plays the tuning A so others hear it because the oboe is easily heard over say a flute.
As a oboe player I feel like the oboe is a under rated instrument because people hardly know it exists.
I assumed the rest of the orchestra tuned to the oboe because you can’t tune an oboe.
Wow, they made it an entire 48 seconds before telling us how hard it is to make reeds. World record!
I guess that's why they're so wicked expensive! They also only come one at a time, so if you mess up ONCE, it's about $20 down the drain. Although I have just seen an ad by Légère, who makes my clarinet reed, selling a plastic oboe reed at $190.36, so it's worth about ten wooden reeds.
What?! I would refuse to buy a Legere oboe reed if they cost that much. I don't even like Legere reed anyways.
Nice
@@RoseCadenza legere has improved significantly in the last few years, but i play sax so i can't speak on the quality of the double reeds
@@lil0of I play saxophone as well. I bought a couple of their reeds a few years ago, and I didn't really like them. I've never really liked playing with plastic reeds that much.
I love the oboe but the people playing it look like their heads are about to explode.
Bass clarinet player?😉
Quenya Sindarin looks more like a contrabass clarinet
Jackalsnipahz vonvonseven That's s bass clarinet
and thats how it feels lmao
Sugar that made me laugh
We used to always make fun of our oboe players face in high school, but he was a damn good player
Joshuah 😂
Did you call him Hobo just like they do to me
@@ishfoxergamer1415 you sound so hurt 😂
@@ishfoxergamer1415 wow I get that every time I take it out of my case at school
@@ishfoxergamer1415 my mom and dad call the intrument itself a hobo
I see a lot of comments about how red the oboist's face turns red. I think it's just this oboist style. It doesn't take a lot of air blown into the instrument to make a sound. The tube the reeds are strapped to is about the diameter of a knitting needle. So it's more like you're holding your breath when you play it.
Exactly
Famous anecdocte: At a rehearsal, Sir Thomas Beecham once asked the oboist to give an "A" so the orchestra could tune up. This particular oboist had a very wide vibrato. Beecham looked around at the orchestra and said, "Take your pick."
I didn't think anybody could get that red
Thesquirrel ofdeath do you even know how much of your breath it takes? I know this cause I'm a oboe player.
Ehomeyjr I have no idea my friend. I have never played an oboe in my life. By the expression on his face, it looks very hard.
I wish you luck in your playing.
Ehomeyjr when I play my oboe, my face gets so red and you can see my vanes popping out😫😫😫😫😫
Thesquirrel ofdeath It is relatively difficult but more than worth it, it's a beautiful instrument
jredpichay - that's good because we know you're trying!
the oboe should give the tuning A without vibrato though 😂😂😂
Yeah. That would screw everybody up. XD
Oboist had a bad reed and went full tomato
I saw the oboe guy go purple for a second I mean look at him he looks like the red hulk
I would have liked to know about difference in tone, range, typical roles they play in an orchestra. Showing that they have reeds and come apart isn't very interesting.
I can confess that for some inexplicable reason now I'm obsessed with these two instruments althought I still love saxophone since I was a child. I believe that the great classiness, sweetness and tenderness of oboe's sound is incomparable (because clarinet sounds good BUT) and English horn is the perfect complement for oboe so I love them too much together. I need to listen an English horn version of the Ennio Morricone's masterpiece "Gabriel's Oboe". Thanks for sharing and greetings from Spain!!! 🌸🌸🌸💐💐💐🌸🌸🌸
Lovely demonstration! Thank you - an excellent way to feature two beautiful instruments.
And a tomato
That's a great idea for bass trombone and tuba!
We both have to import cane from France where the good wine is lol
Best video yet, highlighting the differences between the Oboe and the English Horn. Thanks!
That duet is beautiful. Both players have such a beautiful sound, I strive to have just as clean and smooth a sound!
So glad I came upon this video! It was so enjoyable to listen to! Thank you!
I take apart and clean woodwind instruments at my job and its a good thing these instruments sounds so great because they are the biggest pain to work on xD
Beautiful playing!
Beautiful duet at the end.
Gorgeous!
Enlightening and entertaining!
One of my favorite instruments
Vielen vielen Dank für dieses Video. Sehr gut gemacht. Grüße aus Buenos Aires.
I play the oboe. I also think the english horn is AMAZING
I didn’t know someone could possibly get that red
Oh lord sounds good both of em'
Thank you :) I played oboe for several years but the frustration of getting/making reeds was enough to make me give up :(
I can imagine that making one is hard. How long did it take you to make one?
@@hankgillette it takes years to be able to actually make a good one (as in good tone, right pitch) but you can usually have one make noise if you practice for about a month. Also it takes about 3-5 days to actually make a reed
Ditto
I love playing the oboe I not that good like a professional but I always wanted to play the English horn
que bonito!!!!
Ah yes in France, where they have the good wine.
The name of the English horn actually comes from a mispronounciation in French. The French often pronounce Anglais like "anglé". There is an angle in the tube where the player blows. The instrument was not invented in England, but in Italy, like many classical instruments. Also, it is not technically a horn because it doesn't have a mouthpiece, but a wooden reed.
I’ve never heard of an English horn. I used to play violin but a wrist injury made it impossible to play now so I had to quit. I’ve been searching for my heart instrument for years now. I love woodwinds because they sound magical 😂
The oboe player move so much when playing and turn as red as a like a tomato or something
Que belleza gracias 🤩
thanks you the explanation
What piece are they playing and what are other tunes like this? I could listen to that for hours
Bassoonist: *breaks down door
Bassoonist: "SUP FUCKERS"
The English Horn is basically an F Alto Oboe.
Oboe in F
@@Kyubiwan Yeah it has an Alto Voice & is in the key of F.
2:03 - 2:15 Watch how he progressively gets redder
1:25 tfw you play the tuning A with vibrato
The oboe is much more physically difficult to play than the EH, which makes playing the latter a lot more fun.
Dude this guy makes oboe look hard
Does anyone know the name of the duet that was played in the video??
Any tips to build endurance, I make a good sound and about halfway through a piece my embouchure collapses
Good Wine from France and Oboe reeds,... brilliant. when is practice next ?
Tell leader of the woodwind section to the stuck up, snobby flutes and clarinets who think we shouldn't even play a solo, play a song, or breath the same air as them in the same measure at my school.
Are bass clarinets snobby cause in my band the trumpets are
If the EH is pitched a fifth lower than the oboe, would a composer have to notate the fingered notes a 5th higher to get the sounded not he/she wants? In a music program you have to write it the way you want it to sound. Would it have to be re-written for a concert score to compensate. Thanks.
I always wanted to know the difference bc they look almost the same to me
I wanna be the leader of my woodwind section. Only problem, my tuning A sounds like trash compared to yours haha. At my school, the first Flute leads the sectionals, when all the woodwinds are together.
I am trying to find this duet, it not the suite? Or the one called Father Son Duet?
His face got redder and redder
omw i do not remember this video or comment at all yet ive been here before woah
The oboe sounds like a Marigaux 901 as opposed to the now ubiquitous Loree heard in most American ensembles.
2:15 omg this man's face
Is Oboe D' Amore higher than English Horn? What key are they in?
I like the sound of deeper instruments like the English Horn. Maybe that's just me because I play tenor sax, and I think that tenor sax sounds better than alto sax. English Horn seems to have a much more beautiful sound the oboe. I would love to play the English Horn after alto sax.
You might really like the bassoon.
Can you blues on one?
What’s the name of that duet that Alec Wilder compose?
very nice video thank you. why does the english horn sound more sad though? I don't know what Im trying to say, but I think the engish horn sounds more serious...Like it grabs your attention like , "man this is serious," when a minor piece is played.
English Horn , sounds awesome to me.
I Love The English Horn Too
The duet was very pretty, but I think this video would have been more instructional if they had played excerpts separately so we could better hear the differences between the instruments.
I want to play the English Horn
Ahh nice to see there are other oboe geeks out there
Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra
Yeah the English Horn isn't really a Horn, it's an F Alto Oboe.
The English Horn is essentially an alto oboe and has, in fact, origins in France.
I guess French Horn was already taken. There is the old expression that the English Horn is not a horn and not English.
Why the different names? Clarinets and saxophones have various sizes, and they just call them a clarinet or saxophone with a modifier that tells what range they are in.
Both French Horn and English Horn actually have German origins
Du très beau hautbois
I play a recorder, but i can't get much tunes out of it :P
Doesn't matter. When i was young, i actually had a first go at the Piano at Shelby Church. It didn't sound very good though, cause i had no idea how to play it properly, XD. But, with CZcamsrs showing people how to play the Piano, i totally know how to play it now. I just don't because i never played it again. Also, I'd rather play a big ol' pipe organ.
And, let's face it folks, the oboe pitch is what it is, no slides to pull out, no help for it.
Do oboists often suffer from haemorrhagic stroke?
I’ve never turned red while playing my oboe. He is using too much upper wind from his lungs instead of bottom lung wind.
No offense, but the principal oboe of an accomplished orchestra probably knows how much wind to use.
@@emperorofgaming8146 Generally, for sure. But here it does seem he got way too excited :)
we have to get cane from france where they have the good wine
Hi
Wish I Could Play The English Horn
So is the English horn for oboe players who can't cut it? Just wondering.
JonFrumTheFirst it’s just a nice addition to a band, and if you have more than one oboe you might as well put them on English horn or bassoon it’ll make the band sound better than two out of tune oboes
It’s for people who don’t like the appearance of a tomato
Absolutely NOT! Not all symphonic music has an English horn part, So in a lot of symphony orchestras the second chair oboist doubles on English horn.
@@ChucksterJax The English Horn would require a different musical score, or do they transpose?
Ah yes. Cane from France where they have the good wine. A delicacy in my land
1:25 et 1:43 they re same I can't distinguish
I prefer the name Alto Oboe because it's an Alto Role.
His head got really red playing it because you can only blow through the reed
They need to put the mic away farther
Which wilder piece are you playing?
An ill wind that no one blows good.
his face looks a little too red 0_0
2:30 bruh.
They made this piece up bc I can’t find it anywhere 😭😭😤😤
Buddy said 🍅
I call it a "crook"
A bass oboe bruh that’s a thing what
Is it healthy to play on hoboe?
No. Hobos will often strike you if you try to play on them.
COR ANGLAIS
Wuu ur face is red 🌚
They need some reverb.
Please can we use the proper name ? Cor Anglais.
