- The right grip is essential in badminton to hit powerful shots from the backcourt but also to play precise shots at the net. Even a slightly wrong grip can have a tremendous impact on your racket skills but even your footwork so getting the grip right is essential.
In this video I go over the two biggest mistakes especially beginners make when they start out and then give 3 guidelines for a good basic grip.
0:00 Intro
0:37 Indexfinger
3:26 Always the same grip
5:35 3 Guidelines
8:42 Outro
If you are not familiar with the different grips I also made a detail video with the four most important and most used grips that will help you to play almost any basic shot: • Badminton Grip Tutoria... - Sport
Racket angle in the palm perfectly explained with the knuckle position 7:20, something which I’ve never seen in any videos or blogs so far. Very effective explanation, keep making such useful ones. Thank you!
Thank you 😊
OMG. That may be my favorite video yet. I saw a lot of myself in the amateurs and the disparity in playing really good players (as opposed to just watching you two play each other). You two are so genuinely good people. Great job.
This one was also a really helpful one!! As you said a lot of beginners keep their index finger up but you explain in a very good way👍🏻👍🏻
Great explanation, thanks for the guidelines!
7:00 thanks man! Seen a lot of videos telling me to have index finger above the thumb, but I lost a lot of control and power in my clear and smash. Makes more sense to put thumb at the top when hitting the shuttle, so thank you for clarifying this!
Well you gain more lever when you have index finger above thumb, I think I have seen only one Korean player holding racket like that while jump smashing. At some point 10% increase in smash power does not mean anything if your accuracy is 1 meter wide.
@@martincerven everybody are different man, it's still the V-grip so i think it's ok
This vidoe solves my problem that I can not figure out for a long time. Again, it's very helpful and useful, thank you!
Thanks for the tips! These are very helpful!
Thank you sir the first mistake was exactly what i was doing wrong!
Thank you so much for the sharing this video 🏸🏸🏸🏸🏸
out of all the practicians, im glad i like toby the best 💯
finally an answer for my long lasting doubts 🎓🎓
Finally with the advice of changing position between index top and thumb top on smash/clear (7:00), I can finnaly feel the movement without having my wrist hurts or being less efficient than in a panhandle grip !! Thank you so much for this vedeo, I was really strungling with that !
You are welcome =) Always happy to help!
thanks for the info. its a game changer
Sir, can you please suggest me some tips that how can I get my angles perfect?
And thank you for pointing out some common mistakes we do...👍🏻
Man 7:00, never thought of trying to swap the index and thumb when the shuttle is in contact with my racket. I feel like I can generate more power for my smashes in this position
Hi, Thanks a lot for the tips. I have a query, Is it correct to use the panhandle grip for the flat drives? Or we should use the forehand grip for that as well and why?
Nice video s and nice explanation good teaching
Thanks, really appreciate it
Thanks one of the best !
Wow tip 3 allowed me to finally understand how to to use finger power
Sir thanks for this helpful video
Thank you
Best explanation
Best video for Badminton Grip.
Thank you
super Video!! vielen Dank 🙏
Is it Arcsaber 11 + Aerobite (boost?)?
Btw, Thank you for pointing out our common mistakes. I think your suggestion about the grip especially third suggestion about where the knuckle of pinky finger should be, is very spot on. I am always struggling with which grip should I play in which situation.
Grüße aus Köln
Yes AS11 with Aerobite (the normal one). Thank you, I also find the advice with the knuckle super helpful to get a more relaxed and loose grip
Sir please make a video about jump smash step by step ... thanks a lot for great content about badminton
Tobias thanks as always for the video. I have one question in reference to finger order. I am not understanding how you go from index finger on top to thumb on top while making the swing. I think I would mess up the swing if I try to change the finger order while hitting. I hit all forehand shots with the index finger on top.
This is something that just happens by tightening the grip during impact and if you relax your grip after a smaah you will most likely not even realize that it happened. Only when you do sticksmashes I think it is quite easy to feel the difference
@@tobiaswadenka8435 Thanks again for the reply. I tried to practice this in slow motion and each time I would tighten my grip my index finger kept going on top of my thumb. The only way I could make the thumb be on top when tightening was to place my thumb at same level or higher than the index finger. Then when squeezing the index finger would naturally go below the thumb. Maybe I'm overthinking it but how much importance does this finger order have? I made a 20 second video of me gripping to show what I mean. czcams.com/video/fQ-RgrNMWhk/video.html
Great video, lots of useful advice. What about grip size? I always feel I need to add another grip on top to make it bigger, otherwise feels too thin and I lose control and get pain in my elbow - what is the best size to have and how to know if too thin or too big?
It depends on the size of your hand but I think tip #1 can help here. If you have trouble keeping the grip loose it is probably to thick. When your fingers are reaching too far around the grip so you already touch your hand again it is most likely too thin.
@@tobiaswadenka8435 i recently went from a g5 grip to a g6 grip and i could really feel i could use more finger power on all my shots. do you know a way i can change my g5 grip racket to a g6 size? im thinking of shaving off the wood a little bit since i tried changing grips but i could feel the wood too much if i use less grip on the g5
Beginners tend to do this is because they try to generate rotational power by pushing the index finger when hitting the shuttle. Not yet able to using forearm, shoulder or body rotation
very useful 👍👍☺
Thanks! Glad you like it 😊
Sir, Is it safe to put on 26lbs as tension for arcsaber11 ? Is it safe in the long run? Thanks
Smart one
Thanks for this video, now I know why my friend do not have so much Power.
Hi Sir
May I ask you a question?
Do the professional badminton players change their grips very often during their rallies(from backhand to forehand or forehand to backhand or to other grips?
Yes they change a lot during the ralley as many shots require different grips
Use of index finger is not for power , u can use it for quick return of service shots that floats above the net ( jus pushed ) . The index style will be quicker for that reaction.. and rotating the wrist or lower arm may hit the net if u lunge too near to the net ..
The raquect u hav is (3U r 4U)??
if you do forehand clear, does the thumb positioning still applies?
looking for the answer to this question too
hello tobi. can u tell me, what string & tension u use for your arcsaber11 please? tq.
I use Yonex Aerobite with 12,5kg main, 13kg cross
@@tobiaswadenka8435 thx tobi 👍 . i like the video when u hit dropshot, very controlable. i will try this string for my arc11. usually i use BG65Ti or bg80.
Hey, what racket, strings and grip do you use?
I use the Yonex ArcSaber11 with Aerobite String and a thin Over grip over the original grip
Thanks!

In Addition to this video I recommend that every badminton player learn about the anatomy of the hand, arm and shoulder muscles. This will help you guys a lot to understand and implement movements and techniques:)
Which racquet you have pls tell name
I use the Yonex ArcSaber11
@@tobiaswadenka8435 thanq so much for replying
Question, how do you correct beginners who are using the wrong grip (the one with the index finger) you explain the right way then 1 minute later they are back to the old grip...!!
Mayb one of the biggest questions and hardest tasks for a coach. The longer a player used that grip the harder it will be to fix it but there are a few things you can do or use. One is a gripfixer, that was invented in denmark a couple of years ago for exactly that reason. If you can wait a little longer I will make a review on it in one of the future videos
@@tobiaswadenka8435 Good morning, I DO have the Gripfixer, yet even so...haha. Guess we just need to keep trying....thanks.
Thanks. The thumb position at impact is huge information. It makes a lot of sense because to get more powerfull grup with more finger power. Surprisingly i've not noticed any coach pointing that out. Instead they point out that the index finger shout be on top. So i've been playing that way for years, even though i've notice thumb on top gives a better grip on impact. When i study videoes of pro players i do notice it now. Its very difficult view the fingers even in slow motion. But its evident in some of the smashes in this video czcams.com/video/hLwaHfjlojU/video.html
Good observation. I would agree with you. Though it is somewhat an uncomfortable grip if you are not used to it.
It's still the V-grip so i think it's ok man. I also think thumb over the index finger give more stability & power
The fore hand grip is so uncomfortable I feel like I have to twist or rotate my hand to have it go straight and not side ways
You mean the V-Grip?

I teach badminton kids. I see so many children doing this. It's so hard to watch with index finger on top
