- Ken Tanaka is back on the water! This time fly fishing in Belize at Tarpon Caye Lodge.
I had the pleasure of spending a week in Belize at Tarpon Caye Lodge and it was absolutely amazing! Best Permit fly fishing location in Belize and arguably the world. I wasn't even there during prime time and we had hundreds of shots and spotted couple hundred tails. We saw plenty of rolling Tarpon as well. Unfortunately we couldn't get either to take a fly but I had an awesome time and caught plenty Bonefish and other species of fish. Can't wait to go back!

I will be staying on a tiny island in Belize next February for a week and when I say tiny, i mean tiny the island is very small and I could only wade fish off the shore. What could I catch on the fly and what should I use.
Unfortunately without seeing this island and knowing what's there it's really hard to suggest something. Does it have a flat? Drop off? Reef?
Best thing is to maybe google map it if you can and see if you can check out a satellite image. When you get there I would walk around to see if you can locate some structure of some sort. For Belize you can't go wrong with small crab and shrimp patterns. For Tarpon you can use Gummies or something simple like a Cockroach. Can't go wrong with having some classics like a Deceiver and Clousers.
It all depends on what's there. If you have all that's mentioned above you should be ready for pretty much everything.

what is the prime month to go? did you have more shots in aug or where the permit just feeding better?
August is the prime for Permit. Although you will have tons of shots not matter when you go. I was more successful in August because of my guide.

5min. and you're on one of the best Permit flat? Guest have caught Permit off the dock of the lodge as well as Bonefish. Zero time restrictions. You can't beat it.
Unfortunately I couldn't recommend anything else because I only stay here.

I was mostly using the Cortland Guide "Liquid Crystal Series" also used Rio Products Big Nasty as well as a SA line. Not sure exactly which one though.
