  • On this video, I will show you an exclusive method in how to fix BOOTREC REBUILDBCD or FIXBOOT failure with this error message: “The System Cannot Find the Path Specified.” or "Bootrec RebuildBCD the Requested System Device Cannot be Found".
This message may appear if you are trying to fix boot loop or startup failure after cloning the disk or after a system failure in both GPT and MBR systems. But in MBR system, the error message is different as following:
“Element not Found when executing BOOTREC /REBUILDBCD, or Access denied when executing BOOTREC /FIXBOOT command.
Also if you are trying to rebuild BCD file using BCDBOOT C:\WINDOWS command, you will see this error message: “Failure When Attempting to Copy Boot Files.”
All of those errors indicate that the System or EFI partition is not configured properly or is not present at all.
When executing BCDEDIT command, you will see this error message: “The Boot Configuration Data Store Could Not be Opened.” Followed by: “The requested System Device Cannot be Found” instead of showing the Boot Configuration Data.

I fixed my PC using part of this method and a bootable windows installation USB instead of the files from this vid. (For GPT type HD)
TL;DR deleted system part then used windows installation tool to rebuild it and my original windows was restored with no loss.
I had done the first steps a few times in various attempts to fix without downloading the extra files so when it came time to do the whole process I accidentally skipped that part of assigning the SYSTEM volume a letter before doing the DEL PART OVERRIDE step. Then when I ran the VM file it didn't work and I was stuck again.
I then followed steps to restore the system part as follows:
    1) Create an installation media
    2) Boot PC with an installation media
    3) Press SHFIT + F10 on the first screen to bring up Command Prompt
    4) Run the following commands and click Enter each time at Command Prompt:
    diskpart
    list disk
select disk N (N refers to the disk which contains the deleted the EFI System partition)
    list partition
    create partition efi
    format quick fs=fat32
    list partition
list volume (find the volume letter which belongs to the installed Windows OS)
    exit (exit diskpart)
bcdboot M:\windows (M refers to the volume letter of installed Windows OS)
After this I restarted and got a different blue screen error, restarted again and windows did a little update by itself then loaded into windows and everything was restored! Even the excel sheet I had open when my PC died 2 weeks earlier was still open/recovered.

What is your blue screen error message and error code?
You can try to boot rom the windows 10 SSD, just to see if the issue is related to windows 11 if the computer booted successfully, or if it is related to hardware issue if the computer failed to boot.

Thanks. Save me tons of time.
However, I have encountered two error while using the mbr script, first one is there is some hidden character in the beginning of the file which makes the command failed. I manually copied the content to a new file solve this issue.
The second issue is the for loop at the beginning of the script, as my system has more than one disks that have the windows installed. One of the disk match the for loop and OSDrive variable has value. So the script won't go to the MainPath. I execute all commands manually to solve this issue.

In relation to script error, you can watch the new video if you still need it: czcams.com/video/oQcFjr6laeo/video.html
I relation to For Loop, it's used to search for specific files in all partitions, so the partition that contains that file, is identified as the OSDrive or whatever.

maybe a better question. 1. could I have put boot file and manager on both the system reserve and windows drive C and they are conflicting? 2. should both reserve and main drive be active? currently (see last comment below) my reserve I just recreated is empty amd looking to build boot in there. I have rebuilt it once via someone instructions but still got path not found that is when I did your two videos which deleted the reserve and as I said made new partition. been at it for a few weeks now.. thanks.

Still having an issue, and it seems the CMD Batch for MBR you provided just threw a ton of errors; "New steps NOT shown in video", something about "Windows Recovery needs a letter assigned before pressing a key to continue" and still got the "Requested system device could not be found" with the "bootrec /RebuildBCD" command that was done by the batch. I checked the link you provided but the steps are the same so I guess I'm completely ******. I Just need a way to completely rebuild the system partition (which is completely missing). After turning on the laptop, it doesn't even get to a Windows error, BIOS isn't seeing an OS which makes sense since the System Volume has vanished. Any help would be greatly appreciated, I could even Paypal you, I can't afford to lose all my programs.

    • @ValiumMediaTech
      @ValiumMediaTech  Před rokem

      You are welcome!
Selecting which one to rebuild the BCD on is your choice, however, you have to either keep both windows and create dual boot (so you have to select which windows to boot every time you start the computer), or exclude one windows from one drive by *DELETING* the Windows, Recovery and EFI partitions in the excluded disk and then create a new volume from deleted partitions.
If you decided to keep both windows, you have to delete the EFI partition that is located on the excluded drive (i.e. the drive that you have excluded its windows).

nice video but I cannot recover my gpt system. You give step-by-step instructions for mbr disk then blast through gpt in like 5 seconds! I cannot figure out wtf to do. I definately have windows on my e: disk and I can get to the efi partition. That partition has a boot folder a msi folder and microsoft folder both with their own boot folders. I am confused as fusk as to what I am supposed to do? Everytime I try bootrec /fixmbr or /fixboot or rebuild I get cannot find specified files. I have windows on two disks but can only boot off one of them. I am assuming I want to point the efi boot to the windows partition on the e: drive? That is the drive that is failing. Anyway it would be nice if you split this into TWO videos. One for MBR and one for GPT because the way they are in this I cannot sort out one procedure from the other!!!

Make sure you have selected the correct partition of windows.
Also make sure that you have file called "BCD-Template" inside windows partition on this path if the C is your windows partition:
      C:\Windows\System32\config
If your windows is on D partition, replace the C with the D as followings:
      D:\Windows\System32\config
Also you can execute this command to see o\if the file exist or not:
      NOTEPAD C:\Windows\System32\config\BCD-Template
If the file exist, it will be opened in the Notepad.
If the file not exist, an empty file of notepad will be opened with an error message asking you if you want to create the file because is not exist. Don't allow the note pad to create a new file with by selecting "No" in the dialogue message.
If the file not exist, that mean you are trying on the wrong partition or your system files are missing or corrupted.

Seems you are commenting on the wrong place, however, if you want to install windows 8.1 over windows 10, you will need to do a clean installation, by formatting the C partition, after that, install windows 8.1 as usuall installation.
This video may help you in how to do a clean installation:

My computer had issues when updating to windows 11, but I’m pretty sure it’s windows 10 right now.
At 7:50 I deleted the system. Copy and pasted the gpt files you provided where windows and user file is under (D:\) for me (although I see another windows and user file under (H:\) as well. Only did it for (D:\) so far.
So I changed the txt file to D, since that’s where the windows and user is. And ran your program as administrator. Then I got
Virtual Disk Service error: the specified shrink size is too big and will cause the volume to be smaller than the minimum volume size.
    Bootrec /fixmbr (completed successfully)
Bootsect /nt60 sys /force (target volumes will be updated with bootmgr compatible boot code.)
The system partition was not found: The requested system device cannot be found.
    D:\>bootrec /fixboot (element not found)
Bootrec /rebuildbcd (identified 2 Windows installations)
    1) D:\ Windows - 2) H:\ Windows
I push y for both then
    Element not found.
It all started with windows update and I got error code 0xc0000001. Been watching your videos for days but I’m running out of options and really don’t want to lose my files like anyone with this issue. I hope you can help somehow, thanks for your videos either way.

Seems your windows is on the H partition and not on the D partition. If that is true, you need to use MBR, because the H is located on an MBR disk as stated in your reply to your comment.
To confirm that the H is your windows partition, open USERS folder and look at the profile name (according to the folders names in the main menu of the USERS folder). The profile name is your name that appear in login screen when you are trying to login into desktop.
You may need to remove the V partition that was created when running GPT file as administrator (if exist), after that execute the MBR file the rebuild your BCD, but you need to confirm that the H is your Windows partition first.

Thank you for the quick reply. Just want to confirm after I show you this video.
      czcams.com/video/Cwk9qKGMWcQ/video.html
How do I see if v partition is there or not? I’m not too sure what to do after. Download the mbr and copy paste, and run as administrator on the H:/?

    • @StiffTheNinja
      @StiffTheNinja Před rokem

Update: the main issue I think is that the system partition is not being created with your commands.
When the shrink command is applied, it comes with “virtual disk service error…the specified shrink size is too big”
Been trying to look for guide to fix that in cmd but it’s looking like I’m reaching a dead end.
If you got any ideas for a fix, that’s awesome but it’s looking like this great journey is finally coming to an end.
Hope to never find myself around here again but good luck to everyone on the same journey.

Sorry for the late reply, but you already have a System partition which is the N that appears in the list of volumes.
But the strange thing is that you have two windows partitions with the same Username (Stiffy). Have you cloned the disk from the D to the H or from the H to the D?
The suggestion now is to do the followings:
1- Execute the following commands to see in which disk does the N Volume belong to:
      DISKPART
      SEL VOL 3
      LIST DISK
You will see an asterisk (*) before the disk that has the N partition to indicate that the disk is the selected one.
2- If the disk 0 is the selected one, then the D is your default windows partition, so you will need to use the GPT file to rebuild the BCD.
3- If the disk 1 is the selected one, then the H is your default windows partition and you have to use the MBR file to rebuild the BCD.
4- Before running either GPT or MBR files:
a- You have to permanently remove some files (using Shift + Delete keys from keyboard) from either the D or the H partition to allow at least 1 gigabytes free space on that partition.
b- Delete the N volume using these commands:
      SEL VOL 3
      DEL VOL OVERRIDE
c- But before deletion, make sure that the volume number 3 is the same volume that appear on your video (i.e. the size is 100 mb, and it has "System Reserved" label).
D- When you asked to type Yes or no to add the identified windows path to the BCD, type yes or Y only for the windows that you have identified on step number 2 or thee, and type No or N for the other disk. For example if you have identified that the N partition belong to the disk number 0, then you have to type Yes for the D partition and to type No for the H partition.

      @@ValiumMediaTech Hi! Thanks for replying.
The SSD is still connected and seems that it has no issues. I still have folders and apps that were from the SSD but I cannot open it since it shows "Error Location". I just don't know if there was no file loss. The SSD doesn't show up in the "My Computer" tab.
In Disk Management, it doesn't have a letter assigned to it, if I try to assign drive letter and path, it shows the error message "The operation failed because the disk management console is not up-to-date....".

I did this and I see my SSD(Disk0) in partition 3 out of 4 partitions as a Primary Type.
I followed your instructions and the last part where I assign a letter showed "there is no volume specified, please select a volume and try again"
In the Volume list, my ssd which has 475GB is not present, only the HDD and 2 other (below1GB) volumes. BTW, my volumes start at Volume 2, and then 3, 4. No 0 and 1 volumes. Just saying Incase this means something.

@@kenjohnmac4841 Maybe the SSD is disconnected or disabled from BIOS settings. If not, you may need to disconnect your HDD from motherboard and then boot With SSD only. If the PC booted, then you can rebuild the BCD and then boot into desktop, after that, shut down the PC and reconnect the HDD again.
