    My favorite feature of the Game Gear was that I could burn through $30 in batteries in a single day.
    My parents loved that.

      Mod your Game Gear with a better modern backlight screen and you'll get a big boast of battery life along with it. I had mine mod and it last around 10-12 hours of continuous gameplay rather than the usual 3-6 hours.

      Cameron Wasmund If you still had one now, you can had someone mod it for you. Remember the Game Gear never died, if the screen on your Game Gear ever look scrap, just had someone replace the capacitor and the screen you'll be right back at playing portable GG again.

    It’s funny that the game gear was so much more advanced than the game boy at the time. The Game Gear was my first gaming device. It’s also the reason why my first console was the Genesis. I was a Sega kid and not a Nintendo kid. This was all due to the Sega Game Gear! Man I wish I still had mine. I also wish Sega was still in their prime and still making game hardware. Imagine a re-release of a sega game gear!!! Am I the only person who was in love with this bad boy!!!?? Great Video! Thanks You!!

      I totally agree Travos. That game alone was the reason I desperately wanted a Game Gear as a kid. An uncle of mine had a GG while I had a Game Boy, and on a trip to Florida I had to jealousy watch him play it on the plane while I struggled to see my Tetris, and Alleyway games. He had the whole set up, the little metal stand, giant screen magnifier clipped over the front, the dildo battery pack etc, and the was always playing Sonic The Hedgehog, Marble Madness, Streets of Rage, I was mesmerized (Little did I know there was such a thing as a Turbo Express that BLEW the G.Gear away). The only thing I had on him was how fun Mario Land was which he even admitted, and my puzzle games Tetris, and Alleyway made his crappy Columns game look like poop. Anyway, the ONE time he let me use it on the trip (He was super anal about keeping the thing in mint condition with his Sega carrying bag and screen cloth, and I was a kid of 7 years...) I played Sonic 1, and I was genuinely floored at how well the game played, and how fun it was in comparison to the Sonic game on my Genesis back home. Nowadays both of my Game Gears have some clearly spent capacitors as the screens don't focus into view, despite one of them being totally mint...it sucks.

    • @VOAN
      @VOAN Před 7 lety +8

      They were released in PAL first though, it was just call that in Japan so to not alienate their audience. Naming them as sequels help the game sell in Japan.

      @TheMGMfan Před 7 lety +8

      +Voan Siam I'm aware of that, but Wikipedia literally said that it was a sequel, and keep in mind that it was in fact developed by a Japanese company (and the only reason why it was released in PAL regions first was because it was originally for the master system, which didn't even exist outside of said regions).

    • @TheMGMfan
      @TheMGMfan Před 7 lety

      +TheMGMfan I just did some research after posting that reply, and it turns out there apparently was no master system release, so it would only make sense to make it as Sonic and Tails 2 due to being a sequel to Sonic and Tails (Sonic Chaos here) and being developed by a Japanese company, like I said.

Triple Trouble was his very first appearance and you don't mention or even show him. He was also in Sonic Drift 2 which would have been another opportunity to mention him. This isn't a real complaint at all. Was just sad no mention of him. He's just one of those long forgotten characters that I have a strange fondness for. But for real, loved the video! :)

      It is worth noting that, on Sonic Adventure DX (the GameCube version only, as the GG games were removed on later ports), you do have to unlock all the games. Still, if you happen to have a GameCube (or one of the earlier backwards-compatible Wii models), and you don't mind playing through several challenges in a 3D Sonic title (albeit one of the best 3D Sonics out there), picking up this game is probably the cheapest option for acquiring the entire GameGear collection. With that said, I find it a real shame that this video never at least mentioned this compilation.

    Sonic Triple Trouble was my favorite. It had a great soundtrack as well. There were some slowdowns here and there, I think... but I never even thought about game development and optimization as a kid so I just thought these were normal.
    As for Sonic Labyrinth, it's a good game if you give it a chance. Some of the levels are pretty creative... although I hated the time limit and always trying to beat the clock. Controlling sonic while spin dashing is just a matter of trial and error and some controlled chaos. You press 1 or 2 at the right time so that you stop pretty close to where you were aiming at. The manual had some crackpot explanation for why Sonic's walk speed was so slow. Something about magnetized shoes, I think.

    Robotnik's mean bean machine is actually amazing on genesis because the multiplayer is sweet. Even the single player is just MP vs the CPU.
    The key is that the beans have gravity and the pieces separate; this allows complex combos (chain reactions) which bury opponent's in mire more and more dead beans.
    My late friend and I played a match once.where I cleared 80% of my.board as he was clearing maybe 85 to 90% and he ended up insta-killing me with a full screen of dead beans in one hit. It was epic.

      I think the reason why resolution is a problem in some Sonic games for Game Gear is because some of them (like Sonic 2) were also designed for the Master System.
      For example, Master System Sonic 1 has several improvements over Game Gear even though it's basically the same game.
      Sonic 2 for example uses the Master System Sonic 1 sprite instead of the Game Gear Sonic 1 noseless sprite, it also runs much better on the Master System and doesn't have the same resolution issue.
      However, I think there are only a few cases like this, other games like Sonic Blast are the reverse where they were developed designed only for Game Gear and ported to the Master System by other companies.

      Though sometimes copying/sampling does happen. It even happened way back in the medieval/renaissance periods, since it was harder to keep track of those sorts of things. Another big example of this is Andrew Lloyd Webber's Phantom motif, which is very clearly the big riff from Pink Floyd's "Echoes" (released 15 years prior). One could say such a descending scale is common enough, but what about the rhythm? The timing and emphasis of the notes? The dynamic? At some point, you're copying.

    In Sonic laberinth, the story is that Dr. Robotnic steals the shoes that Sonic wears to keep friction on the ground to run fast, and replaces them with shoes that remove his superspeed. Each "zone" is where he needs to collect the chaos emeralds and regain his super speed. That is why Sonic is slower on his feet than is spin dash. Sonic states that even though he couldn't run fast on his feet, he could still use his spin dash to move around at a reasonable speed.

Resolution is pixel density, like 480i, 1080p, 4k, etc. The actual issue was the screen real estate, because the game gear's screen is so tiny. This was also a problem in Sonic 1 on the GBA, but even worse! Dont mean to nitpick, but it bugged me that he said that several times
