Spring is finally here! I've got some exciting stuff coming soon (including volume 2 of the Blu-ray and a very big episode), so I hope you enjoy this fun video in the meantime. A huge thank you to LastPass for asking to sponsor this episode. I've been using their service since 2008 so I was very comfortable working with and endorsing them.
The first game we start off with in this episode is a baseball game? Didn't you do that in one of the Mario episodes.
Normogatari incoming...
@GamingHistorian Can u give me a shoutout, I'm well informed on video games an I wanna do an episode with u
@The SNES Man no, VHS
Thanks for continuing to make great and informative content! 👍
A Sega Channel episode would be incredible. Here's hoping it happens!
I agree! I remember having it for a while as a kid and I'd love to see a video on it.
@@skipatrolslayer I remember hearing about it. So find it really interesting. It was one of those playground things to me. I thought it could be made up because it was such a crazy idea at them time. An the idea of my parents paying for such a thing! Nonsense.
Yes
@@mazor13 I know what you mean. None of my other friends or anyone at school had it. I remember several times eitherstaying up lateor waking up early to see what new games they were offering. We only had it for a few months, but man what a great few months lol. It's how I was introduced to some of my favorite games on the system.
I remember wanting it as a kid, but my parents didn't want to get cable just for some games only I would play XD;
I remember as a kid when I spotted Chun Li eating noodles in the background in Final Fight 2 and I went bananas.
@BnaBreaker Since you were a kid I bet you started believing you could get Chun Li as a playable character.
@@lifeincolour09 Haha, yes I'm pretty sure I remember that rumor!
She's also a cameo in one of the Breath of Fire games and the newsreader in Mega Man 10 cosplays as her.
@@TheBlackSeraph *MegaMan 9
@@deadacclol5061 Oh yeah. I've only recently played 9 & 10 on MMLC2 so I get them mixed up.
"There's a poster of sonic in the bookshop. He looks uhh...well it's game gear. They did their best." Lol
Still better than the Gameboys shitty graphics
@@RumchugMusic at least you could see the graphics on a Game Boy. When I played the Game Gear the screen was overly blurry and awful. The Game Boy screen, while not backlit, was surprisingly clear.
@PXLTRON both systems were the same age and owned by the same person since they were new. It wasn't just the age. The Game Gear's screen really was bad, as some reviews from the time show.
@PXLTRON The Atari Lynx is older, was more powerful, had slightly better battery life, and had a better screen.
@@daemonspudguy what kinda shitty game gear you had 🤣 a well functional game gear has graphics on par with playstation hand held
It's true, Ayrton Senna was in fact considered one of the best drivers in the world. He was not only good at what he was doing, but he was also incredibly loved and admired by the Brazilian people. He was a very kind person, but unfortunately he died in a tragic car crash during one of his races, my mother even told me that she cried a lot on the day of his death. Thank you very much for mentioning him, it really means a lot. :)
Brazilian here. Everything you said is true , everyone here miss Ayrton , he was a good guy =/
As a fellow Brazilian, I second everything you said.
He died during the San Marino GP in 1994. That was probably the worst weekend in F1 history. Roland Ratzenberger died during qualifying. At the start of the race, there was a start line shunt that could have killed people. Ayrton died later in the race, bringing out the red flag. The race was restarted, which was disgusting. Later in the race, mechanics were hurt in the pit lane. Every F1 driver met at the Monaco GP to discuss safety. Senna was the Monaco master no doubt about it. Nigel Mansel said in an interview that he would give anything to have Senna back. He was his teamate
Senna is a legend. IMO, F1 racing kinda died with him.
long live Vettel
Sonic made an appearance in 1991 in the Sega arcade racing game Rad Mobile as an ornament (air freshener?) hanging from the mirror while you drive. This was actually a few months before the Genesis game launched. It received a port to Saturn (as Gale Racer) in 1994.
Scott Wozniak rad mobile also featured on the cinematic masterpiece, Encino Man. #WiezTheJuice
That is right. It was Sonic's first appearance in a video game.
But did the console versions have that sonic ornament I only played it in the arcade (and was trying to remember the games name)
@@gmcnewlook Yes. Sonic is bouncing around in the Saturn version. I own the game.
@@ScottWozniak This video was specifically about the Genesis/Mega Drive, though. At least, until he got to the "bonus" section that covered the Game Gear's library. He should have just included Sonic's cameos across ALL Sega hardware, that would have been a more interesting video and also wouldn't have left him feeling like he needed to scrape the bottom of the barrel just to have enough content to cross the "10 minutes of original content" threshold. I don't know the details, but relatively recently, CZcams added an incentive for creating videos with more than 10 minutes of originally produced content, at least that's what I gleam, my channel was demonetized long before this went into place. I'm not even sure WHY they gave me a partnership many years ago, I've never had many subs and my views typically don't reach 500 lol. But yeah, this episode would have benefited from opening up the restriction to encompass ALL Sega produced hardware. Counting Sonic cameo's after the demise of the Dreamcast would make it not fit in with the rest of this series, and also veer into the dreaded "not yet retro but not modern" territory that retro gaming channels seem to avoid with the diligence of a bureaucrat crafting the text for the paperwork required to keep his rival bureaucrat busy for the next four years. He uses the same typewriter he's had since he was a young bureaulad, aged 65, fresh out of Uni and the only thing that turns him on is hearing the click of a typewriter. Ah yes, what the fuck was I talking about? I forget, but that's ok, I am in a manic episode that isn't going to lead to full on psychosis, so I will enjoy this before the depression returns and cripples my commenting to "none at all" or "four words at most, once a day at best."
Cheers!
Xd.
"Secret genesis games"
....you could just call them cameo appearances.
English native can't English...
Not clickbaity enough lol
"Sonic's Secret Genesis Games" is a much better title.
You could also just enjoy the video and the hard work he put into making it.
Memox TV where is the clickbait at you piece of 💩
I was expecting Blue Sphere. That is a secret game that is actually a Sonic game.
I love all the work Norm does and this video was well made. The title is just a small thing I would change.
That is a combination of two sonic branded games.
We didn't really miss the 4 ground rules, did we?
What is Blue Sphere? Sounds interesting...is it available to own and play or was it only a production/fan made?
@@_PatrickO what is it? Never heard of it before.
@@petermcnallt12pm Just search "Blue Sphere Sonic" in google. It just involves using any other cartridge on top of the sonic and knuckles cart instead of sonic 2 or 3. The original sonic unlocks all the levels, most other carts only unlock one. It is just harder and harder versions of the blue sphere collection level.
"Don't mess around, or you'll get burned" why wasn't this used in a Sonic.exe fan game?
No
YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

when you dont completely deny it
Come on, Sonic going faster than
F1 cars in Ayrton Senna's Super Monaco GP2 is very cool. :)
Also, another Easter egg in the same game: you can play with the Hang on bike on the practice mode using a secret code.
It's especially cool when you remember Sonic was created by a guy who loved F1 racing.
I enjoyed Super Monaco as a kid, but it was one of the few games i just couldn't seem to beat.
I enjoy how he created the rules and then broke them more than once.
Daytona USA featured him in the first track, carved into the hill.
My only complaint is the title is sort of click bait. "Sonic's Secret Cameo Appearances" is more accurate.
Very true
Click bait titles for a quality channel such as this doesn't bother me so much. If it gets him a few more views and subs, so be it, he deserves it.
Click bait titles for CZcams trash on the other hand...
More like "obvious, not hidden at all cameos".
Clickbait title with filler content. Lousy video.
@@elgiacomo this is the first video ive seen of this guy. At 2:03 I've paused the video and am leaving no interest in returning

You know its a good day when a new gaming historian episode comes out! You are one of my favorite youtubers!
Big mood!
I agree my dude!
Was about to post similar. This sums it up nicely
I miss my Sega Channel! I had it in 1996-1997 and it was AMAZING! I remember waking up so happy when my brother said last night that there'd be new games on the Sega Channel tomorrow. It was like BlockBuster in our own home! I was 6, but I still remember being at Nana's house in Waco, Texas and my brother told me about a new Sega Channel game that has a new Sonic character who was red and named "Knuckles". I couldn't wait to get back home to play our new Sega Channel games! (Funny bonus fact: I asked him if I could play it on the computer at Nana's house). Nowadays, that's a reality. :)
My friend, you are the most underappreciated youtuber there is. As a long-time fan, I seriously thank you for all these years of entertainment.
Mike Matei, of Cinemassacre, cameo on the jumbotron at 6:19.
Holy shit lmao
Brown bricks

Gotta do that Sega Channel video. I vividly remember playing that thing at my friend's house...was finicky as hell, but even as a Nintendo fanboy, I thought it was an awesome idea.
Would love to see you do a video about the Sega Channel😁 Take your time if you got other stuff to cover, i can wait😉
How many more emojis can you cram into that post

Ive been wanting a Sega Channel episode for awhile. I still have the adapter, I wish it still worked.
Glad you included Ayrton Senna Super Monaco GP extremely underrated game
I definitely want to see a Final Fantasy episode! Great work Norman! Keep it up. I've been a fan for years.
Re: You saying a Sega Channel episode would be a good idea,
YES PLS?!
Needed an honorary mention of his first ever appearance, in arcade "Rad Mobile", predating Sonic 1 on MD/ Gen
Sonic's secret cameo in Tiny Toon Adventures for the NES. A very suspicious looking black hedgehog appears as an enemy, complete with spindash attack.
You mean that _black_ hedgehog?
That's not Sonic, it's a faker!
7:15 that soundtrack actually does sound so good.
In Outrun 2019, there's a billboard with a picture of Kilroi, the meme from WW II. For me, it's one of the best easter eggs ever
Another great video!
"Trash talk" from console rivals could make an interesting secrets video. For instance, Sega or Nintendo subtly throwing some shade at the other's mascot.
The Sonic reference in Donkey Kong Country 2 is a classic!
Sega's shade wasn't really that subtle to be honest.
Yeah, they were hilariously unsubtle at points, like the Mario and Luigi reference in Double Switch.
A episode about pokemon should be good
Thanks for this content
Mr Harvey is a gay person
As soon as that shinning force music came on, I was sent back about 25 years. :)
Should have called it cameos, not secrets.
Shining Force 2. Sonic doesn't actually appear like your rules state! 😂😂😂
... Still a cool cameo with the map shape.
Another great video overall.
Super Monaco GP 2 was the game I played the 2nd most when I was a kid (the 1st being Sonic 2) and I never noticed the Sonic cameo in it!
Suggestion: Secret Sonic appearances on Saturn/Dreamcast.
God, _Sports Talk Baseball,_ one of my favourites as a kid. The stilted commentary brings me back still, such a fun time. *Infield back! Infield in! Infield normal!*
A Pac-Man secret games episode would be fantastic.
namcokid47 yes!
He and a few ghosts appear in Mortal Kombat 1 as signs on a wall, not that crazy when you remember that Midway used to license out all sorts of arcade cabinets back in the day. (top right) i.imgur.com/YRGtDDN.jpg
Reminds me of IK+ on the Amiga...
If I recall correctly, the ghosts appeared in Wolfenstein 3D, can't remember which port.
would really like to see you tackle SNK/Neo Geo history
Great video as usual! You missed one - In Sega Bass Fishing for the Sega Dreamcast, if you do flawlessly in the tournament mode, the Sonic Lure is the final lure you earn in the game; It is literally a (very nice) 3d model of sonic scaled down to crankbait size with a treble hook and a crank bait lip on it. Also catches fish easier.
My favorite hidden Sonic cameo is in Bug! For Sega Saturn where you have to race him in a bonus round or in Christmas Nights where he can be unlocked as a playable character!
You should have mentioned his Rad Mobile cameo which was technically his very first video game appearance even before his very own game.
I'd hate to burst your bubble, but Rad Mobile NEVER made it to Genesis. I don't think that'll ever be mentioned.
I know that, but you realize he mentioned GameGear games yea?
I had Sega Channel as a kid, I'd be totally down for a video on it. It was an interesting service, played plenty of games I never even would have heard of otherwise.
This breaks rule number 3, but I liked that there is a reference to Sonic at the end of Toejam and Earl.
"Sonic's Secret Genesis Games"
You mean "Genesis Games with Blatant Sonic Cameos"
These two topics read differently.
Mostly Ghostly yes I think he is well aware of that and did it to bait more clicks.
This list missed the little blue hedgehog in Stage 2 of the Genesis version of "Hook" 😛. Underrated game btw
3:17 "presented by sonic"
Finally, a new Gaming Historian video I've been waiting for so long!!! I hope you can create contents on weekly basis. I love this channel very much because it reminds me of my wonderful childhood. Thank you Gaming Historian.
If you do a future video about Sega Channel, don't sleep on the game Pulseman! It was a Sega Channel exclusive in the US, made by Game Freak, and it's one of the best games on the Genesis.
A history of First Person Shooters would be cool
Well, it's April 1st. Where's Normogatari?
If you’re here, just go to 1:02...
Unless you really think the norm for CZcams videos should be superimposing an Advertisement BEFORE a video. And if you’re not on CZcams Red or Adblocker (use the browser if you’re on iOS/Android), then you might be stuck watching an Advertisement before the Advertisement before the video.
Who would’ve thought when we first saw sponsors pop up for a few seconds at the end of a video that they’d start putting ads before ads? Great job content creators, way to avoid unnecessary redundancy...
3:18 you missed where at the bottom it says “Presented by Sonic”
Oh my god I didn’t even notice that
He said sonic has to be seen not just his name
This is a reference to Sonic! Software Planning aka Camelot software planning. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Camelot_Software_Planning
Definitely do an episode on Sega Channel!
That just seems like a crazy concept to me and I've been wanting to know more about it since I first heard of it.
This! I would like to see it up by next week. Thanks.
Norm watch the Senna documentary! It's one of the best docs ever and you don't have to be an F1 fan to enjoy
I realize it was not on the Genesis but Guru Larry's video on Sonic's appearance in a game before Sonic even came out is pretty fascinating.

My brain: don't do it, don't you Dare-

i want to hear that smooth buttery voice talk about Sega channel and final fantasy :)
I'd *LOVE* to see a Sega Channel episode of Gaming Historian. Sega Channel has always fascinated me.
Fun Fact/Coincidence: Sega sponsored a Formula One race in 1993 (European GP), at Donnington Park, England. That race had Ayrton Senna as the winner. And it's very remembered as the best first lap ever.
I laughed when I saw the advertisement posters for the race, I thought it was photoshoped
You should do a video on all the cameos of Commander Keen's Dopefish!

I had Sega Channel for the entire lifespan of the service. My parents love it because they didn’t have to take me to the local game rental store.
Great episode! Did you know Sonic's first-ever appearance wasn't Sonic 1, but in Rad Mobile, a racing game produced by Sega's AM2 development group?
Idk, personally there's something about handing over literally all my usernames and passwords to some company that just doesn't sit right with me...think I'll pass on Last Pass, no offense to them!
Being a Final Fantasy fan, I'm on board with that.
There were shelves you could inspect in Phantasy Star IV in the town of Krup. Two of the titles were "A Day with Ecco" and "Run, Hedgehog, Run"
I love that you actually have the cartridges and not just a picture or title written
FINAL FANTASY episode would be amazing (maybe even just the SNES titles by themselves) since there are so many titles and those are the best two 😁
Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest, too…
Best surprise of my day
The honesty is refreshing when he admits the cameos are disappointing. Most presenters would try and hype it up like it was a privilege to see Sonic on a billboard in a sports game.
Thanks Norm for a great cameo in Aladdin Deck Enhancer (NES) - Angry Video Game Nerd Episode! Hoping for a Solid Colab someday! Keep it up!

Ayrton Senna is a hero for us brazilians. He gave a lot of the money he got from F1 tô charity, he helped a lot of poor people.
Well here's another Brazilian Gaming Historian fan! Also an Aryton Senna fan!
I think it would be really interesting to see a video on the progression of arcades in the 80s in the US.

It’s been 4 years Norm. Let’s get this series back up and running.
I have some great memories of the Sega Channel. Really look forward to a potential future episode on it!
Same here. I remember it started out with 50 games selection a month, then it switched to 50 games ever two weeks. I had more games on SNES then my Genesis, but I played more of the Genesis due to Sega Channel.
I had the Sega Channel as a teenager and I remember loving it for the first month we had it. That was what introduced me to at the time was a pretty amazing Vectorman game and the terrible Time Killers. However I felt like they didn't rotate enough different games every month just a couple of games per month would change.
Great video. Wasn't expecting it, but wanted it all the same. I'd like to see more on that Sega Channel you brought up.

Video Title: Sonic's Secret Games
Actual video: None of the games have anything to do with Sonic.
So his shoes dont count but a landmass generally in his shape is.... Okay
Agreed, he definitely broke his own rule with the Shining Force II cameo. All of those games that just show his image are really pushing it as well. I wouldn't have included those either. That may have made the video much, much shorter with only 2 or 3 games, but at least it would have been more accurate.
I think a Tetris Secret Games episode would be a good idea. I found one in the Ghostbusters games, If you look at the computer screen after selecting your character you can see the Tetris game.
Sonic's first appearance anywhere was a cameo - it was in the 1990 arcade game Rad Mobile. Also, while OutRunners was the 3rd arcade installment, there were other games before OutRunners on the Master System (Out Run Europa & Battle Out Run, and if you want to count it, Out Run 3D).
Tom N Jerry. No way. Never noticed. I have that game 20 plus years. 🤙
So apparently this year is Minecraft's ten year anniversary. I don't know about anyone else, but I'd love to see a video about the history of Minecraft in time for that.
Same game, same ten years olds playing it.
It's sort of interesting as it's never gone on sale price to my knowledge either, you would think they would have hit a market saturation point and reduced to price.
One little curiosity/story about Ayrton Senna's Super Monaco GP II. The game have this title and all of the Senna stuff because of Sega's Brazilian distributor Tec Toy. When Tec Toy learn about Super Monaco GP II, they pitched to Sega about making an Ayrton Senna game, and Sega accepted, mainly because Senna is a god in Japan, they love him much as we brazilians do, so was an easy pitch.
Then, the game was suposed to feature Senna's voice acting giving the player tips about every F1 track of the season and his personal tracks (which was included on the game), and Senna actually recorded those lines, which leads us to another Senna episode: The game included every track of 1991's F1 season, included the NEW Circuit of Catalunya.
Sega asked to Senna to record generic tips, with the circuit layout given, but Senna adamantly refused, stating that he would sound insincere and fake, so he goes to the weekend, qualified and raced, finishing in 5th place. Then, tired, but knowing about the circuit, he recored his lines, like a pro.
Unfortunally, due to cartridge limitations, those lines with Senna's tips about the races were cut from the final game, but the story kinda shows, the kind of professional Senna was.
Great vid. I think my all time most wanted video from you would be a history of Rares failed Stop n Swap feature.
