- Once a year, the world’s top alpine horn musicians gather high in the Swiss Alps to compete for a special honor. The Valais Drink Pure Festival in Nendaz, Switzerland, is an international meeting of alphorn players where the best of the best come to play the iconic elongated horn in its traditional Swiss setting. While 16-year-old Tim Lin might seem like an unlikely alphorn enthusiast, he is quite the prodigy. Born in Germany to a Chinese father and a Belarusian mother, Lin took home last year’s top prize in the youth category, and hopes to do it again this year.

How beautiful is it that they can play... with real clouds floating in the background? Its just so surreal
I work in an automotive shop... one day one of the guys was working with some PVC pipe on some line that needed fixing in the shop and he walked by with a 7 foot or so section with a 90 degree bend on the end and I said
"REEEE COOLAAAAA"
Nobody else thought it was funny but I laughed until I cried.
How do they transport the horns tho? It looks way too big to fit in a car
It's usually 3 parts (4 if the mouthpiece is separate, not quite sure sorry) that are being put together you can kinda see it at 0:34, it shows an alpine horn with little wooden intersections which are used to fit the parts together, they can be protruding pieces as seen at 0:34 or made so that the individual pieces cannot be distinguished from one another
you can see him carrying it in his gig bag at 0:39
A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one.
This actually strangely really interest me. The locations these instruments are played also really help.
