I'm Romanian, so not a native English speaker, and have never been to the UK. When I was in kindergarten and we'd sing "London Bridge Is Falling Down", I'd get really sad. I didn't want the bridge to fall, and no matter if we'd build it up with iron bars or needles and pins, nothing we'd do would work because it'd keep falling. It made very sad and worried for londoners. Didn't know back then that they had so many bridges. Made me worried for nothing. Damn londoners!

I worked round the corner from London Bridge in 1972 and 1973 and passed it every day - I watched as they removed and loaded each stone, carefully marked with numbers and letters, onto massive lorries to take away, probably to Tilbury, to be shipped abroad. I knew it had been sold as there was talk of it in Lloyd's (insurance) who would have covered this precious cargo, I presume.

Several years ago, myself and a group of colleagues walked along the Thames Path From Hampton Court to Erith. At the start we walked along the path and soon came to Kingston. As we were raising money for a charity associated with our company (a widely known Peri-Peri Chicken restaurant that rhymes with Mandos) i thought it might be a good idea to pay a visit to any restaurant on (or near) the route. Kingston restaurant was only a few minutes walk away so we decided to go and say hi. On the way we crossed the Hogsmill River over the Clattern Bridge. I did little research and discovered that the Clattern Bridge is purportedly the oldest bridge in London (built around 1175) and one of the oldest river crossings in the world.
It is a fine bridge, still going strong after many, many, many, many, many years.

For anyone who's wondering, the real reason we drive on the left is (probably) because most people are right handed, which means that a knight on a horse would carry their sword in their right hand, and would therefore want to approach an enemy right side to right side.
Jousting requires you to approach with your shield towards your opponent, which means approaching left side to left side. Jousting was much more popular in Continental Europe than Britain, which is possibly the reason for the difference.

    A fun aside:
New balance, the athletics company, collaborated with Concepts, a streetwear brand, to make a limited run of the 991.5 sneaker that references this whole story.
The shoes are a hybrid model; a combination of the 991 upper and the 1500’s midsole tooling. Hence the designation 991.5. This is in reference to the hybrid nature of the bridges original construction, being built upon over centuries. These two models are also exclusively made in the New Balance factory in the north of England and were exclusively for sale on concepts American based website, so a clever reference to something being made in England to be sent (permanently) to America.
The colourway of the sneakers also references the construction at Lake Havasu where the bridge stands today. The upper is comprised of a brilliant smooth turquoise pigskin suede paying homage to the similarly coloured water of the aforementioned lake. The midsole is largely white with a patch of tan/brown along with a gum outsole to represent the sand and earth of the same colour along the lakes shores.
The shoes are finished of with highly reflective branding on the medial and lateral sides along with the entire top portion of the tongue (which adds a watery shimmer in the sunlight) and gold ‘concepts’ branded lace dubré (referencing the states gold mining heritage)
The story telling goes even further as the shoes were double boxed with the outer box being a replica of the London Bridge stones transported to Arizona. The interior of the box and the paper wrapping the shoes are made up of newspaper stories surrounding the event in 1971.
All in all and excellent piece of product design and marketing telling a really interesting story. Now finding a pair…that’s a challenge in and of itself.

It would have been interesting if you had mentioned the affects the old bridge had on the tides. The starlings on the bottom restricted the river so much that there could be a two meter water level difference on one side of the bridge from the other, which made it extremely treacherous to pass under and also caused the river to freeze during harsh winters.
