ELI20 version: I answered why you want a large outlet area but not necessarily why it curves like that. Anytime you have a sudden change in cross-sectional area in the horn you will get waves reflecting back at the source. You don't want that because that is wasted energy that could have moved forward. Even if it goes from a small cross-section to a larger, if you do it suddenly you get those wasted waves. So you want the horn to basically be asymptotic at the exit so you never have a jump in discontinuity when it exits to the wide open air. So a directors cone isn't as good as the curved shapes I showed because it still has the sudden change when it dumps into the open air.

the material the horn is made of will change the sound too. it has to deal with vibration, sound waves and harmonics. idk the scales thou, sorry. i only could reference bells of brass, iron, steel, copper, nickel or gold even. i would assume it works the same with air horns.

My jaw dropped when it took 11 SECONDS for you guys to hear the horn. I had no idea the speed of sound could be so noticeable.
If there's ever a thunderstorm in your area, count the seconds between the lightning flash and the thunder. Both are created at exactly the same time, but because light travels at nearly 300,000 km/s, you can pretty much regard it as instant, while sound travels at 0.342 km/s - so each second's gap between lightning and thunder is approximately 1/3 km (or, alternatively, every three seconds gap is approximately 1 km).
At the camp I go to every summer there's a lake with a cannon on one side and the flag field on the other, they fire the cannon at a certain time during the flag raising everyday, and you see smoke come out and about 1.5 secs later you hear it

One of my neighbours friends bought an old diaphone (fog horn) from a decommissioned light house that apparently could be heard up to 20km out to sea.

Notice at 6:55 that the pitch of the horn is slightly deeper? I guess this is because the sound travels through air layers of different temperature and thus different pressure. Or is it just the wind causing somewhat like the Doppler effect?
Its because low frequency sound isn't as easily absorbed by the terrain on the way. The high frequency is loudest close and the pitch gets lower and lower as you move away and it gets absorbed. Might be a bit late tho but thats why

OK buddy, that's 1229km/h (765mp/h) which is exactly the speed of sound.
Air is thin water, not literally of coarse but gas is just a thinner version of liquid. Water and air behave fundamentally the same way.
You should go look at thunder when its storming outside, since we in the Netherlands have it alot we used to calculate the distance of the thunder to see if we needed to plug out our electronics!
Mark you should really revisit this experiment with different diaphragms and see how far you can get the sound to travel. (like with a 20hz diaphragm and lower). Hope that makes sense. :)
