I have the Easy Motion Rebel Lynx with the PWX (the one he says he is looking forward too) and its amazing. The bike is excellent, but the motor is the real star. I have ridden up hills so steep I would have to use my hands if I was walking. Gets amazing range too. In level 1 on flat pavement you can get over 80 miles. Even going offroad with lots of climbing and using the high power levels I still get 30+ miles.
Do you know when the bikes will be in stock. I am 6'1 225 but 30 inch inseam. I am sure they will have a size to fit
Haibike has a bike to fit...I am certain Yamaha will also. Dont hesitate...the Yamaha PW motor is the best thing ever for bad knees and to make you want to ride everyday. I assume the PW-X must even be better.
My 2023 giant stance E needs the controller changed where is that ussually located on bike? I have color display

Hi - Comparing with videos of the earlier PW motor it looks like Yamaha have moved from a steel output gear to MoS2 filled nylon to save weight. I have been in the plastics industry for years and I fear this material will not last as long. Also I have a PW bike and a PWX bike and by comparison the newer bike is noisier - Do you have any more information on this?. ..Cliff

I have taken a few moments of time to watch a few videos on your channel. Nice work! Great videos! You are definitely an absolute expert with regards to plastics engineering and fabrication.
As your expertise and knowledge has already provided you, composites (like nylon) afford a tremendous amount of durability with a low coefficient of friction and a very good resistance to abrasion. After several years of testing with multiple target metrics (including longevity testing), we are very confident in the design changes that we have made with the new PW-X gears. One might be able to imagine, but the use (and chemistry creation of composite for use) in gears is not new to our engineers at Yamaha and they have executed a composite material and design that is certain to fit the aggressive demands that we expect from our PW-X riders very well.
With regards to the noise difference between the PW and the PW-X. Yes, there is a decibel difference between the two motors. With higher torque demands in more aggressive climates and the need for faster ratchet engagement of the crankarm, the design requirements reveal themselves with a very slight increase in volume. If "absolute stealth" is what you are looking for on your ride, the PW-SE will be your weapon. Several changes to the SE have made it even more quiet and it works at a higher cadence than that found in the PW.

I also have a Haibike with the PW motor and the Giant PW-X is not slightly louder - it is about twice as loud when under high output on a steep hill. It sounds like the main noise is ex the gears, and I wonder if that is due to the plastic output gear. ..it would flex and resonate more than the PW metal gear.?...
I am interested to know what type of metal and hardness was used in the PW output gear?

Your compliments will get you everywhere, friend! (If the "good politician" statement was a compliment, that is ;)) Our engineers are not permitted to share information about what they have done to our motor options on behalf of our OE partners, so I cannot speak to the power settings that your bikes have been created to work under. However, I can share this: in the highest EXPW power assist level, as the torque increases from 70 Nm to 80 Nm and a 120 rpm support noise increases regardless of the material used for the gears. In response to you comments, I'm going to conduct a decimeter test for each this coming week so that I can confirm that the pre-product models that I have are supporting my claims. I'll post results next week.
Thanks YPAB. A decibel test will be interesting - remember the scale is logarithmic and not linear and so twice as loud as 40db may be about 50db - so the scale works in your favor!

You didn’t actually talk about the motor itself rather than that you just droned on about what bikes it’s fitted to and functions, I wanted to see inside the motor and to find out how to service it.

What's the longest mileage of PW-X so far? Any issues?
Total failure after 5000 km.
Used only when towing chariot with kids, almost 0 care done to the bike.

Yamaha Needs to make 1000w-2000w options
I have a cheap Electric Scooter motor probably runs $200 (didn't buy it myself.) Came with the Electric Mini Bike I got. 1000w 48V Motor.
I have an Auranthetic Charger early 70s bike. It uses a chain with sprocket on the rear wheel with the motor on the center of the bike.
Never forget that now that there are specific laws concerning eBikesand a large manufacturer is NOT gind to produce illegal eBikes. Also... the numbskull riding his 1000 watt hub powered down the bikepath at high speed is turning the general public against eBikes. Many non-electric bikers want them outlawed altogether. You can have a blast on as little as 250 watts if the bike really has the correct output curve and is quiet.
G Henrickson How about if I Want to register my electric Scooter to be able to go on the road? Just like any 50cc. What about Everyone who wants a strong motor to Use for Off road? You need to Broaden Your perspective.

I ride my 100 miles a week in eco mode. I have yet to need STD or High. The ECO+ on my Haibike seems...of no value tho...To each his or her own.
Does anyone know if I can simply connect another battery to the motor contacts instead of the Yamaha battery?
i want to use car batteries with a stepup module to 36V because i want to load the batteries while driving with solar panels in a trailer.
You cannot. There is hardware and software integrating the battery. You could do it with a off the shelf hub motor or a bafang bbs mid drive, but not with a yamaha.
@@gabriels1163 Thats a real shame, what a lack of modularity for an engine with such a bright future! I also look for a solution with the less drag with the motor off, for long journeys and solar-charged batteries in a trailer...
These bikes would be great if they had a throttle.
I have had throttle bikes up to 1000 watt...I like the "pedal assist" even better. I never thought I would, coming from a motorcycle background. These bikes ARE great...go ride one before you start thinking about another system.

Nylon gears not worth weight loss.
Looks like you're going on tour. I've also got a video on the Yamaha eBike standard equipment, the interbike announcement video, also Bosch vs Yamaha. I think Shimano has nylon gears, you can put comments there too

I think the gen 2 Bosch systems had metal gears.
Direct drive motors have no gears at all.
Gear replacement isn't a big deal, in my experience. We had a few customers with 10 thousand miles on their bikes who finally wore out the gears, and those bikes had cheaper no-name motors.
After 10,000+ miles on a bike, you will be a much happier person, and very pleasant to be around.
