- Welcome to The Fly Rides Electric Bike Academy. Learn how mid drive motors work and why the work so well from Hector's analysis. We'll cover big name brand mid drive motors, how they operate, torque sensors, cadence sensors, and all the internal gearing and belts that make these incredible motors operate smoothly and powerfully. The battle between mid drive motors and hub motors has been a heated discussion in the electric bike industry since electric bikes were invented. We at Fly Rides have all used both types, and have unilaterally decided that mid drive motors are almost always the way to go. They tend to be more reliable, less prone to overheating, and provide a better ride feel. Hector will go over how it all comes together in this video!

So, if you can't pedal (like me) or don't want to pedal, don't buy a mid-drive. Got it.
I just bought my first Cube eMTB Bosch Gen 4 Smart System. I haven't had it out yet, but I can't wait until this rain clears up! I know this is a "how they work" video, but how do they work? Haha, right? What I mean is, when on the bike, say pedaling under the speed limit, does it cut out, or does it continuously run up to that mph limit, or does it cut out and kick in randomly? I've only tested it on the bike stand just now while building it. When I turn the crank slowly, it's just a normal bike until you batter the crank down. Then it will spin the motor for a couple of seconds and cut back off. I carry on turning the crank as if I were strolling, pedaling, there's nothing from the motor until I pedal back a tiny bit and really give it some welly down on the crank. It's like a pressure sensor feels, but yeah, I probably sound stupid. I've never had one before, and I can't get out on it due to the weather here in the UK at the moment, so it's all "I wonder" thinking just now with it, if you know what I mean.
So mid-drive = no throttle? Not a good choice for someone looking to get around without pedaling.
Nice job! Clear explanation and appropriate video. How about something on belt drive vs chain?
I'd like to learn more about enviolo gears vs conventional derailleur gears. Riese & Muller are into them big time but not many others are that I can see. Did they not have big problems a few years ago?
Chains and cogs take a hammering and have a limited life, I'll stick with geared hubs.
Really enjoyed watching this vid
Good Morning. I purchased a Gazelle Ultimate C380 this past summer from Fly Rides. In August I had a scary battery fire on a different toy of mine... An electric surfboard. Now this has me thinking a lot about proper battery maintenance, charging, and storage. Can you point me to your battery video, or produce and in-depth video on this subject? Thank You
Good job 👍🏼
Top notch explanation sir.
