The 1984 James Hardie 1000 was the 25th running of the Bathurst 1000 touring car race. It was held on 30 September 1984 at the Mount Panorama Circuit just outside Bathurst in New South Wales, Australia and was Round 4 of the 1984 Australian Endurance Championship.
This race was celebrated as 'The Last of the Big Bangers', in reference to the Group C touring cars, which were competing at Bathurst for the last time.

I can't believe how long it's been since this era. It doesn't feel that far away. Racing was so much better then, with such diversity too. 👍🏻
Yes agree
Great start lol
Amen...
Larry Perkins was interviewed about his involvement. Peter Brock approached LP to be co-driver and LP said, yes, but on condition that he also ran the workshop and prepared the car his way. Peter would then be free to do the PR and be lead driver. The result was the typical LP quality race car that was bulletproof. LP also brought his own engine builder who was Holdens chief engineer at the engine plant. The motor they put in the VK was taken right to the edge of compliance with the rule book. It took a week to build. 530hp at 7200 rpm. Its final 304 iteration of which only 50 blocks were made, put out 590hp at 8500 rpm. Each engine cost $18k in 1980s money.
Larry Perkins was also the last driver to win Bathurst with a Holden V8. !995, I think. His was also the only Holden powered Commodore. The rest were running Chevrolet engines afaik.
Wonder what the Fury BlueBird was putting out to have beaten the Brock/Perkins Big Banger to pole :O
@@mozzaplaysgames7897 370hp at 5500rpm with 1.5 bar boost. It was a torque monster. My son built the engine after they blew up the factory delivered one. The Bluebird was a lot lighter than the Commodore.
@@TechnikMeister2 Yeah that makes a lot of sense. Really wish we got to see more of the BlueBirds in action but I guess it just wasn't viable at that point given the failures
530hp is a lot more stout than the claimed 400hp ish. When you say 50 blocks not sure what your referring too. Short run of Repco L34 style blocks maybe. 595hp 304, I'd question that at nearly 2hp per cubic inch? But I love the narrative!
Its brilliant hearing different types of engines and seeing different types of cars! RX7, Commodore, Falcon, Jags, BMW. Fantastic.
Back when the cars raced with the original door trim, complete with winder. Solid gold!
I cannot express enough how happy I am to have been around during this time which was the pinnacle of Australian Motorsport.... On the other hand it's also so sad to have had it and see it now as a shell of what it was... Great video bringing back great memories of time past...
The high point of touring car racing in Australia. Period.
What a great era and (at that time) a Great Country.
Fury's little 4cyd Nissan with the wick turned up was an absolute beast, gave the big v8 a scare there for a while.
Wow, the camera work from the in-car race-cam, and the direct comms to the driver, in 1984! Amazing stuff. Love everything about this
Always get goosebumps watching 05.
I was there in 84 , the last of the big bangers , love them
This was the best era of the Touring/Supercars👍💪👍👍
The range of cars , wont see that again .
Alex Frankl
Your wish is my command, you can see them again.
This group is racing and showcasing the classics. They race cars like: Dick Johnson’s Sierra RS 500 Cosworth
Holden Commodore (VL)
Holden Toranas
Ford falcon xd
Ford falcon xe
Ford escort
BMWs
Here is some footage of the cars at Bathurst

They race at places like bathurst, sandown, Sydney Motorsport Park, Philip island lakeside and more.
The next event is at sandown, I can’t remember the date but it’s going to be a ripper.
--------
They keep all the same rules from the original days, no standing start unfortunately... but still fun!

The most 2020(?) Bathurst raced Trans-Am vehicles like the Boss 302, AMX Javelin, classic Camero, and even some Non Trans-Am vehicles like the 64' GTO
@@dink3461 Where's the XB?
Yes, it's a joke and I'm sure you Aussies are tired of hearing about it lol!
The first Bathurst race I watched from start to finish 👍
Always loved the sound of the Falcons thumping up & back down the Mountain
Yeah it was so cool The falcons thumped and the Holdens were sweet and the Mazda wank wank
Those were the days, brocky, dick, larry, jim and cars we drove, bluebird, rx7, 6 series bmw, commodore and falcon, great racing to!
I have this entire race on VHS with ads haha
Sincerely Man you're got everything,i'm envious ;
That’s cool
time to convert it mate you will lose quality
When the technology was better than now.
I wonder if today's drivers would be able to handle the old bangers of yesterday as good as Brock / Johnson / Grice / Moffat etc... Be interesting comparison..
Wow, Camaros, BMWs, RX7s, this is legendary.
When racing was dangerous and sex was safe
Love that sound of the RX7 on the starting grid 1:20
Look at that 635! 😍
Best part of any of the 70/80s Bathurst was listening to Johnson whinge about anyone and everything.
‘Oh my goodness’.
Gotta love the commentary !!
Win on Sunday sell on Monday greatest era of racing still remember when the 1977 1-2 of Moffat my olman went out and brought a XC Cobra
Rip Brocky 👍👍
i love the cheers after the door slam
I’ve still got this somewhere on VHS tape!
First race I remember was Oran Park 1985 with the Mobil VKs I would have been 5 but the memories are crystal clear of this era
Yep. The last of the big bangers as they called it. George Fury's bluebird had a sweet sound to it. I often wondered what that car was like.
Good to see the rx7 driver acknowledge the crowd after slamming his door lol
Wow!!!! So close
Always drama in the early stages of this race. Its got everything. Drama, tension, hero moments, disaster moments, the checkered flag moment
I wish I was alive to be there! Born in 96 I've missed out on the good times it seems
Yep. Best time to be born in Australia was the 60s. Bit of the old world and the new
Mike Raymond would have wanted you to be there too!
Stop crying! You sound like some 70 year old. "Oh, back in the 70's when I was 20, the life was so much better." The technology will be better in the future. Back in 1984 you had a bigger chance to die than you have in 2023.
@@psychedelicprawncrumpets9479 Consider that. Born in 1960, people are 63 now lol. I wish to be younger, not older.
Yeh. Too late for that Party.
Imagine a Group C VL Walkinshaw Commodore..
The days when we took
Road Cars,
& turned them into
RACE Cars !
We need these numbers back at Bathurst - GT3 and GT4 anybody?
Not a millennium, gen y or zoomer in site... happy dayz
Sad to see Grice/Harrington out at 7:20 - does anyone know what happened? An incident with the RX-7 or oil on the track or..?
Yes mate, Gregg Hansford in Moffat’s RX7 rear ended him coming onto Mountain Straight. He was right on the back of him under under brakes and was on the power very early. Basically drove straight into the back of him and buried the front bumper into the diff housing of Grice’s car. Lifted the rear end right off the ground (mid corner). Was a seriously hard hit, and Harrington went backwards into the wall. Not his fault.
Ch7 cameras never picked it up but it happened right in front of me on the day.
@@BigBadOzBoyMark Wow, how sad. Really appreciate the insight, thanks! Such a great era of Australian racing - you were fortunate to be there. Thanks for the insight!
The glory days with an awesome varied field and characters driving them. The current supercar racing is as boring as bat you know what!
I wonder what speed the vk did down conrod back then
Quickest down Conrod was the Wang Jaguar at 274kmh. Harves 272kmh in VK Holden, Johnson 271.....and Moffat Mazda with 259.
another good year of colour schemes on these cars which kicks arse on the modern day race car big thanks to the tobacco companies with $$$$$ falling out of their arses and in my opinion tobacco advertising had no effect on young people because i still see teenagers lighting up as they walk out of the school gates and its been 25 plus years since the ban
The tobacco and liquor sponsorhip and glamourous women era was the greatest. Todays sanitized and pussy foot racing is boring as bat shit, but then again its a reflection of society really
Well said
Prince Leopold? lol. Looked him up and a I see had some chops. Probably all that loot didn’t hurt in helping him get those chops.
Fury had a blinding start, got well in front of brock for 1st corner.
If that stupid jaguar hadn't stalled then this would have been a bluebird win.
LMFAO surely you are taking the piss yeah? Listen I can appreciate your brand loyalty and fanboyism for Nissan mate, however if you actually knew anything at all about the Bathurst 1000 or indeed that particular race car, you would know how comically delusional it is for someone to predict a CERTAIN race victory on Lap 1 of a marathon 163 lap race. Therefore I must assume that you my friend are a few bulls short of the top paddock or a comical genius.
FYI the Fury Nissan finished the race in 16th place out of the 29 cars that made it to the checkered flag, and coincidentally was the one and only Nissan that actually finished that year's race 😉
Racing was awesome in this era, you could tell what car companies were in it. Not like these days where all are almost the same body wish shell fitted to try and make look like real cars. Avagud1
What a specatcle that was..
How's the 'brarp" from the Rotary on the grid?!
I have tinnitus from all the Rotary's getting around in the 70s/80s
Wankel Rotary......(schoolboy snigger ...... 😛)
Yeah considering how far back they qualified that year you could hear him revving the thing to the moon to get the very best start possible, must of worked whatever he did cos the mighty little 12a PP RX7 would shock almost every single person in attendance that day, the clear majority all V8 loyalists the highly unfancied little 12a Rotary RX7 stunned the rowdy Holden Ford crowd by finishing only 3.9 seconds behind the race winner in 3rd place after 163 laps of a long day's racing 😎👍
That hdt vk looks so fucking tough
It sucks now cause the cars today are to perfect so their just very boring no crashes or slides boring
Fury didn't steal this name 👀
chaos
How did a middle aged white guy from the 80's end up with a name like Wang?? Must be KING of _something_
Brand of photocopiers like Xerox etc.
Those 13bs tho
Nobody likes a smart arse in the comments but because your a fellow Rotorhead I'll go easy on ya 😁 the truly magnificent RX7s of that era had to run the same engines (race prepped) they came with from the local Mazda Dealer. They were all race prepped naturally aspirated 12a engines (peripheral ported) 259kph down conrod, finished in 3rd place 3.9 seconds from the race winner after 163 laps. Stunning the majority V8 crowd of V8 loyalists in attendance that day, they still got booed on the podium tho, as per Aussie Bogan tradition for anything not Holden/Ford 😆
No wonder all the other cars crashed into Walkinshaw’s car, he had “WANG” Computers written all over it.
Gary Masterson crashed, gee what a shame ....not , He was a most obnoxious character, to deal with.
Australians know how to make a great car ...shame
Oh boy I miss this commentary...NOT.
Diversity....new word for the cars were shit.....
Dunno if you're taking the piss or a clueless GenZ? The cars from that era of Australian motoring were technically flawed by today's flock of modern snooze fest computers on wheels, the cars back then had character, ALL OF THEM, each one with their own addictive personalities and driving pleasure. They were raw and visceral driving machines excitement dialled up to 11, it's something today's youth will never get to experience or understand what they were missing. Today's cars maybe faster, safer modern marvels but boring by comparison, no soul no character just perfect. They spoil the driver and as such are less satisfying to drive. It's hard to explain to younger guys in words, but I always say if you ever get the chance to go in or drive an older car, anything pre 1998, don't miss the opportunity trust me
Today's so called "Supercars" are rubbish racing compared to this! Bathurst today is a big bore in comparison!
