    ABOUT KIM'S CONVENIENCE:
"Kim's Convenience" depicts a Korean Canadian Kim family that runs a convenience store in the Moss Park neighbourhood of Toronto: parents "Appa" (Paul Sun-Hyung Lee) and "Umma" (Jean Yoon) - Korean for dad and mom, respectively - along with their daughter Janet (Andrea Bang) and estranged son Jung (Simu Liu). Other characters include Jung's friend and coworker Kimchee (Andrew Phung) and his manager Shannon (Nicole Power). The series is based on Ins Choi's 2011 play of the same name. Mr. and Mrs. Kim have worked hard to give their now-twenty-something children, Janet and Jung, a better life in Canada. This comedy finds laughter in the trials of running a literal 'Mom and Pop' shop while raising kids in a culture not quite your own.

As a white dude who moved to Toronto alone at 18 this show was so important to me. I'm older now and I've left the city but the decade I spent there can be summed up with this show. It wasn't just a show about Koreans or representation. For me it represented a community I was a part of during my fundamental years. I hope this show doesn't get lost to time as "That Korean show".

I just watched the final episode of Kim's Convenience and I just felt so heartbroken. I've been binge-watching this during my self-isolation because I have Covid. They truly cherished every single days of me being lonely and stressed during the self-isolation, the show ended more like losing your own family. I do really wish that someday all the casts would reunite and make another season of this. Thankyou Appa, Umma, Janet, Jung, and all the other casts for helping me through the self-isolation. I will truly miss this show.

PS...... I'm from South Africa. We had a few of these shops in our neighborhood growing up. I remember Mr Chong and ,his wife fondly still and that was in the 1980's. Their daughter would help out from time to time at the shop as well😊❤🫠

The Korean aspects of the show are definitely (and deservedly) highlighted. But one thing that consistently gets overlooked is the sharp comedy writing and the richness of the neurotic B-list characters like Pastor Nina, Enrique, Gerald and Terence. Each one of them could carry sitcoms of their own!

Well if Ins, Jean, and Paul Sunghyun aren't in it, it wouldn't really be possible to make an Asian/Korean spin-off show anymore. Simu's tweets make it look like he argued for a bigger role and that caused drama with other people in the production. It's understandable that he wanted to have his character grow as a human and all that but the show had so many good characters (especially the family) and focusing too much on one of them would have ruined the show. It sounds like it wasn't the networks choice to cancel the show but the writers walked out after the conflict about the shows direction. I guess they felt it couldn't go on like that.
I'd rather have Shannon get her own show than have a non-Korean writer/director take on a show primarily about Koreans. TBH, I'd also argue that Kim's Convinience was more than a show about Koreans. It was a show about Canada/Toronto and the amount of diversity that needs representation. The Mehtas, Mr. Chin, Mrs. Ada, Pastor Nina, Enrique, and other characters showed a form of diversity and inclusiveness.

@@sphong0610 that's big, if true. That makes me really sad; I feel like we definitely needed one more season to tie everything up.
I would agree with the rest of your comment. I love this show and I think the enjoyment comes from visiting Canada and Korea, having a lot of immigrant friends, and my improv training which makes me enjoy character driven shows. This is a chef's kiss of content. You have to watch it twice to unpack everything and then a third time after researching to get all the language jokes.

The show was amazing and had great characters, but portraying them with more depth and authenticity wouldn’t have ruined the show. Neither of us were in the room when this conflict with the writers happened, but I don’t understand why the white writers and producers blocked out Jean and Simu for offering plot lines that followed their lived experiences as Korean Canadians. Thanks the ekip for all of your qualities, even the show cannot make to ss6, as an audience I understand sometimes it's better stopping right here than making an unworthy end.

I LOVE THIS SHOW. LITERALLY ADORE THIS FAMILY AND SITCOM. I’m so sad that it has ended 🥲 I am not Korean but I’m Asian, and I can relate to what goes on in the Kim’s family. I just wish they made another season. 💕

As a white canadian, KC has a warm hearted appeal - right from the "sha na, na na na na" intro, to the moment when Jung and Shannon finally ,albeit akwardly, embraced.
I love KC, despite stereotyping whites as "privelged,racist,misognist,etc....despite!

Simu Liu was causing drama that he wanted to decide character arcs and plotlines. Ins Choi said the show 'died from within' due to infighting, egos and conflict. Both creators walked away. Simu and others were trying to hijack the creative process.

@@sunnysied713 Yeah reading his tweets, it looks like he wanted Jung to take a even larger role in the show like focusing on his growth and eventual success + reunion with Appa, which is understandable but not always easy with a show that has so many good characters. In a way, he wanted to write Jung as the "main character" instead of one of the family. But these are just my thoughts based on his tweets and interviews, what are your sources about the infighting?

Take an award winning, successful show about a Korean Canadian family and cancel it so you can make a spinoff about the non Korean character. SMART...
Probably won't be watching Shannon's spinoff... But... if ya'll did a show about Terence... Honestly, I would probably watch his spinoff over Shannon's...
Still messed up what ya'll did though.

    • @legendlore9241
      @legendlore9241 Před 3 lety +1

Eh. I'll watch the Shannon spinoff because I love Shannon, but what they did really is a shame. I read somewhere that it was Simu Liu who was fighting with the writers due to lack of representation in the writers' room. Whatever the situation, everyone could've resolved the problem without cancellation. :/
