We call him the King for a reason. He hated to be called the King, he said there is only one King and he’s in heaven.
Truly from his soul. He believed in rights for all. He is responsible for the sociocultural development of black and white music being accepted as a true sound that could not be excluded by the other. He was gone way too soon. 😢
Being born in 1960 I say the music was magical back those days, the air smelled sweeter, grass greener, skyes bluer and the world seemed so much kinder.
For me, this is the best song and performance of all time. The message is so important and powerful that I couldn't listen to this without crying for the first 100x I watched this. He gave his heart and soul for this performance further solidifying his King and greatest of all time titles.
Elvis can sing like no other ever will. The voice, power, passion, emotion, control, charisma, he put his heart and soul in to every word. When Elvis sang you could not only hear him you could feel him. Elvis loved music but most of all he loved his fans, No auto tune no pitch correction just pure perfection. Long live the King the GREATEST ENTERTAINER THIS WORLD WILL EVER SEE!!!!!

Inspired by Martin Luther King's, "I have a Dream" speech. This was written in the wake of the assassination of Bobby Kennedy & MLK just a few months earlier. Thus the emotion that Elvis puts in is really heartfelt. Awesome. This is a true classic that has lasted the test of time.
This is music. No beats, no bars, no computer production, no auto tune, no dancers, no light show, no skanks, no twerking, just awesome talents, musicians playing actual instruments and a miraculous singing voice.
I really appreciate your reaction to Elvis' song. There is a reason he is called "the King." He was a first-class entertainer on stage. I grew up at the same time with Elvis. You cannot imagine the amount of adulation he received. Thousands still come to Graceland in August to celebrate Elvis. Enjoy!
the more you watch Elvis you will realise he was the GOAT. No doubts even is you didnt like all his music the greatest voice ever. Elvis was a one off full of talent looks and charisma. His music will last centuries, if he was beamed down today he would be just as popular now which speaks volumes for his music. Many younger people now are experiencing Elvis for the first time, he was light years ahead of artists then and now and probably in the future. Go down the rabbit hole.

No auto tuning. This man had raw talent & with each decade, his voice matured & just got better & better, right up until his death at age 42 in 1977 …. Even when he did what turned out to be his final concert, he was a very sick man by then, he belted out those songs & his voice was just incredible, just 8 weeks before he died. This song was Elvis’ tribute to Martin Luther King, after his senseless assassination. Great Reaction. Every song that Elvis ever sang, he sang with passion & emotion. A very great man indeed.

E. Brown wrote this song for Elvis, who was working on his comeback after many years of doing just musicals. Dr M.L.King and Robert F Kennedy were killed weeks before an Elvis was really devastated. He loved this song right away and they decided to end the 1968 comeback special with this amazing piece.

His manager was against this song because it had a sociopolitical message which Elvis wasn`t supposed to get involved in. But Elvis was committed. It was the same with "In The Ghetto". With the exception of Elvis fans, people never knew how deep this man was. All the silly Elvis impersonators brought a lot of harm to his persona.
Elvis was so much more than just The King Of Rock.
He invented so many new things, it`s not even funny.
Elvis fans love nothing more than spreading Elvis love through his music. We love to watch new generations of younger people discover the magic of Elvis' music. I'd recommend "Walk A Mile In My Shoes" from 1970 in Las Vegas, about 2 years after this performance.

Recommend doing some research on Elvis. He truly was the greatest. Elvis changed culture and to understand the impact he had, you have to learn about how it all happened and his background. In my opinion, he was the greatest singer and vocalist up to today. Remember, nothing fake, no digital anything. Just his voice and the instruments. John Lennon said, “Without Elvis, there would be no Beatles.”

Some info on this song: Producer/director Steve Binder, Elvis, producer Billy Goldenberg, songwriter Earl Brown & some others were in Binder's office talking about getting the '68 special together when they heard a commotion coming from the TV room, they ran in to see what turned out to be the live assassination of Robert Kennedy; they went back to Binder’s office & sat up until 3 or 4 in the morning to discuss the assassinations (MLK & both Kennedys, Vietnam), & Binder asked Brown to write a song that expressed how Elvis felt about the world situation. And out of that came If I Can Dream. The red tie was for the blood spilled in Vietnam (as told by Binder in one of his many video interviews & discussions about the creation of '68). Thank you.

You can imagine how powerful this came across in 1968 after MLK was killed and Robert Kennedy was killed! Tensions were at an all time high between the races. This was a Christmas special /comeback and Elvis ended the show with this song! He was a big supporter of MLK and the Kennedy's... their deaths hit him hard.

New subscriber and I'm so glad you got to experience this. It's one of the great performances of that era I think, and it was a risky thing to do at the time. He did it against strong advice not to do it from his asshole manager "Colonel" Tom Parker, and also the producers.
It was written specifically for Elvis by one of his songwriters when he refused to do Here Comes Santa Claus for the finale of that 1968 Comeback Special like they wanted him to do. He wanted to do something meaningful instead. So this song was written in response to the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King not long before, and also it happened not far from where Elvis lived in Memphis.
It was also partly inspired by the recent assassination of Bobby Kennedy and the lives lost in the Vietnam War and all of the racial strife and the Civil Rights Movement going on at the time. But largely it functions as a tribute to Dr. King.
When his asshole manager "Colonel" Tom Parker got wind of it, he notoriously said, "This is NOT the kind of music that Elvis does". Both he and the producers really didn't want him to do it because they thought it was too risky at the time. Especially to conclude a Christmas television special on NBC that families Across America and really people all over the world would be watching. But Elvis insisted on doing it, and it is now considered one of the greatest performances of that era.
But damn! You did what about one in every four reactors does, and that is to cut it off too early and you missed the iconic mic drop moment at the end. It might even be the original mic drop moment. Immediately after you cut it off, he drops his arms, brings the mic up to his mouth, and clearly emotionally and physically drained, and still breathing heavily, he quietly and in a humble way says, "Thank you. Goodnight". And then apparently he went into a room backstage, curled up into a ball, and cried for hours.

3 6 Mafia did a cover of In The Ghetto, actually. That's how much he influenced black artists, to this day. I'll defer to Miss Reimer for info on the song itself, but suffice it to say, Elvis typically avoided politics in terms of his public comments. If someone asked him about the Vietnam War, he'd say, "I'm just a singer, ma'am." He knew his place. But this was the one time, through his music, that he made a sociopolitical statement of any kind.
He grew up in dirt poor, mostly black neighbourhoods in Tupelo and Memphis, so he knew what they went through and how much Dr. King meant to his friends, including BB King. This was a show of support for them and a plea to end racism and discrimination. He had to fight to get this to air, because Colonel Parker thought the assassinations had nothing to do with them. He thought this was a "Commie song" and sensed a backlash would be coming among white fans. There are countless stories of Elvis in private sticking his neck out for black people.
The guy hired a group called the Sweet Inspirations, a black female singing group like the Temptations, and Whitney Houston's mom was a member of that group. They always got the celebrity treatment, even in places like Texas, where he had them sit next to him in a convertible that drove around a stadium, I believe in Houston. And if some racist hotel manager didn't want them there, he wasn't staying there either.
Some black artists in the 50s initially thought he was just a white copycat who was stealing their music. But him sticking his neck out for their music opened doors for those original artists. Little Richard said Elvis absolutely made him a much bigger star by singing a cover of Tutti Frutti. Elvis didn't steal anything. What he did was he took music that was being held back because of racism and said, "don't worry, guys, I've got this." And he kicked the door down so that they could walk through with him. People underestimate the impact of Ed Sullivan calling Elvis a "decent, fine boy." To that point, they thought he was possessed by the devil like all the black people they hated. Suddenly, it became okay to listen to Tutti Frutti, and that meant listening to Little Richard and others. All that hippie stuff that changed how people thought and expressed themselves started with Elvis.

Elvis sang this song at the end of a nationwide Christmas TV special. His manager had told him to end with a happy Christmas carol ending. Elvis, instead, had this song written for him to perform as a tribute to Martin Luther King, Jr. & Robert F Kennedy, both of whom were killed earlier in 1968. This show was taped in Aug to be televised in early December. You should definitely go back and again Watch Elvis Presley and the Black Community - that echo will never die. Parts 1 & 2.
