    Have you ever seen a man look so great? He could have just walked out and Elvis would have elicited the same response. Trust me, I was in the audience in 1956 ,when he just walked to the microphone and the audience went “CRAZY”! Normal response in those days.

    He just got out of the Army where he was drafted for 2 years in the height of his career. He hadn't been seen for two years. He was nervous and he had never met Frank before this show. This was the Frank Sinatra show. This was in 1960 still fairly young here. He was told he had to wear a tux and not get to crazy with the shaken. Frank was older here and wasn't that crazy about having Elvis on his show but his ratings were sinking so he went along with it. Later they became great friends when Elvis got married and flew from Memphis to Vegas, Sinatra sent his private plane. When Elvis died, Sinatra said, "Elvis was a kind man who changed music and culture, I was just a singer, He was a dear friend." Watch the same time period, "Elvis Presley post Army interview" 1960 Graceland. That explains a lot about his thoughts and getting back into his career after a 2 year Army stint in Germany on the Russian Border. He was promoted to Sargeant. Thanks man.

      That's a great interview pick the 12+ min version to get the full interview. When the show began Elvis walked in, in his Uniform. Nancy was Frank's Daughter and had just become engaged.

    Elvis's voice in the early 1960s was so beautiful and sweet, it changed and became fuller as he matured. This Frank Sinatra 'Welcome Home Elvis' TV show was immediately he'd got back from doing army duty in Germany so the first time the fans had seen him live for 2 years, no wonder they were going wild! He was extremely nervous (unbelievably had stage fright before every concert right to the end!), plus I'm sure he was trying not to overshadow Frank cos after all it was his show. If you research, you'll find that Frank didn't have much time for rock n roll or Elvis back in the 50s.

    Story goes that Sinatra's weekly show ratings were low. They paid Elvis more $ than Sinatra himself earned for this show. I forget the exact amount but it was an astronomical amount of $ for like 9 minutes of air time. And yes, the ratings for the show soared - something like 72% of the TV viewing audience tuned in for it. Amazing the draw that Elvis had. For those of us who were there, it felt kind of like changing of the guard. How hard that may have been on Sinatra's ego. He was only in his 40's at the time. But Sinatra was my parents' icon. Elvis was ours.

    • @philipkoen5811
      @philipkoen5811 Před 3 dny +2

      If I remember correctly, they had to pay Elvis $125.000 for those 9 minutes. (Parker knew how to make a deal/money....that's why this was his last tv-performance for 8 yrs.....Elvis became too expensive to put him on TV)

      I think he came out so shyly because he wasn't sure what reaction he was going to get. He had to keep his movements down also. But the reactions of the crowd, I think, he was thrilled. Been 2 years since he had heard those screams. Elvis and Frank were friends until Elvis passed away. He had nothing but good to say about Elvis. ❤❤❤ Thank you for sharing.

  • @timcarr6401

    Elvis was trying to exercise some restraint here. He couldn't just let go. He didn't want Frank to be embarrassed. Before he got to know Elvis he called rockers "cretinous goons."

  • @carolhayar3037
    @carolhayar3037 Před 7 dny +7

    Yes, it's all those little gestures that made his performances very special AND unique -- because it was not something we saw from singers back then. Performers sang w-barely a movement -- almost as of they had a shot of sedation.
    An interesting observation by a reactor during "Witchcraft" -- this person said Sinatra was pitch perfect (he was); Sinatra was louder than Elvis (he was); AND he was FLAT (absolutely). And there lies the big difference -- Sinatra may have had a good voice but no one ever put in the powerful emotion & passion that Elvis put into his songs -- even the upbeat ones.

  • @robindehlinger4698
    @robindehlinger4698 Před 6 dny +3

    He laughs like that because he is amused at the reaction just to him snapping his fingers and shaking his head. He knows exactly what he's doing and it's funny to him. During the 68 Special, he said "it never ceases to amaze me." He's 25 years old and just out of the army. It's interesting because Sinatra said terrible things about him and rock and roll, but now he's the All American boy. It's obvious Elvis has taken over the top spot previously held by Sinatra in his day. But, they remained friendly.

  • @jayeginn5963
    @jayeginn5963 Před 7 dny +13

    The inside joke you are referring to is spot on: in the 1968 Comeback Special you can see it the clearest in a moment when he's delivering a scripted line and Charlie Hodge interrupts him to pick a piece of tissue off his cheek. Elvis had just wiped the sweat off his face with a tissue a girl in the audience gave him and a little piece got stuck on his face without him being aware of it. Charlie got the piece of tissue off of Elvis' cheek and gave it to a girl in the audience who then, seriously, proceeded to PUT IT IN HER PURSE!!!! Elvis saw it and was both amused and embarrassed and what he said then is probably the same thing that went through his mind in this 1960 performance "Never ceases to amaze me, boy, I tell ya." while shaking his head in embarrassed disbelief.

    Sinatra had no time for Elvis or Rock & Roll in Elvis's early years in the industry and said a lot of really negative things about Elvis. They eventually became good friends and Frank came to appreciate Elvis as the talented singer & performer that he was. First time performing since he got out of the service, Elvis was extremely nervous in addition to which, he's singing in front of Frank who was an icon himself at the time. Never cared for Sinatra myself; he was of my mother's generation & I thought him boring compared to Elvis & his music. Still, have to give kudos where they're due. Elvis said that he was always nervous when first appearing on stage & that it usually took him 3 songs in to get comfortable.

    Elvis was back from the Army he was at a crossroad in his career. He never really performed on stage except when he went to a Pearl Harbor event in 1961 or 62 he started to make movies until 68. He was worried about his career when he did his 68 comeback special but it proved he was still The King and from there he was starting to tour again and made his Vegas appearance from then on.

    Both men were nervous CV! Elvis, because it was his nature and Frank because he had launched a very derisive commentary against Elvis a few years back. Elvis’ response was very complimentary to Sinatra though finished with “but Mr. Sinatra should not have said that.” I have read that with the exception of Sammy Davis Jr., Sinatra and friends snubbed during the taping of this show. Sadly, this was quite common for Elvis as he performed at various venues as he was regarded as an uncouth, no-talent, hick. Frank had also asked Elvis to ease up on his gyrations so as not to offend his audience. I am left to wonder if anyone ever worried about offending Elvis. He was considered open game by the established entertainment et others. Since ratings were Sinatra objective, he doused Elvis with a very hefty sum of money for his nine minute appearance. I suppose there was some revenge in that. Oh yes! I almost forgot that Elvis first movie after returning from the Army was GI Blues in which Juliet Prowse was his leading lady. Juliet was a fiancé at the time to Frank Sinatra. She and Elvis had a fling. Now that’s revenge!
