- Ryan Condal, Miguel Sapochnik, and more discuss why they opened the episode with the Great Council, the juxtaposition between the tournament and Queen Aemma’s birthing sequence, and the motivation behind Viserys choosing Rhaenyra as heir.
I love how restrained this episode was. I was worried that emphasis would be put on spectacle, and while there was spectacle the focus of the episode was on the dialogue and setting up plot points, which is what made Game of Thrones great in the first place. Also love how Miguel pointed out that spectacle should add to the story, not be there for the sake of it, which is what D&D seemed to have forgotten in the later seasons of GoT.
Dumb and Dumber kinda forgot about good writing.
@@HighAdmiral D & D forgot about everything that makes Game of Thrones great
It was a nice balance :D really looking forward to the next 9 Sundays
🔥 ➕🩸
George R. R. Martin's influence seeps through this episode which, in my opinion, is why this first episode was a success. I just hope they keep him around this time.
@@electronichq974 well he was around for thw whole season so we know it's gonna be as good if not even better throughout
Aemma and the C section… I couldn‘t hold back my tears. In the book emotions were missing but the show absolutely did it. Daemon is my favorite character and Matt Smith did amazing in portraying him ❤️
Yess Daemon also my fav character
Tears for what it is just a show
@@DR.DisInfect some people are emotional, some aren't, calm down Hulk Hogan, we get you're tough
czcams.com/video/1HQDfGu1-tA/video.html
That scene gutted me, no pun intended. And the thing is, it was so hard partially because they didn't even ask or or explain why they did it. They just gutted her.
Matt Smith's choices in how he portrays Daemon are spot-on. That moment of utter tenderness during the funeral shows that he is more than just the menace Otto Hightower would convince everyone he is.
I also love that the prophecy ties everything together and makes Rhaenyra's motives more than just ambition.
Mercurial, violent, impulsive, dangerous...because nothing less will protect those he cares for from those who would prey on them.
i'd disagree with you on that. i thought he was too much "here, i am a psycho" but it seems it improves over the episodes, so let's see it
I completely agree about Rhaenyra. The book "Fire and Blood" makes it clear that Rhaenyra desires the throne, but never gives a reason beyond the fact that she felt it was her right as her father's eldest living child.
I don't like the prophecy BS because I worry they will use it as motivation for Rhaenyras actions throughout the show. Or retroactively change why Aegon conquered the realm. Instead of making it some existential threat, let it be natural human ambitions.
I see a whole ton of Emmys' coming his way
Milly as Rhaenyra, her screen presence is astonishing to me. I love this character already and I’m interested to see how Emma D’Arcy continues in later episodes. And King Viserys is really being set up as a tragic character. His scene with Alicent was extremely well done. So much emotion and so little dialog.
Emma D'arcy looks like Hunter Schafer from Euphoria.
@@Ellie-qv4pu I thought the same!
@@Ellie-qv4pu oh she totally does! I was like “she kinda looks like someone but idk who”
Ya she’s like an older Hunter
I would like to point out that Emma D'Arcy actually IS in the first episode - Emma is the narrator of the first scene.
I hope they mention how Viserys, despite seeming so amiable and even pliable sometiems, was Balerion the Black Dread's last rider- and that he claimed the ancient beast for himself when he was a child. To be clear, Balerion was so large he could swallow mammoths whole. Viserys did NOT lack for nerve.
Yeah, but at the same time, like he said, flying a dragon is a lot different than being king
@@carlycrays2831 true, but still it showed that regardless he was ruthless, even barely having an inch when daemon cleared up the city, its like oh good one less problem.
He rode Balerion BECAUSE he was old. That kind of fits into his character model. He's has a more commoner approach to dragons it seems.
by the time he claimed balerion, Balerion was ancient and he only flew Balerion before it died.
True but by that time Balerion hadn't had a new rider for decades since Maegor's death. He was described in the books as being slow and old and Viserys wanted to fly him to Dragonstone but didn't know if Balerion had the strength in him to make it.
It's not too much to say it's the best opening episode of any series I have seen this year.
What series have you watched? Doesn't sound like much
Not every series has same story. This is enough to hold the audience.

@@teonnechapman1420 name one better than this one
The birth scene was amazing, better than I expected. To put it as a battleground also, gives respect to women who give birth. Very important
I think everybody agrees that this episode, this first episode was pure absolutely gold in every way, if they put this amount of hype on this episode, omg I can't imagine the end of this season, amazing job...
Some of the writing was weak BUT they got the spirit. I liked how many flags they showed compared to the original show. We see the flags for main and sub houses like house cole, dondarion, valeryon, Hightower. I got hope for this series
You'll see, at the end there will be a big reveal. You all think that it'll go a certain a way, but it wont... It's going to be very interesting
Perfect first episode to introduce the story leading to the Dance of Dragons. Milly, Paddy, and Matt all nailed their parts as Targaryens while Rhys clearly established himself as a great conspiring figure in his own game of thrones while involving Alicent
czcams.com/video/1HQDfGu1-tA/video.html
Who is Rhys?
@@ramonzeiro Otto Hightower’s actor
@@brendonsmith3080 Yes he's already sus to me...
The fact we don't hear of them or the Valerian family in the original #GoT says to me they don't make it out of this dance of dragons
Just when I thought I was out they pull me back in. If that first episode is a sign of things to come then bravo. HBO has another masterpiece it can add to its long list of amazing shows.
This will be a great story telling than Game Of thrones, because it has a established ending. And they will look Stupid if go to faraway from the story.
To a certain extent the credit for these always has to go back to GRRM. I mean even Dan and Dave were able to put together a masterpiece for the first 4 seasons of thrones by just following his work.
However, the casting and acting in this so far has been brilliant has to be said. Matt Smith in particular as Daemon is elevating the show for me. Usually when I see an actor pull off charisma AND nuance together in a performance (good actors can pull off one or the other) I'd call it a "brilliant" performance, and so far that's what I've seen.
The episode was kind of horrible. I’m hoping that this was just the pilot but the only things going for it are Matt Smith and the Hightower actor. The cinematography and editing were so distracting at times. The editing especially would cut to off scene characters that didn’t have anything to do with the main scene. It was kind of a jumbled mess. And the dialogue of course is on par with the latter seasons of GOT. I wasn’t expecting it to be premium game of thrones dialogue because the book that this new show is based on isn’t written like the got books. There are no pov chapters in fire and blood. It’s basically written like a history book. And the dialogue is rather bland as the writers of the show cannot match George’s modes of persuasion from his got books.
Hopefully this is just pilot missteps and corrections are made in subsequent episodes
I'm still bitter about The season finale. I don't know if I want to sit this out or not.
@@DrVonJay pure L take
It was probably the most information packed, event filled, visually great, greatly acted pilot episode, I ever saw.
hbo supremacy
Viserys talking about Aegon's dream "The Song of Ice and Fire" gave me chills.
Then I remember Episode 6 of the Last Season of Game of Thrones.
I had to justify it to myself as this is all about clarifying the books, not the show, I think that's why GRRM is so involved.
The last season is only 6 episodes...
@@arubial1229 Yeah my bad.
Aegon: "Targaryen dreams are not like the dreams of others. Our dreams come to pass. I dreamt of a long-night that would last a generation--actually, no, it only last like a couple days and only affected Winterfell. That winter it turns out only lasts like a couple months also, making it the shortest winter in history. But many people die...maybe? I'm not sure. All the lords have plot armor and I thought the dothraki died but they were all magically back again in my dream. Anyway, a little girl shanks the bad guy and then Westeros becomes a Democracy. I guess the dream wasn't that bad after all".
Lmao my roommate went ballistic with rage when we watched that scene. You're telling me the legend of the night king, a creature that CAN'T EVEN BE KILLED BY DRAGONS, and was created THOUSANDS of years ago, came to the head of the House of the Dragon thousands of years after the Night King's creation, and now Rhaenyra is getting as a gift the knife that (SPOILER) ARYA is going to use to kill him.
Why do the Targaryens have anything to do with this when their reign began millennia after the Night King's creation? How did Littlefinger end up with that knife? Why did Sam and Aegon coincidentally come up with the same name for the same events? The answer is go fuck yourself.
It's like they're trying to foreshadow that the long night is going to have something to do with the Targaryens when we already know that the only involvement they had with it was to give the night king his own Dragon.
The episode was very beautiful, thank you hbo for the legendary series
czcams.com/video/1HQDfGu1-tA/video.html
I feel like Viserys is Ned Stark and Robert Baratheon combined. He's a character most people are going to love despite his flaws but he will only appear in Season 1. Also, I think he should trust Daemon instead of Otto. Daemon might be a troublemaker but at least he has no hidden motive, Otto looks pretty suspicious to me.
I bet you’re right on that.
i know ottos gonna be a scheming bastard. a fast favourite character for me.
Otto is like a blend of Littlefinger and Tywin.
I love otto
I was getting Littlefinger vibes.
My grandmother died at 21 while having my mother the same way Aemma dies: during labour and having a C section. I always think how scared should have been back then. Poor her. She was just a child.
Well done Ryan and Miguel and everyone else involved. You honored GRRM work but still made it your own. I really loved Paddy’s performance.
Rhaenys and Corlys during the tournament was hilarious! I love their dynamic and I can't wait to see their badassery on screen.
alll the shade!!
her gesture when throwing shade while admiring her manicure. 😂😂😂.
I love the small details in this show that add so much to the storytelling. For example when Rhaenyra has to use her dragon Syrax to light the pyre, Syrax hesitates and groans as if he doesn't want to which illustrates the emotional connection they have to their dragons and the dragons complexity
Aemma’s death is so painful to watch, it really gave me that emotion so powerful i was crying up to the end. The secret of the kings passed by aegon was so great too!!
The void which got created from the absence of GOT is now filled. There are mentions of Daenerys Targaryen. We all still miss her. Rhaenyra reminds us of young Daenerys . They started with the episode with the house of dragon theme and ended it with the GOT theme. It was so soothing and promising at the same time.
"Listen daughter, this prophecy is super important and definitely won't be resolved by a girl with a knife who will have nothing to do with us."
Loved this show!!!! I WAS ACTUALLY SURPRISED!!! I’m already addicted!!! This showrunner is OBVIOUSLY BETTER THAN D&D!! He obviously cares about the story and the fans!!! ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT!! Ready for next week already!’
As long as they don’t rush it it is fine
D&D adapted all of Game of thrones even it’s best seasons. Before you say, “they started sucking after they ran out of source material,” this new show is also an adaptation
Wasn't better then GoT first episode though but wasn't bad
D&D made one of the best television shows of all time, and claiming these guys are better after ONE EPISODE is absolutely fucking ridiculous.
Loool you seen the entire season already ? If not calm down
The first episode of HOTD is just WOW. Some reviews DARED to say that it doesn't have that "hook" that the original series did... THEY ARE WRONG. I AM HOOKED.
Mental. It hooked me big time. Tragedy, conflict, romance, violence, it had everything.
first episode was stunning, one of the best openings to a series EVER.
I remember how Miguel Sapochnik directed all of the huge action episodes in game of thrones such as Harranhaul, the battle of the bastards and the final battle etc
And I love how they’ve brought him in for house of the dragon
Fantastic producer and he gets into the detail and every single scene has a purpose to portray a story
Great to be back! Hats off guys, can’t wait for the rest of the eps.
What a brilliant start of a season. Great performances, pacing, music, cinematography and script. I can’t wait for more!! Let’s get ready for SundayHOD 🤩
Everyone, you did a fantastic job with this first episode! I missed this world so much, so thank you all for creating this show!
What a great start. I really feel like I'm back in Westeros, exactly as it was (but earlier, of course).
The best part was just being in the palace and feeling like you came home.
@@carlycrays2831 It was fucking magnificent.
After hearing that jon snow will have a spin-off sequel in the form of a season 9 this will only make me happyer. If the show prison break has managed to come up with a new season after so many years, the best series of all time can do this too to get a redemption arc.
This episode is a great start, I love how detailed this all is, including little things like adding that the king, is king of the Rhoynar aswell, overall I think you guys doing great telling the story!
Tremendous start, this could reach GoT levels of hype, just you wait.

Thank you so much for giving us a glimpse inside this episode. The episode blew my mind. I'm not GOT book reader but I love the shows and having this explained helps a lot. 👍
Idk for me that speech about the prophecy is enough to reboot season 8. GREAAAT EP 🔥🔥🔥

I think the Jon Snow spin-off show in development will cover the Prince prophecy
@@jakebiomask the prophecy already happened. White walkers are already dead tho right?
@@turbz1626 Maybe he will still "bring the dawn"? Who knows. But i feel like they have something up their sleeve for the character if they are making a whole show around him. George RR Martin approved it when Kit Harrington approached them with it, so i'm curious if it's gonna address the Prince that was promised at all since they never followed through with an answer in GOT
@@jakebiomask I thought they dropped the other spinoffs
Miguel Sapochnik directed some of the most beautiful episodes of GoT (Hardhome, Battle of the Bastards). I´m glad that he has a big role on HOTD
WHAT AN EPISODE. Miguel and the entire team, you are amazing.
Honestly what a great start and episode. The summary, the character introductions, the dragons everything was perfect.
The dream was clearer than a memory. Our son was born wearing Aegon’s iron crown. And I heard the sound of thundering hooves, splintering shields, and ringing swords. And I placed our son upon the Iron Throne as the bells of Grand Sept tolled, and all the dragons roared as one.
Such a well-written line. I hope they bring it back as prophesy is fulfilled. Down the line.
Amazing work, really enjoyed the first episode. I love the direction they took with aemmas death I think it added emotion that was needed and I wasn't expecting it. The character development has been given a great start, I feel I can already somewhat understand some of the characters. Already in love with daemon. Gold star guys x

Mad respect for the jousting POV shots...
The mix of subtlety and on the nose gratuity in the birthing scene felt like peak Game of Thrones. It makes me happy that episode one was as good as it was.
MASTERFUL job tying the 2 series together at the end too
This was a good episode to set the tone and bring old/new fans into the story. It shows specific key parts that makes everyone understand the situation and what this story will eventually lead towards. Interested in seeing how this goes and I cannot wait. My prediction is we don't see the older Rhaenerya, Alicent, and the newfound brothers of Rhaenerya until perhaps later on (6 to 10). Believe that the end of this season will end off towards the main part of this series which I feel could very well be expanded towards 3 more seasons.
I think they'll so that. Not like other shows with stupid timelines, which is reassuring
I was worried they were going to keep going back and forth in time every episode, that would have been awful. I love that they're going chronologically.
And I think season 1 will end with the first significant death to kick off the dance. You know... *that* one.
I think it will be much sooner. There is about 25 years from episode one to when the civil war even begins so they will have to advance and compress the timeline. They already have done it. Notice during the council of Jaehaerys to determine succession that Aemma was already pregnant but this didn't happen until 4 years after the council.
And you were exactly right lol. Rumor is season two is coming out spring 2024 😍😍
Loved the episode tonight! Well done! The Dragons are the Nukes of that era…

The background score of "The Prince that was promised" leading to a mix of Song of Ice and fire at the end is splendid.
Just wow! Knocked it out of the park with the first episode! Everything was flawlessly executed and everything great about GRRM's world were put on full display! I especially like the attention to detail when it comes to the house banners and the extravagant armor designs! It was almost a game in itself spotting houses you know from not only the previous show, but also the books themselves! So much looking forward to seeing more!

Cut shot to Viserys' dagger whose was Aegon's before him, which Arya used to kill NK with 200 years later. I also just realized that in GoT that knife was only used to kill one person in the whole show. Despite being around since episode 2.
Fantastic first episode. I love the symbolism with the tourney and the birthing scene. It was so visceral. And I kind of really love Daemon. Matt smith did a fantastic job by really layering Daemon and showing the complexities of his personality. Paddy did a great job with Viserys too. It's the subtle details of how the Iron Throne is not easy to sit on one slightly wrong movement and you will get cut immediately and not like some sofa/couch like how Jofferey used to sprawl on it
I've watched twice episode 1 it was epic and brutal in it's own way
The C section scene was terrifying, poor Aemma.
I am satisfied with the first episode that was so well done.
A really good first episode! Love the way Matt Smith portraits Daemon and i adore young Rhaenyra
Dragons went from 4K to 144p real quick lol
Amazing start tho!
I've been reading Fire & Blood recently, and while the prophecy itself is fine (it is hinted at plenty of times that Aegon had these dreams, along with plenty of other Targaryens), I do have a problem with it being Rhaenyra's driving force. I feel like in the book it is quite clear she does just want power; she wants what she believes is hers, by right. The only parallel I can think of is Stannis: he wanted to claim his birthright, while also believing himself to be a prophesised hero. However, Stannis' camp loudly proclaims that he is "Azor Ahai", while Rhaenyra keeps the secret close, apparently. Why would she hold such a vital secret close to her chest? Maybe because in the end she does only care about power. It just strikes me as a little strange.
The rest of the episode was great, the proper portrayal of the colour and vibrancy of the time is demonstrated very well. In the books it is stated clearly and often that these people love colour, and colour always surrounds them. I loved how the tourney was juxtaposed with the birthing, really hammering home how different the world is for men and for women.
Matt Smith and Paddy Considine steal the show, but Rhys Ifans is very convincing as Otto Hightower as well. Much like with Game of Thrones, the casting is on-point. I hope the series continues in form after such a strong start.
Amazing work guys!!!
I was so disappointed with the last season of G.O.T. that I was set to not watch this show. Saw the trailer and was impressed. So I watched the episode and was blown away. The child birth seen did me in. Couldn't hold back the tears. The whole episode was amazing. I can only hope that the rest of this season is like this.
Thank you. I also loved that you kept the breaking down of the episode for those of us who haven't read the books. Helps explain a lot.
I need a History and Lore series for this
I saw all the Game of Thrones history and lore Videos, I just needed a History and Lore Series for this Series, talking about the Other Targaryen Kings like Jaeherys, or even talking about the Tragedy of Summerhall. Their is a lot of Content the History and Lore videos didn't cover that I think House of Dragons can touch on, on their own History and Lore
