I like how Daemon, Rhaneyra and Viserys are having conflicts among themselves but are still not willing to hurt or kill each other or let some third person say or do bad things to any three of them. They are a family. When Daemon says to Lord Coryls (I don’t remember the exact dialogue) that he can speak of his brother whatever way he wants to but no one else can disrespect him, is typical Siblings dynamic.

5:20 That's interesting, I saw Alicent's actions quite different than her actress explains it. I thought that she visited the king purely because her father wanted it. And she understood that Otto precisely wanted her to court the king and was using her as a tool to gain power and influece over the king. That makes her unhappy and that's the reason she fiddles around with her finger nails.

    • @Regenmacher175
      @Regenmacher175 Před rokem +51

It's likely a mix of various elements: she might appreciate Viserys' company whilst also being aware that this is where her father wants her to be. She was initially not courting the king but rather showing empathy for his situation. She seems at odds with herself because she was raised to be a dutiful and obedient daughter but she might secretly want to be more like Rhaenyra who does not take conventions so seriously and who she sees as having more freedom than she does.

Why are people misunderstanding the Alicent and Otto characters so badly!?! They are talking about them as pure villains, while in the actual show their actions are generally rational and justifiable to an extent. Alicent was fiddling with her finger nails from the very first scene of the show onwards; it has nothing to do with her visiting Viserys. Otto simply sent her to console the grieving king - as his hand this is justifiable and understandable. Of course, it would be in his (family's) interests for the king to have a good relationship with his daughter, but it's not like Otto could have foreseen or somehow manipulated the king into choosing Alicent for his wife.

Even worse, Viserys I rejects a half-Targaryen (Laena, aged 12) for a Hightower (Alicent), daughter of a powerful, ambitious Great House and daughter of his own Hand. Then he produces three sons and daughter with her, all dragon riders. Given prior precedents 92 and 101AL, the lords of the realm would have chosen the direct male line in Aegon II, had there been a Great Council in 228 or 229.
Rhaenyra did not help matters with her birthing three dons who looked nothing like her or her husband, and everything like her suspected lover Harwin Strong.Visually obvious, which didn't help her claim. Legally they were Laenor's but his parents insisted that the two older sons wed their cousins Baela and Rhaena, daughters of Daemon and Laena.. And so it went.
By contrast, Alicent's four children wrre clearly Targaryens. And dragon riders, to boot.
Viserys I shoukd not have married if he wanted his daughter tobascend the Iron Throne. He and Rhaenyra mafe several other mistakes.

I know this is fiction, but it’s often compared to the Middle Ages. It would have been almost unthinkable for a woman (females became women at 14-15 and were ready to marry) to visit the private rooms of a male - especially unaccompanied. The fact that her father told her to do this is basically saying “go to the king. Flirt. Make it known you are charming and witty. Keep your maiden hood but ease his suffering by tending to his ego.”
The only reason her reputation wouldn’t have been tarnished by this action is because she was visiting the king.
So yeah, her dad pimped her out, but she was very aware of what the circumstances were. In many instances the family would have their entire future wrapped up with how well of a marriage a daughter made. If the daughter married a high born noble, the father could expect to receive land(s) which would generate income. The fathers would have also ensured their standing at court, and as such, power.

I don't think Alicent ever thought of courting viserys originally. From episode 1, you can see that she did so to please her father. Then she started to maneuver her way into the king's good side by telling him of her own grief. Viserys first saw alicent as confidant rather than comfort but when faced with the pressure of re-marrying, he saw alicent as the best choice. So, it can be said that otto knew the king would prefer to someone that he can relate to(grief wise) and Orchestrated the whole chain of events. And Alicent may have confide in the king about her loss of loved one, but understood the position she found herself in and what it can do to her family status or her own ambitions.

For people commenting about Emily’s (the actress who plays Alicent) interpretation of Alicent - I also think that because they aged Alicent down in this, Emily’s interpretation could be that Alicent is far more naive than she was in the books. Because of that, Otto can and does use her as a pawn without Alicent needing to be in on the master plan so to speak. Otto knows that Alicent will be charming and provide everything the king needs without Otto ever needing to coach her, so really his only instruction is for her to continue to see him. She did the same for the king prior, so in her mind it probably wasn’t that strange to now see Viserys regularly. For me, having her aged down changes a lot! It makes her a victim of Otto’s puppeteering the same as Viserys. What will be interesting is how her moral shift is portrayed once they age the characters up

Anyone with an attention span of more than 5 seconds can see from just 2 episodes that the Hightowers are actively working to undermine the Targaryens which is something those of us who read the books know very well, but they are afraid to take up arms against them. In short, their entire family is a bunch of b*tches and the biggest b*tch of them all was Alicent. Greens and Blacks isnt it? And as far as spoilers go . . . . Yes we can go to fire and blood for the main outline, but that is STILL just a history, one man trying to sieve through the various contemporary sources and collate/compile a narrative that documents the things that happened and tries to explain the reasons behind them. All the while being subconsciously biased towards his own opinion AND consciously biased towards the prevailing political paradigm at the time of writing. So although we may think we know the main beats of the saga, I for one would not be surprised if the story that unfolds is different to what we think we know. Some events may have a lot more depth to them than you would guess from the history book. Some may take on subtly nuanced meanings and give rise to many varied and unforseen consequences merely because of a shift in context or maybe even a shift in perception. That's the unbridgeable gap between life and history. History tries to make sense of events and package them into a neatly normalised narrative, whereas life . . . Just happens. Im going to treat the show as 'life' where the fun is in seeing what really happened vs what the historian thinks are the important bits.

This show is embodying Thrones at its best - polictical intrigue galore, and when it comes to medieval style politics, child marriages were practically an institution; seeing how uncomfortable it makes many viewers feel (and rightly so) is just an indication how well the show is embodying these archaic practices (archaic in most parts of the world at least - child marriages still occur today). Still, not even European medieval royalty tended to marry their nearest kin by blood outside of cousin marriages. George definitely has some weird thing for incest in his stories, which is definitely less based in medieval history, but does perhaps draw from more ancient history - Greek or Roman for instance. Still, it's more his fantastical spin - the Targaryens viewing themselves as near-god like (deities are always propogating with their nearest relatives in many world mythologies) and the tradition of Valerian pure-blood lineages etc.

My favorite HOT D characters so far: Obviously, Daemon. He's a fan fav from book fans. He's GRRM's fav. But when we finally see what happens with Blood and Cheese, I can imagine people hating him as well. He'll have his share of haters but will have tons of fans including me.
That's what makes him so grey. You kinda don't know what he'll do next and sometimes you won't agree with his motives. But he's a morally grey character dedicated to his family. He wants affection and approval from his brother and even niece he crushes on. He's not as unpredictable as Homelander in The Boys. One punch to the stomach by Homelander and you're dead.
Daemon wasn't shown much in Ep 2 titled The Rogue Prince but you sense he was missing. You can feel his presence lost. But I also think he can be too charismatic that he can suck up the air in the entire room. We needed the other characters to shine and they did. Had we saw mostly Daemon, we wouldn't care what the others were doing or saying because we are too busy hanging onto Daemon's every word.
Daemon is like Zack Morris in Saved By The Bell. Take out Zack, and the other characters can start to shine more. Once he enters the room, all eyes and ears are on him. We'll start imitating "Matt Daemon's" voice by saying words like pack of hounds and squalor! Then Daemon also has this really cool walk. He walks with a confident swagger. Matt Smith is basically like Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight outshining Christian Bale!
Love Uncle Daemy the Demented. He enjoyed that insult from Criston Cole. I also like Rhaenyra. She is Daenerys/Arya but with a better actress who doesn't come off annoying as Emilia and Maisie were. 🤣 Milly did a great job. Too bad we'll only see her for half of this season. I'll likely be on her side the entire way over Alicent even though I find Olivia Cooke way more attractive than Emma D'Arcy. Olivia looks like Rose Byrne with a hint of Rachel Leigh Cook from She's All That.
I also like Viserys, Rhaenys, Lord Corlys, and I need to see more from Grand Maester Mellos. His entire push for Viserys to marry Laena in the maggots scene pissed off Otto so much, I'm starting to like that old man. I also like Otto in a Littlefinger/Tywin way. But between Team Black vs. Team Green, I'm going Black. At least for now...

Otto just has a daughter old enough to actually be pimping her out, and is probably hoping the king will take her to bed and then feel honor-bound to offer marriage. Suggesting Laena as a possible political match is consistent with Targaryen bloodline restriction, and the kind of things that happened in medieval Europe. The marriage itself likely would have waited a few years, but the betrothal could have been set while she was still young. Many betrothals were done while both the bride and groom were too young to even think about marriage--sometimes when one or both were infants.

Can you just make every episode two and a half hours long. Keep all the out-takes leaving nothing on the editors room floor for ultimate replenishment.

    Really excited for this!.
But it kinda brings back the disappointment of Dan and Dave wanting to cut and run so half arsed S7&8 with only a combined 13 eps.even nearly everyone was saying you need at S7,8&9 each with 10 eps to get there properly.

I like how they're not making Alicent and Viserys awkward. It's odd yeah but it's not awful.
And Laena is very awkward, but only because it's supposed to be.

Does anyone know the background music from 5:20 to 6:30?

it would have been good to have a scene of Viserys telling Alicent in private that he wanted to marry her, or did she already knew that he was going to say that? because what if she says No in the council? haha

The only thing I feel was a little out of place was the story of the king choosing Alicient. Like I feel like there shoulda been more a Robb Talisa kinda connection displayed or at least just more storytelling to kinda hint at it more than her just being there to talk to him occasionally. I guess getting the stone masons to repair the piece kinda helped but 1 or 2 scenes more like that one might've been better

I think that was the point. To make it seem like a surprise to the ones who didn't read the books.
