Jackie was able to live in luxury because of her stepfather Hugh D. Auchincloss. He owned Merrywood and Hammersmith Farm. Lasata was the Bouvier family summer home. Jackie's father lost most of his money and their family lived in a luxurious apartment paid for by Jackie's maternal grandfather T. H. Lee. After Janet divorced John Bouvier, she had the good luck to marry the very wealthy Auchincloss.
O pai dele mesmo bebía pra caramba.
It wasn’t luck. Those women stalk rich men.
pronounced: Au-KIN-kloss, not Au-CHIN-kloss per the voiceover. Otherwise, interesting photos and history, and good jazz music in the background. Ironically, Janet, Jackie's mother, was always critical of Jackie -- probably because of Jackie's undying affection for her father, "Black" Jack, whom Janet had divorced; and yet, Jackie outshone her mother in every way, especially in beauty. (Janet was a dog, imo. woof!)
They were all so beautiful...but my favorite was the first home. It was casually elegant with many large windows.
Yes!! Stunning ⚜️🥰
As high school kids growing up in Northern Virginia, my friends and I would drive around McLean and Great Falls admiring all the beautiful mansions and wondering who lived in them. The wealthy really are on a different level and the homes were magnificent.
Did you know the Mclean home is now owned by the Saudi government? They bought it in 2018 for 43 million.
All three are stunning but Merrywood is magnificent! I lived in DC for years and one Thanksgiving a work colleague invited me to his grandmother's home in McLean, and Merrywood was their "neighbor"...I was in awe. The homes in that area are simply beyond.
No wonder Jackie had such wonderful tasted. She was surrounded by so much casual elegance growing up. Love all of these!
I understand that Hammersmith Farms may have been lost due to stock market decline/depression. So Jackie's mother, Janet and step father, Hugh, at the end of their lives had to sell that house and buy much smaller house close by. That was terrible for them ! And when Hugh died, Jackie's mother would only be happy still living at Hammersmith so Jackie made deal with new owners for her mother to live in the servants cottage on the property. This had to done because Janet, her mother developed alzheimers and insisted that she still lived there ! And there were times when she went into the "big house" still thinking that she lived there ! Unbelievable by true happpening that I read in a biography about Jackie.
Retired Teacher here 37 years! My favorite part is all the bookcases filled with many wonderful books! The French doors , and all the trees, garden and nature are wonderful too! 🥰🥰🥰🇩🇪🇨🇭🇺🇲💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙
A beautiful Lady with a lot of class rest in peace Jacky Kennedy ❤❤ Australia ❤
Hammersmith farm!!! Gorgeous property! The vastness of the estate and proximity to the sea
I agree!!! So beautiful
I've been to Hammersmith Farm several times over the years. It's so beautiful there right on the water. Peaceful to watch the sailboats go by.
Without a doubt for me the first home shown...stately elegant and just enough pizazz to let everyone know you got it just right! I think the most beautiful home I have ever seen!
So glad you loved it!! Yes such an incredible home!!
I had seen this home before in a video tour...I prefer the updated furnishings but the moment I saw the entrance hall and staircase I fell in love
I really enjoyed your story on Delmonico's...did you see the series The Alienist? 1897 Delmonico's is heavyly featured..
Hammersmith is what i love, cozy, ecletic exterior, it has such a charm, and the surroundings are beautiful!
AN interior design masterclass. delightful
Aw thank you!!!💕💕
The first home was my favourite. Then Hammersmith. I couldn’t really appreciate the 2nd home as much, due to the decorating, which was , as you said, cold and sparse.
What magnificent homes. She really was our princess.
What beautiful homes. Truly suited to beautiful Jackie. There will never be another to equal her in every way.❤
Such a wonderful video seeing the childhood homes of such an important historic figure. My personal favorite is Merrywood. It retains a warm, family home sensibility, despite its impressive grandeur. And the grounds look spectacular.
Thank you so much Susan for your kind comment!! Yes, love Mereywood!
I love it! I would love to see Marie Antoinette’s houses and palaces and cottages! I think you’d have fun doing Jayne Mansfields pink palace too!
Thank you!! You got it! It’s on the list!
I loved Merrywood with all the wonderful French Doors and views from them. So lovely.
Wow!! Such beautiful homes . For me it’s really a toss up between Merrywood & Hammersmith. Merry wood would be the first choice . Hammersmith is equally opulent . Love the elegant exterior and design of both homes . Very large and spacious. Beautifully appointed furnishings and luxurious. Hammersmith is hardly “a farm”. It is a grand estate. Jackie grew up with much class and luxury around her. LaSada is nice on the outside but to me is too bland and flat looking inside . No pizzas or color like the other two homes which have way more pinache and style that jumps out . Real Cultured Elegance. Jackie lived in comfort that’s for sure . Such an iconic First Lady but for such a short time. Beautiful video!!👌🥇⭐️💯😉🇨🇦🇨🇦🌸🌺
Hi Laura Aren’t they!! Indeed!! I called it a farm because it was a working farm for a great amount of time! But you are right it is a magnificent grand estate! Yes Jackie was a wonderful lady! Thank you so much❤️⚜️💓🌷
Hard to choose which one I would pick as these iconic homes are all beautiful. But, the one that made my aesthetic heart skip a beat was Merrywood! Even though Hammersmith Farm commands great views of the sea and I live near the sea in New England, the setting of Merrywood is simply gorgeous! As well as the interior of the home as well. Must be even more gorgeous in person especially when those brilliant magenta azaleas and rhododendrans are in full bloom! Thanks for the grand tours!♥♥♥
I love the architecture of Merrywood, Georgian/Neoclassical would be my choice for my dream mansion. Space and quiet land all around are the greatest luxuries of all.
Each home is a remarkable and prestigious piece of real estate. Just one note: there's no "r" in the pronunciation of Auchincloss.
Unfortunately, Hammersmith Farm is now back to being a private residence and no longer open to the public. I was able to tour it several times when it was open (with much of the original Auchincloss furniture). The stair hall (and stairs) and dining room were originally the same dark wood as the living room but were painted white "to lighten the gloom." An interesting feature in the dining room is that those large windows can be lowered into the floor opening up the room to the outside. I once mentioned that J. D. Rockefeller's 31 room apartment at 740 Park Avenue would make a good video. Well, 740 Park was built by James T. Lee, Jackie's maternal grandfather, and she also lived there as a child. Excellent video.
Hi Louis! Thank you for reminding me about his apartment!! I’ll put it on the list! Wow how excellent that you got to tour Hammersmith while it was open to the public! Yikes I hate when they paint the natural wood white! Wow I didn’t know that about her grandfather building 740 park avenue! There are a few other homes she lived in as a child that I didn’t mention, and she certainly lived in so many houses throughout her life!
@@CulturedElegance There's a good book about 740 by Michael Gross. It tells of the only time Jackie's mother was left speechless: she once got mad at her daughters' governess and slapped her; but then the governess hauled off and slapped her right back!
Thank you for the update Louis. I too toured Hammersmith Farms, in 1990 I believe. Being a broker I too remember that the breakfast eating area windows lowered to the basement, for a full view of when President Kennedy would land in his Marine One helicopter and arrive home. A spectacular home, history and setting.
I liked the first home. I visited Hammersmith Farm years ago when it was open to the public. Beautiful overlooking the water.
So lovely!!
I liked the bedroom images because it reminds me of one of my favorite seasons of AHS.
Jackie, had a tough go of life, so much tragedy in such as that a life lived. Some look on and see an estate of extravagant splendor, a woman of elegant beauty/fashion style, a strong/woman of strength, that there is, there for all to see. There also, the heartbreak, the sorrowful heartbreaking tragedy, as so many others, perhaps it said too many others. Hug the people you care about, try to ‘be the reason another smiles’ feels comforted, continuously with different individuals. The experience on earth, can be tough, at times, for many/individuals, different stories, different experiences, all types/different ‘walks of life’. That is so much of what Jackie’s story/life reflects to teach, a woman of elegance who also experienced tough times, yet it seems, loved the people she loved, appreciated the places she got to experience, a woman, a beautiful lady.
They are all breathtaking!
Hammersmith was my favorite. Loved the weather beaten, not formal and stiff ambiance.
Merrywood Estate is gorgeous. I never really thought of America as having stately homes before, but I don't know what else you'd call it.
Yes, America does have some stately historic homes! Particularly on the East Coast. Unfortunately many historic, stately and absolutely gorgeous mansions in America have been destroyed! - few remain
@@CulturedElegance That’s such a shame. Is there any sort of charity or organisation that looks after what’s left, like the National Trust or something?
This is a bunkhouse compared to Biltmore House in Asheville, NC. 175,000 sq ft (that's a bit over 4 acres), 35 bedrooms, 43 bathrooms (in the late 1800s that was unheard of in the economically depressed NC mountains), 3 kitchens (each bigger than a large house, 3 rooms for gift-wrapping, 3 for flower arranging (grown in their 7,500 sq ft greenhouse), an indoor pool and bowling alley...I could go on for hours but I think you get the picture. If you haven't visited, I hope you can one day. Wear comfy shoes and bring lots of money. Admission starts at about $90.
Merrywoid is in, I think McLean Virginia. Just outside of Washington
Just outside of Washington, D C.
Wow I love them all. Just incredibly beautiful 😍
Hammersmith is my personal favorite because I identify with the styles. Beautifully warm and comfortable 💗
Merrywood is my favorite. Supreme elegance !
Very nice video. I've read of Merrywood in tons of books about Jackie and the Kennedys, but I never realized how stately, beautiful and huge it really was. Designer Tom Ford recently bought Lasata in East Hampton for $50 million. A drop in the bucket for him since he sold his company to Estee Lauder for $2 billion. Enjoyed this very much, but it's Auchincloss, not Archincloss.
Love your videos. I even love the music 🎶
La Sada is truly peaceful....i love it
@@ShankGardner-ps1hf thx dude
Lasada has been spoiled by the decorating.
Exactly!! It’s Hideous
I agree, but I like the architectural design of Lasata Estate the best. The other two are ridiculously sprawling.
Thank you loved them all what a life so sad she had such tragedies
Merrywood is absolutely delightful; one of the best examples of Georgian Revival architecture I have seen. Indeed, it would not look at all, out of place in an 18th-century English landscape. Some of the interior transformations over the years have been questionable tho'. It's a national treasure and I hope it is suitably protected for posterity.
East Hampton
i just found your channel, i love it!
Thank you!!!💓🥰
Fantastic video!!! Can you please consider doing one on the homes of Andy Warhol? I think that would be an amazing video.
Thank you so much!! Definitely!! Great idea I will put it on the list!!
@@CulturedElegance Andy Warhol is particularly interesting since his first house that he lived in with his Mother on Lexington Avenue was quite "Normal" then the house after that was more luxury in style (both the building and the contents) and he also had a holiday home in Montauk too.
@@CulturedElegance Thanks!!! No-one has done any videos on his homes yet.
All this before settling in on 5th ave, new York...wow
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ What a dreammmmmmmmm?😮
Residenza paradisiaca riverbero di UNA grandiosa Regina
Oh Faith-you create such wonderful content, which is visually interesting and help us understand history through the architecture and and interiors of these home. However, please don’t be insulted when I say that sometimes, the details are important, too. Learning the correct pronunciations of places and names only adds to the credibility of your stories. When you botch them, however, it not only hurts the ears, but makes it seem like you did no research (and I know that you did TONS of research!). So, a couple of things:
In one of your previous videos, you talked about on of the Kennedy’s homes as being on “North” Street in DC. Washington, DC (my hometown) has letter streets, and N doesn’t stand for North, it is a letter-the letter N. So, instead of assuming, it’s is important to look those things up, “McLean, VA” is pronounced MAC-LAIN, not anywhere near MAC-LEEN. Finally, the name Auchincloss is challenging, but it is pronounced (AWKINCLOSS). If you were German or spoke German, you could say it as they would: OW-SHIN-KLAUSS).
I’m really not trying to make you feel bad or beat you up, but too many CZcamsrs who are narrating these videos fail to do this kind of homework on what things are called, and how to pronounce names of places or their people. This makes a really wonderful video (like yours) seem amateurish and you a poorly-educated narrator, which them begs the question “why should I take this video seriously?” Again, not trying to bash you, but giving you a perspective from someone who has done thousands of lectures (many of them in a foreign language) and who knows that if you have a tricky word or name that you don’t know, going to film archives to have that person say their own name, or have people from the city say the name of the city, these little touches often make the difference between letting people know that YOU know what you are talking about, and them thinking that clearly you DON’T know what you are talking about. People like me, from the Washington, DC area know how to say the names of the streets, and know this very rich suburb of DC and how to pronounce it. You want your video to be taken seriously and enjoyed. Take the extra step of learning how to pronoun these names and places.
Hi Sheila! Thank you for your wonderful comment! Don’t worry, you are correct, I mispronounced Auchincloss, and got N street wrong… I actually always look up how to pronounce the names I do not know-just to be sure-and many of these sites that I look to are wrong! I later find out after I post a video and it’s all done… but it’s okay! As time goes on I learn more and old mistakes are corrected!
@@CulturedElegance: I know that you try your best, because it is really evident…your content is really lovely and I always learn new things. I am one of those people who is sensitive to these kinds of mispronunciations, especially when it is of places (and people) near my hometown. But thank you for not taking my criticisms badly and understanding that I am just trying to make a good thing better, and your content is a REALLY good thing. Best wishes to you!
Thank you Sheila!! I appreciate your comment greatly! And I can understand your frustration with mispronunciations! I will certainly continue to be better! ❤️ best wishes to you too!!
i love this channel
Thank you so much John!! Comments like yours make my day!! ⚜️

Sempre viveu no luxo agora deve estar no paraiso?
Honestly I thought all the ideas from the poll were good:) princess Diana’s suites next maybe?:)
Yes can’t wait to talk about hers!! That will be on Friday! On Wednesday I will go over Jackie’s homes as an adult
Wow. Kakšen imperij precudovito..A o takšnih stvareh ne upamo sanjati..
Merrywood was my fave.
Hammersmith was so cozy, yet so grand! I would just add a beautiful stable in if I were wealthy and that were my home! 🤭
☝🏻I’m Steve’s wife 🤫! I’ve always loved Hammersmiths farm, Merrywood being a close second. Ok I have to correct the pronunciation of the Auchincloss name, the ch is pronounced as a k sound. aa Kuhn Klaas! Look. It. Up.
This always happens when I hear other people say it in a certain way in real life I assume they are right. It seems it is pronounced - “Auck in closs”
What is the country of origin of the Auchincloss name ? Netherlands ? Germany ?
I have spent a weekend here.
My favorite was the first house
I like merrywood estate
Lasada is currently for sale. $55m
❤
You can't beat Newport.
Her Grandfather build 740 Park Ave. She also lived at Park ave.
Money can't buy you love. That's a Beatles' lyric, isn't it ?
Pls do video on Childhood home of princess diana
Excellent idea!!! Coming soon
My late husband and I spent our honeymoon (1995) in Newport and toured Hammersmith. The photos here did not do it justice. Also, I believe Hammersmith was sold to a private individual in the late 90's and is no longer available to be toured.
🌈💝💐
Merrywood Estate.
I like the 1sr one the french chateu like residence elegance and full of light. The second was dull.
The home on the brook
천국에 있을까?
Merrywood is my pick for best in show. However, is it really owned by the Saudi's?
I hope not
Most likely. The Saudis are probably the only ones who can afford it and maintain it as it will need plenty of staff.
You can have all that and life will still throw you a lot of curve balls but what a beautiful way to live . 8:21
All gorgeous but more like a country club or grand hotel than a home.
Well that is a wonderful background for Jackie O.sort of explains how she let it slip when in England on a State visit she was not impressed by the decor of Windsor Castle? This it seems annoyed Queen Elizabeth somewhat, however Jackie mended bridges graciously when in a private meeting with the Queen in her salon..
Jackie appeared to be greatly blessed terrible how tragedy followed her.Wonderful how she rose above it till the end.
John F Kennedy.disappoints with his clandestine extra marital affair with Marilyn Munro. What is it with men liking the slam dunk cheapo anyway?
Looks like Jackie married beneath her socially?
@@bluewren2 She did.
Can’t agree on the “cold and bland” furnishings of Lasata. I think it perfectly compliments the home, fit for a modern king… or queen.
I like the “cold and bland” one the best. THAT is elegance.
The older pics were better. They showed a quiet intellect and a fidelity to a British house interior. It looks like an hotel now…glitz is never admired.
The first home is exceptional. The third home is in a beautiful location. The second home is ruined with terrible interior design.
You said it perfectly!
Boy!! Someone Sure Ruined “Lasada” 😢
So sad to see the interior of Lasata look so hideous.
Never seen Lasada before. You don't get much information about the Bouvier's background anywhere.
That will be in another video! ⚜️❤️
You missed pronounced ‘Auchincloss’.
Is it pronounced "Ouch-in-closs"? That's how I've always said it.
This always happens when I hear other people say it in a certain way in real life I assume they are right. It seems it is pronounced - “Auck in closs”
I was going to make the same comment!😀
@@CulturedElegance Your first sentence needs work! Yikes!!!! It is neither cultured nor elegant.
I hate the sterile decor of the second house. Interior design should be in harmony with the buildings architecture, this isn’t. It’s about the worst design possible for this building. If the current owners just wanted cold white boxes, why didn’t they just buy a home with modern architecture? It shows their lack of confidence, and new money, probably. Jackie would have hated it, too, there is nothing comfortable, home-like or welcoming about it.
Daughter like a mother! Gold diggers!
L' intérieur de la maison du temps des parents de Jackie est magnifiquement meublée , actuellement , elle ne ressemble à rien ! Dommage !
elle fut rachetée par le créateur des magasins TIFFANY !
I know this woman had many tragedies in her life, but she lived a life of luxury and privilege.
I know. She didn't exactly grow up in social housing like immigrants in Europe.
I wish i grew up in that house.
It looks like one would have an amazing childhood there with lots of space.
@latifamoumen5422 oh no no I would take those immigrant homes any day of the weekend than live in those filthy mansions I would rather live in a two roomedhouse han in a house with billion rooms
If I lived in those mansions, I would have committed suicide at age 8
