- A playthrough of Nintendo's 1994 action-adventure game for the Super Nintendo, Super Metroid.
Super Metroid is the third game of the Metroid series, following Metroid on NES ( • Metroid (NES) Playthro... ) and Metroid II: Return of Samus on Game Boy ( • Metroid II: Return of ... ). Metroid Fusion was its direct sequel ( • Metroid Fusion (Game B... ).
Samus Aran, galactic bounty hunter extraordinaire, had succeeded in her mission to eradicate the metroid threat from SR388. She brought the species' sole surviving specimen, a baby, to a laboratory on the Ceres Space Station before taking off toward her next adventure. However, shortly after departing, she is alerted to an emergency at the colony and rushes back.
She arrives to find everyone dead and the lab in ruins. Discovering that the metroid hatchling is still alive, she goes to retrieve it when she's attacked by the space pirate Ridley. He stops just short of killing Samus, but he steals the specimen and sets the station to self-destruct before fleeing. Samus makes it back to her ship just before the station explodes and follows Ridley to the planet Zebes.
Once Samus lands on Zebes, she's entirely on her own. She will ultimately have to confront the space pirates, but before she can do that, she'll need to expand her offensive and defensive capabilities. Beneath the surface of the planet lies a vast network of caverns teeming with untold alien horrors.
Samus is fairly weak at the start of her adventure, but as anyone familiar with the series can tell you, she doesn't stay that way for long. As she explores, she'll find upgrades to her suit and weapons systems that'll help even the playing field.
Large chunks of Super Metroid's world are gated by obstacles that can only be surmounted once Samus has found and augmented her suit with the appropriate enhancements. As her capabilities increase, more areas become accessible, and eventually she'll become powerful enough to take on the head of the space pirates, Mother Brain.
Super Metroid greatly expands on the core gameplay of the first two games. The game map is huge, and every bit of it has been meticulously designed to promote experimentation. Once you've found the first couple of upgrades, you're free to do pretty much whatever you like. It signposts just enough to provide you a general sense of purpose, but the gameplay is largely non-linear. For as many times as I've played it over the years, I don't think I've ever taken the same exact path twice through the game.
The sheer number of secrets here is mind-boggling, and Samus's new abilities (especially the power bomb and the X-ray viewer) and the new auto-mapping feature go a long way in making the game feel accessible without spoiling the fun of discovery. Pretty much every chamber has something useful to be found, whether it be a shortcut through a seemingly solid wall or an energy tank to extend your life gauge. There's a lot of content here, and none of it is filler.
But in my mind, what really propels Super Metroid to stardom is its presentation. The game is drenched in atmosphere. Each area, no matter the theme, looks and feels worn, and the crumbling artifacts that litter the ground speak volumes about the long-dead Chozo civilization that once thrived on Zebes.
The way the aliens feel like organic extensions of their environments does wonders for immersion, and the soundtrack is among the best I've heard in a game, nailing the perfect ambient tone again and again. (And those screams!) More than anything, the cinematic visual and sound design's way of evoking feelings of dread and isolation reminds me of the movie Alien. I don't think there's any higher praise I could give a horror game's presentation than that.
It's not a particularly long game, but it is so packed with secrets that you could play for months and still not find everything on your own.
The only problem I've ever had with the game is its controls. They're awkward and there aren't any button configuration that are comfortable in all circumstances - there are many situations where you'll have to adopt a claw grip on the controller so that you can hit three or four buttons at the same time. It's obnoxious, and for years, it really put me off of the game. (Thankfully they learned their lessons with this one - Zero Mission and Fusion's controls are much better.) I got over it eventually, but it's unfortunate that such a flaw found its way into an otherwise brilliant game.
If there are any Nintendo fans out there that haven't yet played Super Metroid, do yourself a favor and give it a spin. The game is just as good as everyone says it is.

You know what's beautiful about this? The creators treated the source material as almost a sacred piece of historical fact. They had so much reverence and nastalgia for the original game, it bleeds through the pours of this game. I wish movie makers did the same for our beloved movie franchises. They could learn a lot from these developers

Metroid 2 on the GB felt like you literally were isolated, and with the handheld games environment, and maze like structure, you definitely knew, it was you, and you alone against a ton of Metroids. No one was going to help you, and no one was even going to come and help you.
Dead space was a metriod clone.

This game doesn't need any introduction. Everyone knows this title. The one that made the Metroid series a household name among hardcore Nintendo fans, and the one that set the gold standard for the Action and Exploration in the Adventure genre. An all time classic.

While this game is obviously superior in terms of graphics and gameplay this game wouldn't be what it is without the original on the NES. The original Metroid is what made the series a household name with 2.73 million units sold.

One of the best games ever made! I foolishly didn't play it until one year ago, beat it twice, and now I need to go for a third after watching this. It's truly a real masterpiece!

Current world record is 40 minutes 45 seconds. Pretty intense.

One of my all-time favorites for sure. I still remember my emotions when I discovered the stage where you put the jewels on the alien statue and it sinks giving you a new stage and when the larva alien helps me at the last boss ❤️

the level of completion is insane. This would have taken me atleast 10+ hours of running around, trying to figure things out. Thank you youtube for having someone else do it for me ;)
True but second play would take 4hrs.
My first go around took me more than 4 hours but after playing it and knowing where everything is I was able to complete it the second time in 2 hours 15 minutes.
One of the best SNES games of all time
This game still gives me chills in places. It's just phenomenal. I wish Fusion hadn't been hobbled by being on the GBA. The graphics on that system were great, but I really think the sound quality wasn't as good as the SNES.

It really wasnt, but it was still a solid game. The linear gameplay was also a little not-metroid but it still worked. Dread brought the entire Genre back though. It was amazing. Like Super Metroid on steroids and the horror aspect was expertly done.

Wow, I didn't realize just HOW much they carried over into Metroid Prime. Just bought an old copy for Gamecube a week ago for nostalgia. And the game is way ahead of it's time.
When I discovered the existence of Super Metroid, the first thing I said was "I have to play this". During my first playtrough, I didn't know where to go and I died like 300 times, so I discarded everything and stopped playing it. After a long time, during the period of the first lockdown, I was really bored because I didn't want to hear for 3 hours my science teacher, so I said to myself "It's finally time to beat Super Metroid ", and I managed to finish it with 97% without Game Over a single time, all in one try, and since that day, Super Metroid has become my favorite game of all time. So yeah ... I finished Super Metroid during school.

Nice to see a full run of this game where the player remembers to take the detour during the final escape and release the friendly creatures so they can escape the planet too.
Bought this game when I bought my SNES that came with Link to the Past. I played this again recently and despite being 25+ years old the battery backup still works.
Original hardware is the best way to experience.

This game has quickly risen to probably my top 3 video games ever. I never played this growing up so it’s a brand new experience. It’s fun on the switch but I’m even considering buying a cartridge for my SNES now as well to always have the physical copy.

There is only one word that I can describe this game simply amazing for its awesome game play and graphics
The first time I got to play this I was about 10. My mom and I were visiting a long lost relative she discovered, and they brought us over to their friend's house for dinner. This old guy had a snes in his front closed in patio, and this was one of the games. I thought the cover looked cool. I popped this in and played while waiting for dinner. The dude's wife cooked us a nice Italian dinner, I was a kid so I thought it would be funny when I got my plate to say "it looks deeeeeeee-gusting". The dude got super pissed and his wife was super offended. I was just being silly and thought nothing of it, but they were so upset, like irrationally upset considering how young I was. That memory is forever linked to the first time I played Super Metroid.
Lmao, I can't really say I blame them for being offended. My parents would've beat my ass had I ever pulled a stunt like that, not that I ever would have. They taught me better than that.
Dat Crocomire thumbnail though. Yeah, there really isn't much more to say... this game has it all. Controls can be a bit awkward at times, and this issue was fixed in _Fusion_ and _Zero Mission_ . But outside of that, one of the most fun and polished game experiences ever crafted, and also its importance cannot be overstated. We wouldn't have _Symphony of the Night_ without it, and the myriad of the "Metroidvania" style games today.
Every area in the game was intense. I personally love the Norfair area the most and loved it when did a remix of that song in Prime 2.
I have memories of playing Super Metroid when I was roughly 15, when I bought it, alongside Kirby 64, on the Wii Virtual Console. I don't think I beat it until I reached college, though. Good times, and well-deserving of its iconic status. It made so many improvements from Metroid and Metroid 2, without holding your hand, and for its time, its aesthetic was very well done... still is, actually.
Now we need Metroid Fusion, other than that, this game is a damn classic

one of the best games ever! Friend introduced me to the randomizer (with LTTP) of it and it made it much more unpredictable and fun!
I played this so much the summer it came out that everyone thought I was at summer camp. I couldn't get away from it.
Have only gone through this masterpiece once, back when it first came out. Since then I have left the game alone, it's box still in pristine condition from the day I bought it till the day I pull it back out and try it again. Even had the Nintendo made guidebook for it, but a flood wiped it, along with a lot of Nintendo Power, some Sega Visions, EGM's, and Gamepro's out. Had them stored in a shed outside my home, and in 6 hours, 20 inches of rain came down, pretty much destroying them all as water had gotten inside.

I got this game when it came out. Been a metroid fan since day one! Just played through this again and even though it has been a few years i still beat it with my in game time of one hour seven minutes. Not too shabby if i do say so myself. No speedrun legend but fast enough to get the best ending

This game DEFINITELY deserves to be put into a Live Sci-fi Horror/Action Netflix Series or movie which really does bring me back awesome memories as a kid when one of my best friends would bring his Super Metroid game as i had my SNES console with other games i use to own and we would be taking turns trying to beat the whole game after school. 😁😃😅👍❤️🌹

I love watching the games that took me months to beat as a child being done in one sitting.
In took 7 years to happen, and you know what? The more things change, the more they stay the same. Super Metroid for the SNES is a massively enhanced, expanded, and souped-up remake/sequel to Nintendo’s 1987 maze/side-shooting masterpiece that captivated audience on all corners of the galaxy.

I remember finishing this metroid with 100% of the secrets found ... in that time I tried to do that again and could not, got 99% so I just forget that 1% XD
Preparing for Metroid Dread, I see. So am I and and many other. I was never able to play Super Metroid until I got Nintendo Switch Online. Now, I understand why the game gets so much praise. It's not just about combat. It's also about exploration. I also like how the game includes references to the NES original and expands from there by adding newer material.
I’m gonna go on a limb and say Super Metroid is the greatest SNES game. Greater than Zelda ALTTP, Mario World, Chrono Trigger, or Donkey Kong Country. It just has too much going for it to be topped. It’s too amazing and beautiful to be beaten.

I found this game about 4yrs after it came out. I was sick with the flu and was laid up at my folks and my sisters snes was still there. No one saw me for a week until I beat it. No internet, so i figured it out myself. That damn Draygon water monster still gives me nightmares.

What a timeless masterpiece! Super Metroid is one of the best sidescrolling action-adventures ever, and absolute worth to play. It has great music and the atmosphere is still amazing.
It’s kind of sad when the Metroid dies but you get the rainbow gun and it’s all worthwhile.
One of the best games around, and one of the rare darker Nintendo games. This game is definitely the best Metroid, a huge improvement over the NES game, being SNES. I beat it twice, and I got the best ending, 100%. Wonderful masterpiece.
I’m in the minority. But I prefer Fusion over this. I was never used to this game.

Got my son a Nintendo switch for his birthday. Part of the reason he got it was so I can play some of these Metroid games.
This game and Metroid Fusion along with the Metroid 1 Remake, Metroid Zero Mission have the best sprites and graphics.
I remember getting this from Toys 'R' Us on my birthday back in '94. Me and my friend would speedrun this game throughout the whole year & beyond, trying to beat each other's times for 100% completion. Those were some good gaming days. I just don't get the excitement for new games today than I did for this game. Also, the soundtrack and SFX are phenomenal and showcased the best that the Super NES could accomplish. This game is the definition of a classic.

while glued to the wall, press to the opposite side (you will see samus' leg in a position as if she were going to kick the wall to jump) and then press the jump button

Boy the nostalgia. Took me a month to beat as a kid. My heart dropped with the Ridley first encounter because I honestly forgot about it, AND THAT TIMER 😂😂. Mother brain took me a while. I'm surprised u did this in 3 hours thou. Probably gonna watch both game cube walkthroughs next

I spent all of 94 playing FFVI on Super Nintendo and being a 4th grader, looks like I need to make some time for Metroid one day 😃
I would've loved to see a remake on DS, like Zero Mission for the GBA. Enhance graphics and audio, put the map on the lower screen and include touch-based toggles for the missiles/super missiles, powerbombs, etc. (Heck, maybe even add FMV cutscenes for the intro and outro)

One bite from an inland taipan can kill one hundred people. One blast from samus aran's gun can kill two hundred inland taipans. Both Death and Chuck Norris once had a near samus experience.

Aside from this game being a big gem, I can honestly say that this was the first game that I have ever played at 16 when it was released, that if you had full health, killing the enemies, wouldn't drop more energy unless you were under 99 :D
