How did my Social Security number get on the dark web?
There are a number of ways that your Social Security number could have been stolen and put on the dark web. For example, your Social Security number could have been stolen in a data breach at a company where you do business, or it could have been stolen from your computer or mobile device if you were infected with malware.
What should I do if my Social Security number is on the dark web?
Consider freezing your credit reports. This will prevent anyone from opening new accounts in your name, even if they have your Social Security number.
Report the theft of your Social Security number to the Social Security Administration. You can do this online at ssa.gov/identitytheft.

Thanks for sharing. We are in scary times. I had my credit card number stolen and my bank alerted me after they already made one transaction. I also have my accounts frozen. It's sad that we have to take these extra steps but it helps us not to be a victim. I wish you well.

Had mine show up on Dark Web too. What irritates me is it came from a phone company that was hacked and they never told me it happened and I also do not remember giving them my SSN. They did what some doctors office do... they go find it on their own.
That's so unfortunate. It's so common nowadays that it's difficult to determine how your data gets leaked. I've locked everything down now.

Aww damn..more for me to do..AND what happened to that rule ..your ssi # is not to be used for identification..and every dang utility or phone company..bank has it?
Yes, unfortunately they do have it. I just applied for a new bank account and it was declined due to my freeze. It goes to show that they don't use your SSN for identification, but they do use it for verification. I got email from my credit card, notify me, that my social was in the dark Webb I have a concern.
Consider putting a lock or a freeze on your account to protect yourself.
Have you had any issues since? For utilities I'm guessing you froze NCTUE?
No, no issues since. Yes, I used NCTUE for my utilities security freeze. I also submitted employment data and a bank security freeze.
