  • In our latest CZcams video, Dan goes hands-on with the new 12.9-inch 2021 M1 iPad Pro and compares it to the 2020 12.9-inch ‌iPad Pro‌ to answer the question "Is it worth upgrading?"
    Compared to the 2020 ‌iPad Pro‌, the 2021 model features an upgraded ‌M1‌ chip that's faster, a new Center Stage option powered by an Ultra Wide front-facing camera, a much improved mini-LED display that has much better contrast and blacker blacks, and a Thunderbolt port that improves connectivity with peripherals.

    Just got mine in the mail today. czcams.com/users/postUgkxhcEDB3r-OJ3_X5hQzr7k1ZofTQy1ao_U The corners of the box was a little smashed but I think that’s more of the shipping’s fault. iPad was in perfect condition though. I ordered the yellow one thinking it was going to be a bright vibrant color. Instead I looks like more of a Gold color. I personally prefer the gold look. Definitely not disappointed but just a heads up to the ones expecting a brighter cream of yellow.

    I can save you a lot of time. Almost no one needs to upgrade from last year’s device to this year’s device, no matter what device we’re talking about. You might want to, but almost no one needs to.

      Here’s how I see it. Have an iPad from 2017 or before? Upgrade. Have an iPad from 2018 or later? Wait until WWDC 2021. Then decide from there. Likely it won’t be worth an upgrade. I upgraded from the 9.7 iPad Pro and it’s worth it

    Would it be worth it to get a 2020 version for about $100 less? I'm interested in the 120Hz Display for Apple Pencil use. I'm mainly looking to take notes, blueprints and documents on it as well as some media streaming on the side. So not really in need of the performance boost on the 2021. Or should I just save money and get an iPad 9?

    I have actually been totally fine with not only keeping my 2020 12.9 model till at leasst next year, but I have also found myself very happy with my $20 generic bluetooth mobile keyboard and $99 smart-folio combo versus a magic keyboard. As an artist, I appreciate being able to position the keyboard relative to how I am painting in ProCreate and then just move it back when I want to be in "laptop" mode, and this keyboard actually has an escape button as well as the button to drop to the desktop. I have more and more Apple products, but I am still trying to be a realist when it comes to what I buy.

      Also! How is the screen size for your 12.9 tablet! I'm looking into getting one of the 2020s but not sure on which. (: I'm hoping to primarily use it for art and possibly basic video editing.

    I had a 2017 iPad Pro 10.5” (or maybe it was a 2018, I can’t remember for sure) and I upgraded about a year ago to the 2020 iPad Pro 12.9” because the battery life on my old iPad was almost nonexistent. I had to have it plugged in at all times in order to use it, which is very impractical for basically anyone but especially because I use my iPad for practically everything I do - for my job, my business I’m working on starting up, for entertainment, etc. I’m really happy with my new iPad! It has a much better display & the difference in the size of the screen compared to the 10.5” is ahhhmazing! As far as upgrading from the 2020 to the 2021...to each their own, but for me personally - I don’t see a need to when there isn’t much of a difference between the two generations & my current 2020 iPad works perfectly! I’ll upgrade when mine shits out.

    Thank you very much for this. I bought my very first ipad (the ipad pro 12.9 inch 1tb 2020) just 3 months ago, I had no idea there was a new one on the horizon, otherwise I'd have waited.
    I use it for general things, but also for on the go gaming, music production and some video production.
    I feel a bit gutted of course, as that 16gb of ram and faster processing of the 2021 model could possibly/theoretically come in very handy with all the tracks and effects I use in a mix for music production and with the vfx in video production, and of course gaming..
    ..though I understand apps are limited to how much memory they can use, but that could quite possibly change in a future update, which we could possibly find out about at the upcoming developers conference..

There are niche users out there who are doing amazing stuff with the iPad Pro, but the reality is, this is not a mass consumer product anymore.

Better yet ability to run OSX on a iPad that would get me to upgrade. With Apple new SoC they have started making one basic computer with difference types of bodies. M1 for a mini computer, desktop, laptop, tablet, add a received and a phone or watch. One chip lots of shapes depending on your preference.

    Went for the 11” M1 iPad Pro as it’s cheaper and I prefer the smaller size. Kinda wish it had the mini LED display, but the 120Hz 600 nit 11” display is already a solid leap over the 2019 iPad Air 3, and Apple just makes excellent LCDs.
    At WWDC this year, while I’m already pretty happy with how iPadOS 14 runs, I do hope they at least add the ability to use all of the external display and to use it for extra screen space for more apps - opposed to just a blown up version of what is already showing on your iPad.

    • @randommiker
      @randommiker Před 2 lety +1

      Apple doesn't make their own display's for the iPad. Samsung makes them. Also, you are right about the multi-screen support but that requires a GPU that's strong enough while also not sacrificing too much battery life. The A12-M1 can do it without breaking a sweat but that's a small margin of iPad users and even smaller margin of those who would actually use the feature. That's not mentioning the fact developers would need to spending money/time optimizing for such a feature only to find out it didn't return enough profit to justify it.

  • @Streamlined955
    @Streamlined955 Před 3 lety +69

    Excellent review. The iPads have always been snappy and the A12X (even A10X) are still plenty strong. I have an 11” M1 iPad Pro and the only caveat I would add is that the battery life is much improved on the new iPad. I’m happy I upgraded but I had the 10.5” iPad Pro so the new form factor with TouchID and new Apple Pencil is mostly what I love.

    • @JuanVinton
      @JuanVinton Před 3 lety +8

      Same. I had the 10.5 and it's still performs relatively well. But the battery has dwindled over the years and this upgrade makes sense. My hope is that the M1 will just keep it snappy 5 years down the road.

    • @randommiker
      @randommiker Před 2 lety

      @@JuanVinton , the A10-A12X are already overkill for most, if not all applications in the Apple Store so the M1 is definitely beyond overkill when its comes to potential "Pro" use scenarios. Apple falls short for developing native applications to actually justify the silicons so this why Im confused to why they even made a "Pro" version of an iPad in reference true alternative professional tablets.

  • @AndyMillerPhotoUK
    @AndyMillerPhotoUK Před 2 lety +3

    Just bought the 2TB 12.9 WiFi+Cellular 2021 iPad Pro - Upgrading from the 1 TB 2020 version. Like others who own the top spec previous version I had my doubts - but went to see it in the store and so here we are.
    WHY - T4 connectivity, Bigger SSD and XDR screen.
    I shoot using Hasselblad and NIkon cameras - so being able to use the 12.9 screen and Phocus 2 is a big help in the field. Having a "brighter Screen" is a bonus.
    The 2TB -vs- 1TB is another safety step - I copy selected shots and vids from my camera onto the iPadPro so the additional space is a huge help.
    None of my devices have T4 - but many do have T3 so having T -vs- USB-C is a big help.
    I have a pair of XDR pro screens and like the quality and brightness of their output -- here is hoping the 2021 iPadPro display is at least as good.
    I will find out in 1-2 days when it is delivered and I can road test it -- assuming we actually have a bright sunny day anytime soon, rather than the dark, grey, rain....
    The magic keyboard - typically useless for me. I place mine in a The Joy Factory MagConnect Universal Tablet Module, which sticks on the back, and I via various clamp solutions I fit it to the inside of a safari vehicle, on a vessel or to a tripod. When shooting in Africa the iPad lives in a protective case as well - keeps the dust out and reduces impacts.
    I avoided the very miserly Apple trade in option for my 2020 iPad. I am sure to be able to get more than £620 if I sell my 2020 locally or gain Family credit if I pass it on. As I did the 2018 and other versions -- its too big !!! Or I can simply use it as a another display/touchscreen in my house.
    I travel with both the iPadPro AND a MacBookPro - My 2019 16" i9 MBP with the 5600M GPU and 8TB SSD works great at home and on the road. I have doubts that the new 2021/22 version will be a big leap up -- but we will see.

    The 2021 11" M1 ipad pro is just a super polished device. For once in my life, I can finally hold a device and say "Damn! This is perfect." I added an external portable DAC amp with IEMs, Stylus, and a 100 W charger and it is everything I ever wished for and more. Once I add my SSD to the setup, it's everything I'll ever need. It's a good time to be alive.

    I bought pretty much every iPad since the first one. It’s always minimal to last years. You don’t really notice the bump until the iPad is 2 to 3 years old. But realistically. 1. Does it matter at that point. And 2.are we at a point where the average user just isn’t going to see the performance gain. But yes,the new FaceTime camera is amazing though.

    Great review. I have the iPad Pro 11" 2020 and I have been tossing around the idea of upgrading to the new 12.9". I edit photos and do a lot of drawing on my iPad's, not to mention nearly all of my lecture's and classroom demonstrations on my iPad. I just wish Apple would create Logic Pro for their Pro iPads. Still undecided on the upgrade...

    • @randommiker
      @randommiker Před 2 lety +1

      Logic Pro could easily transfer over to the iPad M1 because its already programmed for the M1 series but then that's technically making the iPad Pro a Macbook Pro with touchscreen. Apple would be shooting themselves in the foot.

    My bro finished his university years and pass me his ipad pro 12.9 2018. I was wondering if i could get a new ipad 2021 with my current ipad for trade-in to save few hundred bucks. My ipad pro 12.9 is 256gb and it is in great condition. Literally pnly few hairline scratches on the logo surface. A tiny spot of color fading around the camera lenses.
    Does anyone get their new ipad from apple store with trade-in device? How much did you get from your trade-in device? Apple give me 660 cad instant credit for trade-in device but they say the final amount will be announced once they receive and finish the inspection of my ipad.

    So one thing I noticed that you didn’t touch on is the real difference in reflectivity of the display. Look back at your footage. You can clearly see the background in the reflection of the 2020 iPad and not at all in the M1. Just saying. This is the first that I have seen this and would be worth the upgrade for me.

    Can someone help me lol. Is it better for me to get the 2020 12.9 inch or the 2021 11 inch? I will mainly use it for school purposes such as notetaking and digital drawing or animation. I'm afraid the 12.9 will be too big for me but all my devices such as handphone has been much larger than average (it's currently 7 inch) so I guess you can say I do like large screens, but also afraid it'll be too incompatible and for the 11 inch the m1 chip and future updates is really tempting though it may be a bit cramped(?)

    Good review. Exactly what I suspected with where iPadOS is and just how powerful the 2020 already was, as you pointed out. My only question is, what does the 2020 do performance wise the 2018 didn’t? They have the exact same performance. The 2018 has the same overall design less the rear camera module as the 2020/2021 iPad Pros, Apple Pencil 2 and Magic Keyboard compatibility and loads of untapped performance still. I think the M1 iPad Pro only makes sense coming from a 2018/2020 model if you do heavy 4K video editing. Otherwise, I just don’t see the case for it.
