Indian fishermen have overfished around Indian maritime boundaries and hence venture into the Sri Lankan waters and get harassed/arrested, claiming ownership of Katchatheevu will increase indias maritime border towards Sri Lanka so that Indian/especially Tamil Nadu fishermen can fish around it. This is done to get votes of fishermen families
Sri Lankan fishermen from Jaffna, Mullaitivu, and Mannar (who are from the Sri Lankan Tamil Community who speak the Tamil language) districts are agitated by the alleged recurring illegal fishing by their counterparts from India (who are mainly from Tamil Nadu who speak the Tamil language). If Indian fisherman want to fish beyond the India International border, there is no need to cross over to Sri Lanka's territory (country's territory), instead there is plenty of International waters that is south of India that they can fish with no issues maintaining peace with Sri Lanka. Why does India has to disrupt peace with all it's neighbouring countries, and now the latest is with Sri Lanka at a time Sri Lankan-Indian diplomacy has improved. According to a recent news article as of 2024 India still remains unresponsive to the request by Sri Lanka to allow an innocent passage through the Indian Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) for its fishermen to enter the Arabian Sea. Sri Lanka had made this request when President Ranil Wickremesinghe visited India in 2023. The Indian route will help Lankan fishermen cut down the total distance by 400 nautical miles. Currently, they have to take a longer route via Negombo, Dikovita, Beruwala and Matara (areas in Sri Lanka) around the Maldives. Currently, Sri Lankan fishermen get detained by the Indian Coast Guard when they unlawfully enter Indian waters on their way to the Arabian Sea for fishing activities.
There is strict anti poaching laws in Indian waters. Meanwhile it's a lucrative business of poaching sea cucumbers in Sri Lanka and shipping it by smugglers to Chinese market.

Giving away a miniscule island which doesn't even have water, decades ago when deplomacy was better between the countries- is oh so terrible. After the start of the war in 1983 in Sri Lanka, fish exports by South Indian fishermen have increased by 51%. Sri Lankan Tamil fishermen were unable to go into the sea . So Tamil Nadu fishermen caught these fishes . Tamil Nadu fishermen export 2 million pounds worth fishes per a day after 1983 war in Sri Lanka.
Recently, India gave a loan of 4 billion dollars to Sri Lanka government. This loan carries interest. And from this money Sri Lanka can buy goods only from India.
Narrow netting has been banned in Sri Lanka as it destroys fish stocks ( bottom drawlers )
Many years back TN fishermen caught all the fishes using narrow nets and destroyed all fish resources around Katchchai Thivu.
Now Sri Lankan fishermen do not go to Kachai Thivu Island because there are no fish around Katchai Thivu Island ) .

Why are you talking about Chinese aggression when the actual issue at hand was land in West Bengal being given to Bangladesh- that too fertile land rich in biodiversity and water unlike the one tiny waterless Kachetheevu. South Indian Raja got it from the British to rule for few decades as a custodian. When the Briish leaves, they gave it back to Sri Lanka. It's thousands of years ownership vs 50-100 year custodianship. A temporary caretaker of a plantation won't have rights to the land.

There are ancient documents confirming that Katchithivu came under the See of the Bishop of Jaffna and this is was under papal authority...
