Hidenori Shoji - Yakuza Composer Appreciation

- Hidenori Shoji is a musical composer for the Yakuza franchise. Although, it would be more appropriate to say THE composer, being essentially the main composer for almost every single game in the entire franchise. Especially in 0 where he went sicko mode.
Here is the lovely man's Twitter:

Playlist of all Yakuza songs composed by Hidenori Shoji:

This man literally composed over 200 songs for the games like bruh how - Hry
I wish I could say otherwise, but as always I am not associated with Hidenori Shoji in any way. But yeah finally did a video on him about the 200+ songs he has made for the series. I would've included every single song he made for Yakuza 0 as he was clearly on several performance enhancing drugs for that entire OST but then it would've been WAY too long for a video.
This is his twitter give the man a follow if you can:

Thanks to everyone for watching and thanks to anyone that watched the whole series it means a lot :)
Persona composer appreciation when?

Kiryu cutting onions while fly plays was climatic as fuck
Hi again
So was two dragons beat drop syncing with the phone
There can really only be one composer that stands out the most when it comes to Yakuza and its definitely gotta be Hidenori Shoji. I mean you practically see that guy's name in every Yakuza game.
Especially if you scroll through the Yakuza 0 OST and you see his name like 40 times haha
@@SnowiestAngeman the Kojima of Yakuza games.

I think Fukuyama is the Dreamer
You know what they say “a jack of all trades is a master-“, ah screw it why don’t we make our own saying for him “this jack of all trades is a master of all, which plays good music while we get kicked in the balls”
The sheer amount of iconic tracks all composed by the same man
A legend, there's no way better than describing him as such
a lyrical miracle spiritual individual
What an absolute GOAT. Man literally made all of the best non-karaoke songs, what an emperor.

Yakuza 0 was probably Shoji's best work, the boss themes of this game like With Vengeance, Two Dragons, Archnemesis, Receive You tech trance arrangement and Receive You the Madtype are unforgettable
.......and of course,
*SHINIEEEE BOKEEEEEI !!*

Oath brother. I actually only went through the effort to get the Dragon style in 0 so I could hear the battle theme haha
@@SnowiestAngeman I don't even play Yakuza but I can feel the satisfaction after all the effort you put into unlocking Dragon style, kudos to you
He is responsible for the majority of my favorite songs from this series. I cannot thank him enough for Pledge of Demon, Two Dragons, Outlaw's Lullaby, & Ideal For Violence.
Two dragons slaps hard. Yakuza 0's bgm had no business slapping as much as it did
We now move on to the main event. The one and only Hidenori Shoji. Glad you finally made a video on the GOAT himself. Please make a bonus video in this series on some of the underrated or one and done composers, like Keisuke Itou!
Would love to see love for Hideki Sakamoto, who worked on 2, 3 and Kenzan. His music is great
He also worked on F-Zero GX, which also had a kickass soundtrack. You can definitely see the parallels when you hear songs like Crash Addiction.
I hope if they ever do another F-Zero game they get Shoji in on it that would be awesome
Bloodstained Philosophy gotta be not only my favorite Yakuza track, but one of my favorite music pieces in media. Never heard a track more hype than it
It's time to talk about the man, the myth, the legend, Makotch.
Receive You is a musical magnum opus
His music is some of the best in the yakuza series
Baile Con La Mariposa - I was amazed to hear this for the first time in Kenzan; I wasn't expecting Spanish guitar in that duel.
It's especially surprising given that the music is all very Feudal Japan sounding with a Yakuza twist and yet the Spanish guitar fits perfectly
He's done everything here! Including whatever that one-on-one crazy fight is in Judgment. Once again, can't wait to figure out how we get to THAT point.
It is a rather exciting boss fight. Actually pretty hard considering that it's actually a fair ways away from the ending
This man's such a legend
Also Bishop-Violet-Velveteen (the main game mix, not demo mix) plays for most of the non-random fights with the Triads
My personal favorites from the man himself are (in no particular order):
- Pledge of Demon
- Speed Star
- Geist Obscuration
- 36 Strings Nocturne (simply gorgeous!)
- Arrow of Indra
- t u s k
- REIGN (how couldn't this track be on the video!? it's GORGEOUS!)
- Two Dragons
- Funk Goes On (all versions)
Man. I have played through all the game's in the series except the original y1 & y2 (I played the kiwami versions) but it just goes to show iconic his music is. Even song's like the funk goes on has that sense of nostalgia for me despite only hearing the kiwami version. Kudos to him for sticking it out this long.
Receive and bite you is the apex of majima themes. It is THE majima theme I will die on this hill.
Don't worry there's a lot of people who will agree with you haha
Талантливый композитор, который ещё и недооцененный. Его стиль музыки вдохновляет.
respect for avoiding spoilers i mean ive played all the games but still huge respect
Admit it , his best soundtracks are Outlaw lullaby , Pledge of the demon ,Two Dragons , speed star , funk goes on , recieve and bite you , bloodstained philosophy and a scattered moment
Funk goes on? That's easily one of the best. Especially the ps2 version
It's fly receive and bite you funk goes on and outlaws lullaby and hailstorm
@@temmegaming1393 there are a lot of good musics hidenori shoji made but I can't keep editing it every second
Don't forget One eyed Dancer. That track is the bomb.
His best songs are actually: all of them.
Except it's *actually* Receive You Tech Trance Arrange
Sad song is so damn good and most Yakuza fans don't even know it exists because it's hidden in Ishin
also this man is an absolute legend just one of these games tracks alone makes him a legend let alone doing it for over a decade.
For Faith is my favorite of his tracks. Just gives me a badass and chill vibe, it made that entire fight in Yakuza 4 IMO. He has composed so many good tracks that have inspired me to learn and start playing music.
Shoji in the name=goated ost
RGG Studio: We need a banger final boss theme
Shoji-sama: Now this looks like a job for me
Man, this gives me an Idea, since you have a series about RGG composers I should do one for specific Sonic The Hedgehog composers.
For as much praise as Sonic music gets there A LOT of fans don't know who composed what in the series and there is so much.
This series its such a great idea.
"Kept you waiting huh?" Yes, you're goddamn right
I wonder how many people will get this Yakuza reference
Isn’t that Snake’s line?
I’VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS!
Btw is it safe to say he composed all the mainline Yakuza final boss themes?
Yeah he's done a majority of them but in terms of mainline he didn't compose 1/Kiwami 1, 5 and 6
Hidenori “atleast 5 of your favourite songs are made by me” Shoji
4:49 "sad sword"
*pulls out gun*
Hidenori is easily one of the GOATS in RGG Studios
He is on another level. No other composer for the series can be compared to him
The main man himself. He composed my favorite piece of music ever (For Faith). For that he has my utmost respect.
A legend among the yakuza team. Thanks Hidenori Shoji.
I've liked Hidenori Shoji's music since I played Super Monkey Ball as a kid. I'm always excited when I hear a song that has that old Monkey Ball sound like Speed Star or Enormous Gun Salutes.
He also was the composer of my favorite game ever, F-Zero GX. This man is a legend.
He also composed the car select song for Sega Touring Car Championship, and I believe some songs for Fighting Vipers 2
Finally someone who knows that Bruise from Yakuza 3 is actually a good song
also Kiryu pulling out the Phone as Two Dragons playing is somewhat badass as fuck
We all been waiting for this ever since the first composer appreciation video. But let’s give a hand to everyone!
Damn. Just...damn. So glad I decided to witness this Yakuza-music Mecca pilgrimage. And props to the player for maintaining continuity between the Y2 and K2 Kiryu stutters lol. And oh man, Hidenori Shoji. Apparently he's so easy to work with and that shows in the last three songs in the Judge Eyes Disc 2's ending- Darkness, 幻影 and Penumbra. He carries the musical "Arab"-y themes introduced by Yuri Fukuda in the first two tracks and puts them to good use in Penumbra. And honestly, idk shit about music-making but I think that's cool. And the Penumbra video footage you used may be a teeny bit spoilery but idk. Love the the amount of time you spent on showcasing it tho. Great series, man. 👏👏👏
(fite me, dead souls' soundtrack is godly. ever hear "Long Battle", bish? jk)
"Yakuza-music Mecca pilgrimage" hahaha. But with the Penumbra bit I thought to condition viewers who haven't played or at least finished Judgment into thinking "okay he isn't showing final bosses" and then when they see Kuroiwa they would assume that he isn't the final boss or the mole or anything because "why would he show it?"
@@SnowiestAngeman hmm. fair enough tbh.
Used to jam to funk goes on while playing Yakuza 1 on PCSX2, ran well most of the time.
That was around October. Been a Yakuza fan since then and am currently playing 7 and replaying 0, doing more than just the story.
You listen to Hidenori Shoji's songs and you end up picturing this cool looking Japanese rockstar dude. Then you see a picture of him and he looks like a fucking gremlin. And I love it. The man is an amazing musician
I was waiting for the ultimate composer to be showcased, thank god im not the only one who thinks so highly of him
Yeah ma boi
Bro he did Receive you the prototype, And Bite You, Pledge of Demon and Two Dragons
The guy earned his place as a legend in the Yakuza series
Holy shit this guy wrote some of my fav yakuza tracks, his catalog is huge big respect
I wanted this video! Thanks for up!
love to see people learning about all these awesome composers :)
Yeah this pretty much explains why this is the only name I immediately recognised in your composer showcase.
Music really makes me wanna try Kurohyou but I told myself I'd get Ishin first as it goes digital sale regularly..
Can't wait what this wizard has up his sleeve for Lost Judgment!
Finally, Ive been waiting
Yes finally been waiting for you to make a video about one of the Legendary composers
that transition from pledge of demon to two dragons is amazing
now, for the main event!
The absolute legend!! Thank you for making this series, definitely learnt a lot about each composer and just about how much talent there is within the series🙌
I don't know who did the music for Yakuza, but it is some of the tightest soundtrack music I've ever heard.
Even the repetition in substory music (once your about 60% in to any Yakuza I start noticing the repeats), not thats a bad thing, I like it becuase it give the emotion of the scene, some of the weirder ones where the joke doesn't quite land in English, you know it's a joke becuase it playing the 'happy friends song', you also have sad and wistful
How this man can be so godlike, I can't believe it.
I still remember renting yakuza on ps2 at blockbuster. Every other game i had in mind was rented out, but there sat a single copy of yakuza. Decided to give it a shot so that i would not go home empty-handed. Fan for life now!
Based Blockbuster.
I have been waiting for this video for a long time. And finally the ONE and ONLY finally gets his video. Thank you for all these amazing videos. I think that these bring a lot of awareness of how good all these composers really are.
Glad you like them :) this might be the last for a while but I do hope to do more
A Scattered Moment is godly, both versions go so hard
been waiting indeed
Shoutouts to all the amazing work Shoji's also done for the first two Super Monkey Ball games and F-Zero GX
Bishop-Violet plays during some if not all Triad fights, only one I can think of from the top of my head is the first Triad encounter.
I see I thought that's where it would've played but I couldn't remember because last time I played the game was with the music muted for recording haha
The legend himself
That guy just made the most epic boss themes in history
This guy's done most of my favorite random battle themes and final boss themes, what a legend!
What a legendary composer, love you Hidenori
THE GOAT 🐐
Oh yes, he composed 'Change myself' too.
The man, the myth, the legend
5:15 That transition though holy fuck.
I was shown that scene were kiru is going through the tunnel when Kuze shows uo on a motorcycle completely out of context and that scene alone paired with the music during it got me into the entire series
One of my favorite composers from the industry. Sadly he isn't as nearly appreciated as some others, but he surely deserves more recognition for his work. Thanks for this video.
The legend
Some of my favorites of his (a lot of them are in this video but 2 of them)
1. Ogre has Returned(Yakuza 3)
2. Smile Venomously(Yakuza 4)
He also has done some work on the F-Zero GX game for the Gamecube (my all time favorite racing game Paper Engine being my all time favorite)
He's up there with Yoko Shimomura as my all time favorite VGM composers
Hell yeah Yoko Shimomura is a good choice for a favourite composer
These have all been super fun not really knowing much about the staff but being really into the series. Learning that Shoji may be my favorite Japanese composer right after Akira Yamaoka (guy behind Silent Hill's music). Did he do all of the final boss songs, mainly wondering if Battle for the Dream was his too?
The Battle for a Dream was made by Mitsuharu Fukuyama who if you go back a couple of videos I did one on him. Here's a playlist of all the songs he did too :)
czcams.com/play/PLN58ITKbq8wBdMDsB8kCoRJ08MyU6W1Bf.html
This absolute madman made the music in fzero GX too
4:12
Oh... thanks. I was starting to think Saejima dressed as Santa Claus swinging thugs around was some fever dream I had.
i never knew i needed to see kiryu chop onions while listening to fly and i'm glad i have experenced this
the ps2 version funk goes on fucking slap dud
I'd like to remind people that he also made music for my favorite game:
F-Zero GX.
You're spoiling us with all these videos lol
Kurohyou was a fun one.
I've not seen or heard anything much of what's in Super Monkey Ball since the GameCube days (Besides the news of Super Monkey Ball Mania and it's growing list of cameos including one certain Dojima no Ryu born from the same Visions of Amusement), but from just hearing his course themes for F-Zero GX (Both original compositions and arrangements & covers for classic themes, with "Wings For My Way", "Infinite Blue", & "Cover of Big Blue" some easy suggestions to start with, but *do not* miss the CD-bonus "Big Blue (Arrange Version)" as arranged by Ayako Saso if you like what you hear) alone, I'm left wondering how I haven't come across him being informally referred to as "Hypenori Shoji", even before he served as Ryu ga Gotoku's first music director and one of it's most frequent & prolific composers.
Most of his songs: Violent and very blood pumping.
Speed star: Nah we chillin'
Well Akiyama is a super chill guy who is juxtaposed to someone like Saejima and Kiryu who rip and tear lmao. Speed Star is awesome though easily one of the top dogs of normal battle themes
@@SnowiestAngeman Speed star just Gives me summer of '11-12 vibes, with Sunny after raining weather. It sounds weird af. But they say music is subjective, right?
Hidenori Shoji
Finally
Bishop-Violet Velveteen plays during random encounters with the Triads.
Hidenori Shoji is the goat. Pledge of Demon gives me chills. I hope he never leaves the Yakuza franchise.

Ahh this man made the og versions i only heard the remasters

This doesn't even go into how HARD Shoji went on the soundtrack for F-Zero GX
The way you flowed from pledge of demon to two dragons...
0:47 people who have never played dead souls when they hear about dead souls
It's just a recurring gag that I hate Dead Souls even though I don't
In 2009:
Shoji: Here's that track you wanted. *knocks out 'Bloodstained Philosophy'*
Nagoshi: Whoah, whoah! I asked for 'Kiryu, with his buds, chasing down a half-naked boss in a LOVE hotel!' This is clearly 'Kiryu, with his buds, chasing down a half-naked boss in a LUXURY hotel'. It won't work."
Shoji: Okay, how about this? *knocks out 'Ill Treatment'*
Nagoshi: Yeah, that works. But hang onto that other track. We might use that someday.
The man behind the best themes in the series
Hidenori Shoji Patriarch of RGG Sound Team works with T. Nagoshi since Scud Race I guess. He's got talent like musician and director because he had the intelligence to bring other talents from SEGA band, [H.]. For RGG Ishin! he learns to play to shamisen (or at least he has perfected himself). Not confirmed but I would surprised if he didn't composed "final" boss theme of LAD. Thks for this video series Kyoudai, it was very interesting.
I wish you the best for the rest of your channel and especially to have fun with LJ
Shoji is an incredibly talented man. But also thank you my broseph glad you liked it
My favorite " Update with gunfire"
We all know cooking was the real final boss to Kiryu
The creator of important people’s themes
5:16 that was the best music sync I've ever heard
6:40 it confuses me why the Kiwami remix of Shindo's theme from the first game plays for Shindo's goons, but not Shindo himself.
Shoji made me appreciate music and composers in video games more than I did before.
