Marc, that was a really helpful review. As a woman, I've never been all that excited by diamonds. But I can see how this particular set of diamonds could really put a polish to my shop. So in this case I could say that diamonds are a girl's best friend. And, sure, I will also say that diamonds are a boy's best friend.
Hey Bianca, you're the WINNER! I think I have your email through the Guild so I'll shoot you an email.
@@woodwhisperer Thank you so much!!! I'm doing a major happy dance right now! (I'm going to tell my friends that some guy I met on the internet just gave me a set of really fancy diamonds. That will be a hoot!)
@@biancaw.5987 Congrats!
@@slopes83 Thank you!!!
Thanks for the opportunity. "Diamonds are a Boy's Best Friend"
Diamonds are a boy’s best friend. Mark you are such a great teacher; always love your videos.
Loving the unsponsored/honest review approach. Diamonds are a boy's best friend.
A system like this might actually get me to sharpen more often. Thanks for the review. Diamonds are a boy’s best friend!
I appreciate your non-biased review approach. Great detail and informative. Diamonds Are A Boy’s Best Friend.
That setup looks like a nice, easy way to sharpen your tools. Thanks for not letting any conflicts of interest muddy your objective review. Diamonds are a boy’s best friend.
I'm sure it would cost more to post to me but diamonds are a man's best friend.
Greeat thorough review and I applaud you for not taking the sponsorship to have an unbiased review. Diamonds are a boy's best friend when it comes to sharpening tools
Thanks for having some humor and honesty in your reviews - it's much appreciated!
Diamonds are a boy's best friend.
Great review! I appreciate honest reviews instead of commercials. Diamonds are a boy's best friend!
Always nice to see an unbiased ad for a useful product. diamonds are a boys best friend
as an old carpenter and a new woodworker this system would be quite handy to have on hand. Diamonds ARE a boy's best friend!!!
You do some of the best wood working tool reviews on CZcams. Honest fair and upfront which I really appreciate. As someone who is just getting his shop up and running I appreciate the helpful tips and tricks. Your recent video on moving was a big help as I am going through the same thing getting my shop set up. Cheers. Diamonds are a boys best friend.
Marc, thanks for your transparency and honest reviews, been following for quite some time and I really appreciate how genuine you are! Thanks for the years of great content. Diamonds are a boy’s best friend!
Thank you for the fair unbiased reviews of tools needed in a shop. I am just getting started in the hobby so these reviews have been helping me learn and decide on items that I may not be as well versed on but am definitely needing to figure out. Thanks again for all of the tips and tricks over the years. Diamonds Are A Boy's Best Friend
Marc, as always, thank you for the honest review. One thing woodworkers can agree on. One thing woodworkers can not agree on is diamonds are a boy’s best friend.
Love the idea of the all in one station! As they say “Diamonds are a boys best friend!”
I've been watching your videos for a few short months and I appreciate your honest reviews. I still don't have my sharpening routine down yet as I'm really just getting started in the woodworking game. Lots of skills to learn, sharpening being one of them. Thanks a bunch for all or your insight. Diamonds are a boy's best friend.
Mark, love the reviews they never get old. “Diamonds Are A Boy’s Best Friend” keep up the good work
I'm really appreciating these in-depths reviews. Thanks for keeping it fresh for so long. You know what they say: diamonds are a boy's best friend.
I am just starting out...like really starting out and had no idea that i should sharpen a chisel i just bought before using it... really just starting out. thanks for all your hard work putting together these videos...love them. Diamonds are a boy's best friend
Thank you for keeping you videos unbiased. It’s great having a resource like you to rely upon. Diamonds are a boys best friend.
Like the sparkle is Marc's eyes, Diamonds are a boy’s best friend. Solid review!
I've been watching this channel for the better part of 8years now and I just have to say, your unbiased reviews are a great testament of the kind of person you are. Started as just a framer/ labourer and moved my way up into my position now as a finish carpenter. I've been using some wet stones but don't like how fast I can go through them and have to constantly flatten the stones and that uses them up, I switched to a dmt fine stone and love the ease of use on them so I can say with confidence, Diamonds are a boy's best friend.
All the way from Edmonton Alberta
Good luck with the move and take care
I love these unbiased reviews. You really helped me pick a miter gauge earlier in the year. Diamonds are a boys best friend though and I need a set of diamonds now Marc!
Great little review. I liked seeing how the full system works together. Diamonds are a boy's best friend.
I SO appreciate the unbiased reviews!! That makes it much more trustworthy.
Diamonds are a boys best friend.
I had looked at that system recently as I am just starting into the woodworking hobby. Diamonds Are A Boy’s Best Friend
I watch you every time a new TWW comes out! I find that your fun and refreshing look at wood working is perfect for learning the correct way to do wood projects. I could use that sharpening system so I will say Diamonds are a boy’s best friend!
Glad you mentioned the difficulties around having three stones in a row. When sharpening scrapers, large knives, scissors etc. it can be a pain to avoid touching the surrounding stones with the non-blade-parts of oddly shaped tools.
Thanks for the review!
As always, well done and informative. You’re one of the few that I’ve found and chosen to follow. Five diamond presentations, and as we know, diamonds are a boys best friend.
You’re absolutely right, there are so many sharpening methods out there, it makes it hard to know what works. Thanks for the review! Diamonds are a boy’s best friend.
Thank you for the great reviews and helping to show us what is helpful and essential in a workshop. Diamonds are a boy's best friend!
Really appreciate the review Marc! I’ve got individual diamond stones I use for sharpening that generally I enjoy using, but one day I hope to have an all-encompassing set like these to use. I know some people really enjoy ceramic stones, oil stones, etc. but to me nothing beats the ease and simplicity of diamond stones. As the old adage goes, “diamond are a boy’s best friend”.
Marc, love the honest reviews where you aren’t tied to a company. Sharpening seemed intimidating but after watching your video, I feel like with the right supplies that even I could do it. Diamonds are a boy’s best friend.
I like the simplicity of having everything you need in one somewhat compact location vice having a bunch of different items taking up space, thanks for the review! Diamonds are a boys best friend!
I’ve been searching for a new sharpening methodology, and I always thought that they would be cost prohibitive, but at the end of the day diamonds are a boys best friend!!!
Always learning something from you Marc. Love your videos. Good luck with the move. Can’t wait to see the new shop setup! Diamonds are a boy’s best friend!!
Always appreciate an honest/unbiased review. Keep up the amazing work! Diamonds are a boy's best friend
Thanks for the honest review. I've been looking at different diamond stone sets, and I like the fact that these come with everything you need all in a bag that can get put away tidy until it's needed. Diamonds are a boy's best friend!
Really appreciate how much effort and detail you put into review videos. Thanks for the insight and diamonds are a boy's best friend.
Got the email from the M Power folks about this system. Glad to see the review. By the look of those plates, diamonds are a boy's best friend.
I have a set of three chisels that I acquired second hand recently and they are in need of an entire redress. Your video is timely because I am in the market for a good sharpening solution for my shop. Having never owned chisels before now I never thought I needed a set of stones. And since Diamonds are a boy's best friend this system would be a great addition to my shop. Thanks for a great review Mark!
I first learned about you through William Ng when I took his class in 2013. He told me about a kid in his class that started a CZcams channel on wood working. So of course I looked you as soon as I got home and have been subscribed ever since. Funny thing is he pulled me aside and whispered in my ear that Diamonds are boys best friend….
I like how everything is all contained in one package. Good for travelling, and afterall, Diamonds are a Boy's Best Friend
Marc, I am new to woodworking and I have to say I thoroughly enjoy the content you provide to the community. While my wife’s opinion may differ, I have to say you have a point when you say that diamonds are a boy’s best friend.
Thanks, Marc - nice thorough review. I must say I have enjoyed your recent work on the channel. Thanks for the upbeat and engaging delivery. And diamonds are a boy’s best friend.
Hi from your future Missouri neighbor. Looks like an interesting system. Diamonds are a boy's best friend!
I am newer to woodworking and have been looking into a sharpening system as my wife bought me a set of chisels last year. I saw this system but wasn't sure if it would be worth the cost. Thanks for the review, it was very helpful! Diamonds are a boy's best friend.
Great review as always. It is refreshing to see an unbiased tool review. Diamonds are a boy’s best friend.
Another well done review! As always you did a great job of taking an open minded and unbiased approach! I always feel like I take away a good amount of pros and cons with your reviews!
Diamonds Are A Boy's Best Friend
This was a great demonstration on how to sharpen a chisel in general, not just with this product. Appreciate the candor and honest review. And I will always remember that diamonds are a boy's best friend.
We recently got a job to cut quadcopter parts out of carbon fiber panels (on a cnc). We were unfamiliar with the material so we used common carbide endmills which usually last for days. We could maybe cut 10 inches before the endmill got dull and broke. We then switched to diamond coated endmills. Even though they were 10 times more expensive than our regular endmills, we were able to run them hours at a time. In this case, diamonds are a boys best friend. We also make furniture, so this sharpening set up would definitely come handy. Awesome video as always. I drink out of a woodwhisperer's mug everyday and your book hybrid woodworking had me build my first oriental inspired ash bed years ago.
Diamonds are a man's best friend. Great video Marc. I'm a firefighter in Louisiana and it's important that our knives stay super sharp so I was glad to learn about proper ways to use a sharpening stone. I may give diamond stones a try.
Thanks for the review Mark. I've had my eye on this product for a few weeks now, but I haven't pulled the trigger yet. You've definitely shown me that diamonds are a boys best friend.
Diamonds are a woodworkers best friend.
I’ve always enjoyed watching your shows! You’ve inspired me to create some really great things for family and friends.
I especially liked the self-mounting strop stations. Diamonds are a boy's best friend. Thanks, Mark, for your always-informative videos!
Love your honest reviews - where you're free to speak your mind. Looks like a solid entry system. Diamonds are a boy’s best friend after all.
Love the unbiased tool reviews. Super helpful when it comes time to buy new tools. Diamonds are a boy's best friend.
Hello Marc, I'm a meatcutter who cuts big pieces into little pieces for the last 34 years. I'm getting ready to retire at the ripe old age of 53 and I want to go into the wood working business full time. I don't have a sharpening system for woodworking tools so this sharpening system would help me greatly as I am steadily purchasing tools, etc. Thank you, "diamonds are a boy's best friend".
My biggest struggle in the shop is sharpening. Please and thank you.
Diamonds are a boy's best friend!
Great job! When my mom woke me up on my birthday she would say Diamonds are a boy's best friend!
Your reviews are always a trusted source of info for me! Thank you for doing what you do!
Diamonds are a boy's best friend!
I really appreciate that!
Thanks for sharing. Anything that makes sharpening easier is a huge bonus. Diamonds are a boy’s best friend.
I am from the Netherlands! And I realy want this sharpening set! Because I am 67 years young and I am a beginner in woodworking! Diamonds are a boys best friend
Thanks for the review. I saw this same system in a video by Stumpy Nubs recently and almost pulled the trigger then. As a relatively new woodworker I am just beginning to appreciate the need for sharpening. As far as the form factor goes I can appreciate how it interferes with your normal process, but rectangular or square-shaped the plates won't lose their shape, diamonds are a boy's best friend.
I learned about sharpening chisels about a year ago, I was amazed how sharp they can get. I almost got obsessed with sharpening. Diamonds are a Boys Best Friend
I appreciate the review. Having been a woodworker and shop teacher for some time, its hard to imagine someone "in" the trade making a switch to this sharpening system. Of all the things in my shop that are taking up too much room or I don't have a great spot for... sharpening tools are not at the top of the list. That being said, I could definitely see this being a good entry piece for someone just getting into woodworking. As well, I do see this as a nice solution for my classroom. Never having to tell students to grab this grit or that grit sounds awesome, or having to explain which order to work in. So for that reason, diamonds are a boy's best friend!
I could see this sharpening system being great for a finish carpenter working out of a truck or van. A quick touchup during the day and everything needed is in one place.
It's nice you include bloopers and other stuff at the end of the videos. Best wishes with the move and your future in Missouri.
Diamonds are a boy's best friend.
Marc, I really appreciate your unbiased reviews. Pointing out all the pros and cons, helps me make an informed decision. Thank you. And remember...Diamonds are a boys best friend.
I really appreciate your approach to disclosing any relationship you might have/had with the manufacturer. I trust you as a reviewer anyway, but it’s a really nice touch on top of another solid review.
Marc, I enjoyed this video. As I always say "putting the time in to the diamond makes diamonds are a boy's best friend".
Learning about all this has been great. Much appreciate your videos, i love the way your mind works and how you explain things.
It's my birthday in two weeks...and you know..diamonds are a boys best friend!
Very thoughtful package. As for phrase, do you want our unique one? Here goes; “People say doing nothing is impossible, but I do nothing every day.”
Diamonds are a boy's best friend. Especially since I recently bought a new set of chisels and discovered I don't have the stones to prep them. So, I've been debating what system to get and this one has been on the list. Thanks for the review!
I really appreciate the special notes about alternatives to what the manufacturer provides. Diamonds are a boy's best friend! :-D
What a great and handy litttle setup! Tell the lady you bought diamonds for her, then convince her to sharpen your chisels, and then truly “Diamonds are a boys best friend!”
I do “rough” grinding on my cbn wheels for my lathe tools, and have free handed on a finer stone. I believe having all this together and the stropping will help a lot. Diamonds are a boy’s best friend! Thanks for the review
Thank you for taking the time to go through and make this video, of course we know you get paid to do it we still appreciate it and I for one would be happy to appease the algorithm. I’ve been listening to your podcast for a while and you’re a big part of why I have no problem ignoring the people who act like they know what they’re talking about as far as woodworking goes so again, thank you. And of course, diamonds are a boys best friend. -Bailen
Very helpful review-I also immediately noticed the riddle with the center stone but can easily be worked around. Another helpful video as always! Diamonds Are A Boy's Best Friend!
I appreciate your reviews. You do a great job pointing out the good and not so good aspects of the item. Diamonds are a boy’s best friend.
As always, I enjoyed the unbiased and helpful review. You can always tell the difference between someones honest opinion, and when they are reading from a script. Good luck on the move, and i look forward to furthered content my friend. Diamonds are a boys best friend.
Pretty nice and clean setup, thanks for the demo! Diamonds are a boy’s best friend.
As always, your reviews and presentations are top-notch. Always enjoy them no matter what the subject. Sharpening is always one of those subjects that I find very interesting and your review gave me a lot of good information. Thanks for taking your time to do this and also give away a nice gift. thanks for sharing all of your expertise. diamonds are a boy’s best friend.
as a retired furniture maker who started with oil stones, its all we had back then, i now use diamond plates and love them. hated the mucking round with oil and water stones. i use water and a little dish liquid on them in a spray bottle, and finish on a strop. whole process free handing takes under a minute per chisel. i always rinse off the diamond stones and dry to keep optimal.
That does appear to be a great addition to the shop. Thanks for not quitting. Diamonds are a boys best friend. Cheers.
Thanks for this video. I'm just starting out in wood working and caught this on your channel. I have watched your epsodes from the begining. Your channel helps me with ideas for me small workshop (1 car garage). Got a kick watching you and family through the years (love the humor).
What I would like to learn next is carving (working on wood turning right now). I have been thinking along the lines of making wooden carousels.
Hope to learn some carving for the horses. So... Diamonds are a boy's best friend. Whish you well on your move.
I love your reviews. You don't let sponsorship stand in the way of the outcome of your review. You always present the facts in the fairest test possible. And you always end the review leaving it to the viewers own interpretation. Diamonds are a boy’s best friend!
As always, a helpful review. Been researching a sharpening system on and off for a while but still haven't picked one up. This is nice and compact which would be perfect for my setup. Diamonds Are A Boy's Best Friend
It’s amazing how many different systems are out there. Currently I have using the scary sharp method. Thanks for the review. Diamonds Are A Boy’s Best Friend
I really do appreciate these new fully unbiased review segments. Can't wait to see what's next, esp something I have yet to buy. But that being said, can't believe you are making me say, "Diamonds are a boy's best friend!"
I’ve been woodworking for more than 45 years and, in that time, you won’t be surprised to learn that just about everything has changed. One principle has not changed however and that is that there are many ways to achieve a good result and a few ways guaranteed to achieve a bad result. I have oil stones, I have water stones, I have diamond stones. I have a Tormek T8 and those abrasive films. What I have learned is that, to make a habit, the process has to be easy; by which I mean, if the process is difficult then you won’t do it as often. I can’t think I’m going to buy any more chisels or plane blades but the process I have “developed” is
- new blades are measured to see if they have a flat back. Generally, cheap blades or secondhand blades are less likely to whilst new expensive blades should have. If they don’t have a flat back, then grind them and polish them until they are flat but you only need worry about the final 20mm of the blade; if you have Japanese chisels then you will see that only that final bit could be flat. I use the side of the Tormek wheel (220 grit?) to do the hard work and then diamond stones to get me past 1000 grit. Then film to get me up to 4000 grit? When the back is flattened, you need never do that again unless you seriously damage it
- I then use diamond stones or film to get my primary bevel (25 degrees for a chisel and 30 degrees for most plane blades but i don’t get hung up on this. Consistency is better than accuracy - if all your primary bevels are 23 degrees or 27 degrees, it matters not). I take the primary bevel (the large shiny portion of the front) to about 1000 grit - I don’t see the need for anymore
- I then make my secondary bevel that only goes up 1 or 2mm up the newly shiny primary bevel. That secondary bevel is usually around 2 degrees more than the primary; so, 27 on a chisel and 32 on a plane but consistency rather than a fixed number). This secondary bevel is the only bevel that you actually cut with - so I take mine upto 6000, maybe 10000 grit.
- to achieve these angles on the blades, I use either a Veritas honing guide (but there are many guides out there) or I have several jigs made of ply and each cut to the right angle.
- finally, I strip by using a piece of leather with compound or the leather wheel on the Tormek.
That’s it to get to the right sharpness for me. Now keeping it there.
I have a piece of 3 or 4mm leather about 300 x 200 (just what I had). Whenever I get my chisel trays out, I also put next to it the leather together with a burnishing compound. There are expensive branded compounds or you can use Peek metal polishing paste or even T cut. The main thing is that, every time I take a chisel out of its tray, I strop it on to the leather; perhaps 10 times. When I’ve finished using that particular chisel, I strop it again and put it back. I don’t know exactly how much work you can do with that chisel before you need to get a new secondary bevel but it’s a lot; just keep an eye on that bevel and when you think it needs doing, go back and make a new secondary bevel.
There is a knack to sharpening but don’t worry, practice will make you perfect. The most important thing for me is to have those strops to hand; it becomes a habit to strop before and after each task. Get that habit, and you have it worked out.
Work out your own preferred method. Watch how others do it and take what you will from that. Diamond stones are not that expensive; films are cheaper and perhaps a good way to start but you have to keep on buying replacement films as they gradually lose their effectiveness.
Thank you for a great review. I have been looking into a sharpening system and have seen a few like this. Never would have thought about them being lined up that way being a problem. I can see it's not a big one but a draw back. Thank you it's a great review and it's products like this that really show diamonds are a boy's best friend.
I’m finishing building my shop and could definitely use a sharpening system! Diamonds are a boy’s best friend
just starting to get into the fine hand tools and enjoy learning the different sharpening systems. Diamonds are a boy's best friend
I like the aspect of an all inclusive system. After all, diamonds are a boy's best friend. Thanks for the great review.
Great review, I currently do not have a setup sharpening station. I like the way the M.Power is all in one kit. And as always Diamond are a boy's best friend. Thank you for sharing!
I always enjoy your videos Marc, great job explaining the sharpening process. I think Diamonds are a boy’s best friend!
First off, I love that you have always given a very neutral and unbiased opinion on things like this. It really helps with determining if it is actually a good product or if it has some sort of company weight behind opinions. Secondly, I have seen some other people use this system and it intrigued me enough to look into it, but I couldnt bring myself to spending the money when I already have decent diamond stones and a system that works. With that being said, if I didnt have a system already in place, I think this is an excellent first sharpening system/station that covers pretty much everything you need for any level of sharpening. And in my opinion, I love diamond stones just for the sheer fact you dont have to flatten them. Because, after all, Diamonds are a boy's best friend
