- Confession: I didn't know how the sport of football (American football) worked until I was a Freshman in college. The language, rules, and really all of it felt like a barrier to keep me out of the game. I couldn't enjoy even watching it, much less playing it, because of the gap in language. I hear so many people talk about disc golf with a familiar language which does not welcome new people into the sport.
I love when announcers and commentators within disc golf will drop educational comments into the live stream or post-produced coverage because it helps bridge that gap for new players to be welcomed into the game. This video's goal was to create a resource new players could find and veteran players could recommend helping explain what disc golf is all about along with some terms and things you'll see while you're out there on the course! Terms: “Noice / Nice”: Words that should never be said until the thrown disc hits the ground and stops moving. If spoken mid-flight will cause the disc to hit a nearly invisible branch AND/OR get up and roll away on landing.

I remember, early on, watching tournament videos on CZcams and wondering who Annie was and why they kept talking about throwing her in the woods. They meant "Anny" or "Anhyzer".
"Nose" really means the leading (edge towards the target) edge of the disc. That should help make it easy to understand "nose up" and "nose down".
"worm burner" is a disc released (usually a mistake) too low such that it cuts across the top of the grass.
"card" is a group of people playing a round together, usually in a competition. It comes from everyone in the group being on the same score card.
who is "away": the person on the card who is currently furthest from the basket. It is this person's turn to throw next.
"pig farmer" is someone who (really) likes Pigs and buys a bunch of Pigs and finds a way to insert Pigs into unrelated conversations. Do you know anyone like this?
"smash", "smush", "bomb" usually refer to throws that send a disc a loonnnnnnnnnnnnnggg way away (much farther than I can)
"noodle" or "noodle arm" is someone like me who can't throw a/any disc very far (ie. can't "smash" a throw) Not sure of the official distance limit. See below for term "internet distance"
"snap" is the magic result of proper technique and form that allows you to "bomb". I can't tell you much more because I can't snap or bomb.
"internet distance" how far people claim they can throw, which is often inflated from how far they can really throw.
"chain out" is what it sounds like. When you hit the basket chains with the disc, but the disc ends up on the ground. Or in a tree. Or rolls into a river. Anywhere but resting in the basket.
"pencil trees" also what it sounds like: bastard trees with small diameters that taunt you with their ability to reach out and send your disc the wrong way
"sticky" when used to describe a disc, usually means it likes to stay where it lands: "stick" the landing versus....
"ground play" or "flare" or "skip" when a disc skips off the ground - usually at a higher speed - and continues for more distance, for better or worse so you can ....
"skip ace" when you skip the disc off the group and into the basket on your first throw. Hope you got that on video.
"dump" a hard, hyzer turn sometimes referred to as a "meathook"
"dump truck" just another term to describe a beefy disc
"meethook" sometimes used to refer to a beefy disc and other times to refer to the shape of a light resembling a hard hyzer that shapes like a meethook
"hit the line" or "hit the angle" - sorry, I don't know anything about either of these. Can someone help me? (couldn't resist the self-deprecating humor)
"smeagle" a studly throw that combines a "smash" (see above) that goes in the basket to result a a score of two under par "eagle". "smash" plus "eagle": "smeagle"
"snowman" a score of 8 on a hole because, you know, a headless snowman looks more like the number 8 than the math symbol for infinity which is what it felt like you scored on that hole
"destroyer" some people will tell you this is a famous driver disc from Innova. This really refers to a mosquito bred from standing water on disc golf courses.
With that, I'll quit before I throw a disc down a rabbit hole.

Describes when a player's shot ends up so close to the basket that they can practically drop their disc into the basket on their next shot. Not always literally that close.
A few terms:
Low ceiling - When the shot that is required has to stay lower to the ground because of some obstacle/s. Usually referring to tree limbs, branches, or foliage on the fairway and/or putt. A disc with a higher glide number is great to use for shots that have a long low ceiling.
Turnover - When your throw is meant to go from the way that your body is facing, gliding to the other side of your body that your back is facing. SO: a right-hand backhand will start from the left, and slowly glide to the right. A left-hand backhand will start from the right and slowly glide to the left. The opposite is true for a forehand. Discs that are neutral or understable are awesome choices when choosing this type of throw.
Usually, this shot is used if you do not want a forehand to fade out quick, and instead a turnover will again slowly glide in the direction that a forehand would fade to. Hope that makes sense
Tree love/tree kick - When you hit a tree, branch, leaves, etc. and it kicks back into the fairway, gets your disc going in the right direction, saves your disc from going far away, from the basket, or saves it from going out of bounds.
Bullseye - only necessary when explaining what commentators vocabulary in coverage. But it means that your disc lands within 10 feet of the basket from your tee shot, or second shot from a par 4. Landing in the bullseye is a term used to describe a fantastic shot
Layout - When there is more than one teepad on one (or several) holes throughout the course, which leads me to another term:
Pin placement - when there is more than one Disc Golf Basket placement on one (or several) holes throughout the course
The above two terms are popular among Disc Goif courses because it offers the chance to play the same course, but with a different variety so you don't play the same course each time you get out to play. Usually, the layout has multiple options to offer a different way a hole is designed to get to the basket. Also, there is usually a hard layout, and an intermediate/easier layout to offer all types of skill levels to play and have fun!

BLACK ACE: Throwing a disc into a basket that was not the intended target on the hole
I'm not sure if some of these are common or if they're just used in my community.
Laser - A fast and straight throw
Tree chopping - Hitting a tree (usually pretty hard)
Lumberjack - Someone how hits multiple trees in a row or just hitting them often (pairs well with "tree chopping")
Ace - Hole in one throw
Disc charger - A circle usually drawn on picnic benches or any flat surface that "charges" your disc
"Nice out" - refers to being in a bad spot or "jail" and successfully getting your disc out and into the fairway.
Turbo - Holding your disc like a pizza platter to throw it from the highest height you can. Usually your thumb is centered under the disc and your fingers on the side to give the disc its spin.
CTP: Closest To Pin
Ace: Hole in one
*Duck quack*: Missed putt

One thing I’ve noticed is that the terms “flippy” and “beefy” are used in comparison to the discs original flight numbers. For instance “my favorite disc is my flippy firebird.” Probably doesn’t mean that the firebird is understandable, but that the disc is more understandable than a normal firebird.
That's interesting. Its like flipier got shortened to flippy.
But do people actually say "this is my Beefy Roadrunner?"
@@snikwahjets I can confirm that, really interesting theory by op. In my world I've definitely heard people talking about their "beefy Sail," which would be an os version of our most understable driver.

Pin High and Hazard
Pin High is you landed the correct distance on your throw to the basket but not in line with the basket
Hazard should bring to mind a sand bunker in ball golf. If you land in a Hazard, you still throw from your lie but lose a stroke.

Star frame is a term from bowling! It refers to a a team all closing out their frames.(meaning either a spare or strike for however many members)
Listening the pros talking sometimes is like walking into Harry Potter wand shop. Example.
"I got Destroyer, twelve speed, halo core. Unbending and unyielding..
Not mentioning the finest wine tasting likes out there with all the fancy words(slang)
Hyzer/anhyzer/bombs/rollers/flex/flip shenanigans.

Patent Pending is a shot where you're throwing with your back towards the basket to give yourself a better angle to get around things usually. This is usually a scramble shot which is when you have a less than ideal shot that puts you into a bad position. Dynamic Discs has a nice video about scramble shots and goes over the Patent Pending as well as a few other shots.

I work with Latitude Regenerative Real Estate and have been diving into disc golf and moving away from traditional golf because of its incredibly wasteful use of water and its use of harmful fertilizers. Your channel has been super helpful for me to get into the sport and get excited about making the transition.
NICE! another player proclaiming your shot is "NICE" before the shot is complete, causing it to hit a tree or other object. Your videos crack me up dude!
“Hit the cage” or “grill” - when your disc hits the actual metal basket but doesn’t go in
“Hit the band” - when you hit the circular band on the top of the basket, usually used in reference to missing but some putts can hit the band and go in
“Ace run” or “I’m running it” is in reference to trying to throw an ace on the hole, even when missing could mean you go out of bounds
“Cut roll” is when your disc lands at an angle and rolls in a circular pattern, can be good or bad depending on where the disc ends up
“The disc has a number” is in reference to any disc that has a phone number on the back of it, so if it gets lost whoever finds it can try to get it back to the owner
“Mulligan” is where someone takes an extra shot, usually a putt, and then scores it as only one throw - NOT COOL
“Two off the tee” is when on the first tee of a round each person is allowed to throw two shots and take their lie from whichever drive is better
“Skying a disc” is in reference to throwing a drive almost straight up in the air - usually a bad drive
“Hunting for discs” is where you go to OB or rough areas that are often thrown into and look for lost discs in hopes that you find ones with no number

HYZER-FLIP: Throwing a disc, usually understable, on a hyzer release and having it flip up to flat and fly or flip even more so and it finishes the flight in an anhyzer trajectory. Another great video Robbie!

Midranges are the best discs and I’ll die on that hill. They’re so shapeable and they feel so nice to hold and you can bomb them if you need to. Especially downhill
I have been playing for almost a year now. After seeing this video, I am amazed at how much I learned through osmosis. Great video with a lot of information. If this video was the first thing I saw before throwing any discs, I probably would not have started playing. This is not a dig at the video, just a dig at how complicated the sport can be. Glad I am playing and glad this video exsists.
THANK YOU for correctly describing the terms overstable, stable/neutral and understable. These terms get constantly misused and it's great to have a good reference for people to see how to properly use the terms.

Robbie thank you for helping me get back. Injuries (hip replacements and femoral nerve damaged) took me out for awhile. My right leg is still not 80% and my form is garbage, but played 1st round in 4 years, I can't get a decent drive yet so I pulled out my beginner discs and went for consistency vs distance. I'm ok with a couple stokes off. Thanks again for helping find something I love and I realize its about getting out and having fun. Oh, Polecat driver category was for me today? 94" 141gm Polecat. This disc is my comfort disc won't go far but I can make it anything I want. (polecatgang)

You may also hear the term "star frame" in a bowling league when the entire team strikes in a single frame.
It actually makes more sense in the context of bowling, since they refer to “frames”.

it's what happens when your spell checker gets involved with your post - happens to all of us. A hyzer flip shot is when a disc released on a hyzer angle "flips up" to flat (or beyond) as it moves forward. This is typically done by releasing an understable disc on a hyzer angle. I am guessing here at the "gut" part of it, but I would think it meant flipping to flat (not beyond) to execute a shot that is straight "up the gut" or straight at the basket or straight through a narrow gap.
If someone asks “what are you bagging?” they’re asking what discs you use when you’re playing.
Admitting that a distance driver is “too much disc” for you means that you can’t get it up to speed yet.
It’s not an embarrassing thing, lots of beginning players want to throw the big shots with distance drivers like the pros before they’re ready for it. I own two distance drivers and very rarely actually use them in a round because they’re still too much disc for me to control
there are putters that I can't seem to get up to speed ... but then, I probably got the "angle" wrong. Liam is 100% correct here - it takes time to get proper form and technique to get distance out of drivers.
When your disc is in the fairway, and your foot must be in the paper size space behind the disc, can you hop/step up while throwing? Like you would in a drive? As long as your foot ends up in that space behind the disc?

What's that West coast "20' rule (or is is it 12')?" I know it has something do do with the scrubby trees so common out there, but I don't really get what it is.
If your disc is stuck in the tree more than 2m (6ft) off the ground, a penalty stroke is incurred to retrieve the disc. If it's below 2m just play it as normal. The "2 meter rule"

People kept referring to CTP all the time. Who's CTP 10. Today it's CTP 7. Etc. Turns out it meant Closest To Pin. Or in other words, a game within the game of who can put the disc closest to the basket on a given hole.
Also the term "Golf start" is used a lot to refer to what in golf is called a "shotgun" start. Where groups of players start on every hole at the same time.

Depends on the disc's flight characteristics, really. An overstable distance driver thrown at the optimal speed of an overstable midrange will fade off into the ground a lot more quickly than the midrange disc, which can end up making the midrange go further for people without the power to optimally throw the driver.
