- Tony Schiera was more than 700 miles into a 1,000-mile long bicycle ride from Indianapolis to Washington, DC with his wife Rachel when tragedy nearly struck. He was clinging to hope that he was just dehydrated, but that hope quickly faded when he was rushed to one of the premiere cardiac centers in the United States.
Despite being exceptionally physically fit, Tony had major blockages in at least five arteries. Doctors told him that he required life-saving quintuple bypass surgery. It proved to be a success, but just the first step in a new life.
Although heart disease ran rampant in his family, he and his wife embarked on a mission to find out whether genetics were to blame for his brush with death. What they would learn would change both of their lives and Tony’s outlook for the future. He was no longer living on borrowed time. He was now destined to live to a ripe old age.
Together they have discovered that a new way of eating doesn’t mean depriving themselves of their favorite foods. Instead, it means discovering heart healthy recipes to make them, including one for mac and cheese.
The Schieras join “The Weight Loss Champion” Chuck Carroll to share an unbelievable story of survival and rising from trauma to ride toward a brighter future.

As a heart attack survivor when I was 28 years old, I never saw a nutritionist. I wanted to go vegetarian but my cardiologist and PCP then in 2009 told me no because soy is bad for you. I was almost 300 pounds and knew then it was tied to my diet. I’m now 42 & almost 4 years vegan. I’m in the best shape & health of my life & a competitive body builder. Heart disease may be “genetic” but your diet is what makes it manifest or not. Eat more plants people!
Agree! Same here! Eat what I like and as much of it as I like. Plant based whole food lifestyle has leveled out my weight.
Congratulations Tony AND Rachel!
Thank you for sharing this story. My brother died from 100 % blockage of his Carotid artery. He was only 48. He was fit and healthy, but knew he suffered from high cholesterol and blood pressure, but he mostly ate fish and vegan. Stayed away from meat. He was running on his treadmill and suffered cardiac arrest. He never suffered any major chest pains. I'm assuming he might have felt the same way Tony felt that morning. I am fairly healthy and after my brother's death did a a full heart scan and glad that I do not have no calcium buildup. I will be seeing a cardiologist to conduct more tests to ensure that this doesn't happen to me. Your podcast is so amazing. I have learned so much and thank you for all the information and guests that you have. What hurts is that my brother did everything to prevent this because our father died of heart disease but he was 77. I guess he needed to do more like seeing a cardiologist early on. I hope people be more proactive with their health so this doesn't happen to them.
I hear you! 65 and steady at 118, at 5’9” used to fluctuate btw 145-130
Chocolate cake recipe! Yes!

I used Esselstyn's Book to reverse my hardening of the arteries after a minor heart attack. Congrats on the changes you made.
Book name?
@@VenuGopal-tt3ee reverse heart disease
Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease by Caldwell Esselstyn MD. It’s a great book I got for my sons too
Its really not that hard to change immediately, I was 65 and you must put your mind in what you eat🥦
Chuck, can you please get us the chocolate cake recipe?
My LDL fell to 54 when I changed my diet, dropping meats, dairy, oil and packaged goods.
I am watching this video. Because I am a heart patient and had TIA stroke. Want to know their recipe exactly. Thank you for sharing us. Love your video thank you Chuck. Thank you to everyone.
Rip’s cheesy chickpeas! Yes! And the plant based woman warrior! Love all of the Esselstyns so much.
Elevated troponins - indicator (not always) of heart damage. Major initial test for a cardiac work-up.
Also let me just say that these folks are part of my life goals. Sharp as tacks; fit as a tailored tux. Love to see it. Thanks for sharing your story. You are right though that such hospitals don't respond to that sort of inquiry or curiosity. They aren't researchers per se. All they care about is stabilization, not preventative care. Unfortunately this does a disservice to patients who would otherwise get their curiosity fed and be more informed and impassioned about their health.
The thing is, as was alluded by the guests, if you give someone a hammer everything is a nail. Same goes for surgeons. They're too specialized to speak on diet and so forth.
Thanks again for another inspiring information
Another great episode! At this point I’m not surprised.
"So, your beer was held, and instead of scrappin', you went and started to do a little bit of research." 😆🤣🤣🤣 Well done, Chuck! That is cracking me up! 😂
That statement is great life advice!
Love steel cut oatmeal with fresh fruit berries and banana, and flax and hemp seeds. Love Dr Esselstyn
Sounds perfecf 👏
This is my desert as well.
Did you find a solution for. Coconut free plant. cheese
.Non in London Food Markets..
Thank you
@@semaaral2498 Just kind of had to give it up. When I get tempted I think of the cows, the horror they endure and the fact that the 90% blockage I recently discovered, as a vegan, was probably from dairy, and saturated fat and I just pass it by. Clean up is so much easier when you don't have saturated fat in your diet.
These two are such a cute couple! 😊
Could you provide a link to the chocolate cake recipe mentioned in the interview? It sounds amazing and I would love to try it out. Thank you.
Lovely interview....loved the sweet potato chocolate cake recipe. Such a cute couple and Chuck is always so interesting to watch....🤩🙏
The title of the Esselstyn book is Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease.
Another super podcast 🏅
Thank you.🙏
My husband will be going abroad for a heart checkup soon
I.Not feeling well and NHS in London can't help anymore.😔Heart attack people are dying in the ambulances😓
He has 2 stands from 25 years ago in London when we had the golden days of NHS.
He has 4 stands on his legs & 3 stands in heart arteries again in recent years abroad his legs were opened with a special tool, radiologists made the surgery & used carbon dioxide as they put him to sleep, the reason to protect the kidneys cause he is a renal patient as well😔
Now Will see the results hopefully soon on this trip
Happy Ending For this couple gave me a moral. Wish Them a Healfhy Long life.
Able to understand Rachel's speaking clearly but Tony's I had difficulty hearing all the sentences😟
I will listen from my I phone again.
Maybe hear better.
But Rachel explained everything clearly.
Got the cake recipe.
Thank you, Chuck.
Love and am addicted to your podcasts
But if they speak little slowly and people like me will get more benefits from their experience.
Thanks again.
God Bless 🙏💙🌹
Still waiting for a brand name coconut oil-free feta cheese or other chesee names.
Never able to find one in London🧀😋
The subtitles could help probability ?
I would love a link to the sweet potato chocolate cake too 😋

Thank you so much for sharing. It would be great if you could interview someone that was at the same level with a stoke. How did they feel and what changes did they make?
Cake - Does anyone know where I can find that cake recipe? I've searched the internet but not having any luck yet.

@@rachelschiera4066 Thanks! 😊
Thank you!
@@rachelschiera4066 I made this, and my hubby loved it! We shook some Coco nibs on top. Thanks again for sharing the recipe! 😁
Thanks for good program. Please print recipe for your listeners. Wanda
It's amazing how people are still using family history as reason for their heart attacks, rather than blaming the food there are eating. If heart disease is reversible how can it be family history. The family eat bad too, that's why they heart desease
You nailed it! The first thing I thought of when the man said heart disease “runs in our family” ! 🙄🙄🙄
I’m from the Mediterranean and we definitely don’t eat meat once a day. More like, if we’re lucky, one a month
These two did not take ownership of their diet being the culprit!
It's not the meat. It's excessive carbohydrates. The sugar causes Inflammation of the arteries. The body tries to repair the damage, leading to a roadblock in the artery.
This guy talks about losing excess weight. You gain weight from excessive carbohydrate intake not a meat intake.
Insulin resistance is the leading cause of heart attacks, stroke, dementia, alzheimers, and diabetes.
I heard that Rich rolls wife has a cheese company, that’s supposed to be delicious, I don’t know if it’s hard cheese or not though. Her name is Julie Plotz, and her company is called. SriMu
Hi Chuck! VinousVegan here.

Hello everyone
Where can I find the Sweet Potato Cake recipe?
Any post surgery depression ?
Didn't have any, or if I did, I didn't know it. I was too focused on getting stronger and readying to start a new job.
Problem was also TOO MUCH exercise. Just as bad as too little
Exactly, like too much money is just as bad as too little money.
Indeed, Check Roger Seheult most people don't know this about exercise
I’d love to see his daily routine such as what he eats etc
Breakfast nearly every day: 1/2 cup oatmeal with 1/2 apple, 1/2 banana, 1/2 berries, 1 tbsp peanut butter powder and flax seeds, cinnamon, turmeric, pepper, Macha, fresh chopped spinach or kale, oatmilk. (1 day a weekend we'll do waffles, fruit, and soy bacon). Lunch: Left over dinner from the night before, an orange or two, apple, some sweet thing (cookie or cakey thing). Rice cakes, pretzels, or home-made cracker as snacks. Dinner: various recipes out of How Not to Die or other WFPBNO books.
Exercise wise, I try to walk/move 5 to 7 miles a dayMondays, I lift and run. Tuesday's, I walk. Wednesdays, I swim in the morning and yoga in the evening. Thursday I run or walk. Friday I try to swim or walk. Saturday a long walk and/or 15 to 20 mile bike ride. Sunday another ride or long walk.
@@tonyschiera2624 thank u 🙏 😊
Agar agar … look up vegan cheese made with this gelatin like powder made of seaweed.
On the subject of exercise check Roger Seheult's pod cast titled "most people don't know this about exercise"
His medcram video on light having benefits is also good
Wheres the written recipe for that sweetpotato cake? :D

Can u
You use nut butters?
One can, but I don't. I rarely eat nuts due to the high fat content. I do about 1 tbsp of peanut butter powder a day. Occasionally two.
@@tonyschiera2624 thank you
Not if you have diabetes, high cholesterol and high triglycerides .
I can make make cheese that is hard enough to slice or grate.
Hi roomies.🥝🍊🍅
Cashew cheese is close
No nuts on Esselstyn program.
You know what works really well though...it doesn't result in a hard cheese, but it is a decent liquid cheese...this recipe: docs.google.com/document/d/1orxNKhQFQ3tIQiF7VjcYUX7rh7sF6HiI1elsFHsl1AY/edit?usp=sharing
Eat it every days
She makes a hard-ish cheese: czcams.com/video/IImuneWpVwI/video.html
Thanks for the vid. I might try this but cut out the cashews.
@@tonyschiera2624 😀 she says on other videos that you can sub sunflower seeds?!?
