Cardiac Survivor: How to Eat to Live | Tony and Rachel Schiera

  • Tony Schiera was more than 700 miles into a 1,000-mile long bicycle ride from Indianapolis to Washington, DC with his wife Rachel when tragedy nearly struck. He was clinging to hope that he was just dehydrated, but that hope quickly faded when he was rushed to one of the premiere cardiac centers in the United States.
Despite being exceptionally physically fit, Tony had major blockages in at least five arteries. Doctors told him that he required life-saving quintuple bypass surgery. It proved to be a success, but just the first step in a new life.
Although heart disease ran rampant in his family, he and his wife embarked on a mission to find out whether genetics were to blame for his brush with death. What they would learn would change both of their lives and Tony’s outlook for the future. He was no longer living on borrowed time. He was now destined to live to a ripe old age.
Together they have discovered that a new way of eating doesn’t mean depriving themselves of their favorite foods. Instead, it means discovering heart healthy recipes to make them, including one for mac and cheese.
The Schieras join “The Weight Loss Champion” Chuck Carroll to share an unbelievable story of survival and rising from trauma to ride toward a brighter future.

As a heart attack survivor when I was 28 years old, I never saw a nutritionist. I wanted to go vegetarian but my cardiologist and PCP then in 2009 told me no because soy is bad for you. I was almost 300 pounds and knew then it was tied to my diet. I’m now 42 & almost 4 years vegan. I’m in the best shape & health of my life & a competitive body builder. Heart disease may be “genetic” but your diet is what makes it manifest or not. Eat more plants people!

Thank you for sharing this story. My brother died from 100 % blockage of his Carotid artery. He was only 48. He was fit and healthy, but knew he suffered from high cholesterol and blood pressure, but he mostly ate fish and vegan. Stayed away from meat. He was running on his treadmill and suffered cardiac arrest. He never suffered any major chest pains. I'm assuming he might have felt the same way Tony felt that morning. I am fairly healthy and after my brother's death did a a full heart scan and glad that I do not have no calcium buildup. I will be seeing a cardiologist to conduct more tests to ensure that this doesn't happen to me. Your podcast is so amazing. I have learned so much and thank you for all the information and guests that you have. What hurts is that my brother did everything to prevent this because our father died of heart disease but he was 77. I guess he needed to do more like seeing a cardiologist early on. I hope people be more proactive with their health so this doesn't happen to them.

Elevated troponins - indicator (not always) of heart damage. Major initial test for a cardiac work-up.
Also let me just say that these folks are part of my life goals. Sharp as tacks; fit as a tailored tux. Love to see it. Thanks for sharing your story. You are right though that such hospitals don't respond to that sort of inquiry or curiosity. They aren't researchers per se. All they care about is stabilization, not preventative care. Unfortunately this does a disservice to patients who would otherwise get their curiosity fed and be more informed and impassioned about their health.
The thing is, as was alluded by the guests, if you give someone a hammer everything is a nail. Same goes for surgeons. They're too specialized to speak on diet and so forth.

When I get tempted I think of the cows, the horror they endure and the fact that the 90% blockage I recently discovered, as a vegan, was probably from dairy, and saturated fat and I just pass it by. Clean up is so much easier when you don't have saturated fat in your diet.

It's not the meat. It's excessive carbohydrates. The sugar causes Inflammation of the arteries. The body tries to repair the damage, leading to a roadblock in the artery.
This guy talks about losing excess weight. You gain weight from excessive carbohydrate intake not a meat intake.
Insulin resistance is the leading cause of heart attacks, stroke, dementia, alzheimers, and diabetes.
