- Paul Buitink talks to John Mearsheimer, a renowned American political scientist and international relations scholar who belongs to the realist school of thought. He is a Professor at the University of Chicago.
John gives an overview of what offensive realism is. Furthermore he discusses the European Union's foreign policy and how dependent it is on that of the US. He explains Russia's strategy and how Ukraine is going to lose with severe negative consequences for Europe and NATO.
He also gives his view on the tensions between US and China and how the situation in the Middle East could spiral out of control.
At the end John discusses the strength of the dollar and how in general things will get worse across the world before they get any better.

Just loved this exchange near the closing:
"Perhaps some positive words from your end to close the conversation with."
"I actually have no positive words. I think things are only going to get worse."
Well, there you have it.
😂
I love it! I appreciate his honesty and I’m gonna admit that my least favorite people to interact with nowadays are those who willfully IGNORE reality bc it makes them feel bad. They think it’s negative and they want to hear some positive things. I wish those people would grow up and accept the negative. That’d be the most positive thing I could think of - cowards and fools accepting reality. Learning information and facts that aren’t “positive”.
That would be the most positive change or news I could think of.
I’m so sick of the people who say things are too negative and not positive enough. Why don’t people just ask themselves “is it true?” and then suck it up like an adult?
Why do so many people have this idea that they’re supposed to go through life avoiding negative information? Where did these pathetic cowards get the idea that you can ignore reality if it’s too negative for you?
I see it everywhere all the time with weak men and almost all women. “It’s too negative”.
That was heartbreaking
@joleane, because realism comes in conflict with the lies we tell ourselves and could potentially destroy the fantasy world we all live created for ourselves. Imagine realism applied to your self image. Who in their right mind would want that….
"You don't hear this in a country like the Netherlands because you 're so heavily propagandized" 😂😂😂😂 a good lesson for Paul
John M. is an Evil man! noting he said is truth . I can see who pay him for his propaganda. Russia is Evil. Hizbula is Iran!!, disgusting man! and Europe do need USA.
So what would Mearsheimer say about China and Russia? That they are free and truthful societies? Do you think that a mirror Mearsheimer speaking in those countries would even be allowed to speak?
yeah, propagandized by my dog and the cat. Sure. Blocking this crap

In my entire life, I haven't witnessed poorer governance and gets worse year by year generating unbearable consequences for ordinary citizens and no reverse gear. ⚙️
Am 71 & I have seen a similarly corrupt & ineffective government....the USSR ....we are repeating that catastrophic fall, almost exactly ....but be relieved we will not have to fight the same level of evil the Russians have had to face ....
Realism is still the most moral way to see the world. Thank you prof.
and 48:00 beautifully displays that :)
Come on Don Mauricio, New elections better today than tomorrow and Donald Trump to power!!!
Russia doesn't need to be a regional hegemony. Russia is so vast, with so many resources, it is actually a self sustaining world unto itself.
And it doesn't need any more lands. It needs more PEOPLE, that's why it's liberating the Russian people of Ukraine. Along with the lands where their ancestors have lived for centuries. It would be simply unfair to leave their lands to Ukraine just because they were transferred to "Ukrainian SSR" when that "SSR" was a part of USSR.
The lies about "Russian imperialism" would be laughable if they wouldn't be a base of conflict escalation and couldn't lead to a global war.
@ jmattson98 That's the problem, they want Russia ,they used Ukraina to get Russia.
Russia needs security, though. Russian history has been invasion after invasion, from Napoleon to the Germans (twice). It's kind of amazing how Biden pushed Russia and China together, and is now forcing Iran as well. I honestly don't understand why Biden is literally forcing a China-Russia-Iran alliance against America.
Exactly. There is ntn baltic states have that Russia needs. That’s the reason for having no interest to invade other countries. Not only America doesn’t afraid not to get attacked. Russia also knows that it won’t be ever seriously attacked with having the most developed nuclear weapons and contemporary weapons. Professor is not being truly realistic on that. And spreading a little bit more pro-American point of view. Russia just as like China pretty much a hegemony on their part of the planet.
Russia has to be a regional hegemony because of its enemies.
The interviewer thinking the bombing of the Iranian consulate having generals as even conceivably a valid act of self defense, is truly crazy and a wonder of propaganda success. It is routine for consulates all around the world to safely allow strategists to discuss confidentially foreign relations matters including military topics. They are considered territory of the host and strictly protected under international law. There are military discussions in US consulates all around the world - and daily. If North Korea didn’t like the subject of possible discussions in a US consulate in Australia, and blew it up along with its 14 people and some important US generals, and then a journalist said “But North Korea had a point, as there were likely discussions not friendly to North Korea about expanding AUKUS” then the journalist would be considered insane. How far does our propaganda have to go for it to be considered normal for Israel to blow up.a Iranian consonilate. Crazy times.
Well said
it's decades of brainwashing. the most successful industry of the West, particularly oc US, is the propaganda industry.
there is a joke from the Soviet era :
a Soviet & an American fly to US. the American asks, "Why do you fly to US ?". the Soviet as a response, "To study propaganda". "Propaganda ? There is no propaganda in US", replies the American. the Soviet thereafter, "Exactly !".
Indeed, this guy has clearly been drinking the Zio Kool-Aid😂 He would buy anything that the Zion-tologists are selling.
💯🎯🙌
It's only a clear violation of the Vienna Conventions and an Act of War.
"You can make arguments like that, but in my opinion that's an argument that belies common sense" - Prof. Mearsheimer refuting non-sense in the most polite way possible.
Main looser in the Ukraine conflict has been Germany. Their industry is no more competitive due to high cost of energy.
And the Ukrainian people.
The whole of Europe including the UK . We were warned by American historians and economists that Biden’s sanctions on Russia would all come back on us financially and interview from RT . Another reason they closed them down in U.K. they tell the truth !! As they have been ever since Ukraine were going through civil war ethnically cleansing eastern Ukraines that spoke Russian . There are plenty of graves in the Donbas alone supporting that . Rape Torture and ethnic cleansing by the Ukraine self proclaimed Neo Nazi battalions!
The Ukraine conflict is a loss for everyone except China and American investors.

They’ve put themselves in this position. Don’t get me started on the Zionist angle.

This is a very poor analysis. Those two things are not mutually exclusive.
If I see one guy attack another guy on the street and start punching him, I can decide not to step into the conflict and say that I'm not getting involved in that fist fight while still maintaining that I think it will be bad if the first guy ended up knocking out the second guy and I'm going to give him some tips.
To say that NATO or NATO countries are not direct combatants in the war doesn't preclude the fact that they may very much have an interest in the direction of the war. This is pretty basic politics.

As refreshing as it is to hear the truth from John Mearsheimer, it is equally disappointing to see in our media VERY little being done with this truth. Top US leadership seems to be swimming in "Luxury Beliefs", and remains dangerously incompetent to govern both domestically, and abroad.

I disagree with Mearsheimer on the danger of Europeans splintering without the American security forces. Europe has moved and been able to cooperate. If Asians can cooperate militarily and focus on building economically, why can't Europeans? It sounds like the American pied piper is still blowing its hypnotic tune.
Asia is conpletely splintered thanks to the us pulling half of asia undertheir wing
as a European I thank you for your comment. Maybe Europe needs this "hour of truth" in which real cooperation flourishes. Interesting comment about the American "tune"...
there's that small thing here in Europe no one likes to talk about because it's a bit uncomfortable, you know, after like killing some 40 million people total 80 years ago (while losing 6 million)... DOES ANYBODY REALLY WANT GERMANS TO GEAR UP ONCE AGAIN???? no, not really... we are just beating around the bush like idiots but you know, those BMW, Mercedes etc. assembly lines can be switched to produce tanks in like 5 minutes... and yes, Germany still has those chemical factories that can produce very effective weapons by next Saturday and... I don't want to make it very long, you get the idea... everybody in Europe is like 'let's pretend the US is defending us, let's pretend we are some 6-year-old-schoolgirls', because here in Europe we all know that we are actually fkin animals... and if there were a war now, the whole EU against russia, it would last about 5 days and there would be no russians any more, they would not have even enough time to open the silos for the rockets that carry the nuke warheads...
I'm European and I think Mearsheimer is true. If USA leaves Europe, the old European conflicts (for instance Hungary vs Romania on Transylvania, the disfunctionnal state of Bosnia and Herzegovina that threats to fall apart at any moment or the Kosovo issue) will emerge and given the fact that Europeans will have to handle these old conflicts and will have different opinions on them, tensions would slowly rise and the union would fall apart and be replaced by the old system.
I like his term “threat inflation”
As a French man, I have to object that many, many people are quite fed up with having the leaders of Europe just following US's interests like pets. France has built a defense of its own at great expanse if you consider the very small country that it is regarding Russia, China or indeed the USA. We do have nuclear power, and whilst the Germans did rest under US umbrella and invested in its industry France has build its own fighter plane, special forces, submarines, etc. So I m afraid NO the French claim to have a difference with US's foreign policy, and you shall see the extend of it in the next European elections. Remember, in 2005 the French voted NO to further Eu integration under NATO rule, and it took a betrayal from Sarkosy to overthrow the vote.
As a Brit I am always (well usually) impressed with French policy in this area; it often seems the only country prepared to stand up for European interests. I wish we could create an integrated European military and decouple from the US but we're unfortunately not even close yet I don't think.
@@TheSpoovy Maybe I didn't express myself clear enough, only the politics are keen on the idea to send troops in Ukraine, and not all of them, actually only Macron wants to because he thinks if he heralds the EU flag well enough he can become the 1rst president of the United States of Europe.
I don't want an integrated European military, because first I have zero interest in fighting for countries like Ukraine, or Poland, or Romania, whose feat has been to suck EU money (which came mostly from US, Germany and the UK) to get enough infrastructures so they could take all the industry WE used to have in France; and second I prefer everybody to have a defense of its own, it never prevented us to fight together when needed without having to be enlisted in wars that does NOT concern us. The EU plans to add Georgia, Albania and other countries, when will it end ? Do we French have to be the nuclear umbrella for all these guys ? And what of the not so democratic countries, the corrupt ones ?
We have WAY enough subjects to tackle (including corruption and democracy these days) already, thanks but no thanks.

European countries have formed military and political alliances for centuries before the US even existed, and the idea that getting rid of NATO would take European states to compete with each other is just not true, EU states would be forced to form new alliances with each other as they did in the past, and btw such alliances would be more fruitful and stable than the ones exist today because they would be between countries with similar cultures, interests, and points of view, not like current EU were you have countries with completely different economic mindsets, cultures, and interests forced to exist under the same umbrella i.e. Greece and the Netherlands.

He is unbelievably correct. He wrote about Russia, Ukraine, US, Middle East, Israel.
I dunno. He said Russia had no interest in conquering Ukraine. Then Russia tried to do just that. He says there is no evidence Putin wants to rule Ukraine, yet Putin has written extensively how he believes Ukrainians are not distinct from Russians and Ukraine is just a Russian province. For a realist, he sure seems to be denying a lot of reality.
Was also right about how Israel would respond to Iran's attack on their soil. He said it would be an attack outside of Iranian soil, or if it was Iranian soil, it would be quite limited. The latter was in fact the case.
A small point but just interesting to see it in real time, in a period of days rather than years.

Germany is paying for its stupid policy. You can't sit on two chairs. They should have announced loud and clear - we will not accept Ukraine to NATO. Germany never wanted it anyway. Instead they were flaky and vague (not just them) and did Ukrainians a great disservice by giving them false hope. They also should not have decommisioned their atomic power stations. Germany must play by the rules because it does not have neither brains nor balls to do anything else.
Biden greenlighted the destruction of the Nord Stream pipeline, cutting off Germany from Russia. (Yes, I know there exists a NS I and NS II) Sholtz said, "Thanks, that's fine. May I have another, sir?" Thus, Germany's economic decline.

How can you have positive outcomes if your host is a fatalist with every question?
He just said what he think honestly. Respect.

I'd say there is plenty of evidence that it's mostly a bluff.
The US is in absolutely no place to conduct such a major war over such a long distance. The US is on the brink of internal civil war they can't risk moving the army too far.

The ICJ should be that 'higher authority' and be held in such respect that all states are wary of its disciplinary powers. The only way that can happen is to outlaw complicity in war crimes as well as the governments which commit the war crimes.
Good idea. The ICJ is respected by most countries in the EU, but first you'd have to kick America out of the Security Council
ICJ failed to indite George Bush under pressure from the US. So ICJ is not an independent entity, hence it can't be the higher authority other countries would trust.

Why does US needs to defend Taiwan? For decades, there’s cross strait relationships between both the mainland and the island of Taiwan. As long as US does not interfere in their affairs then there will be peace. China has been very patient and if it wants, it can just embargo Taiwan and that would be disastrous to Taiwan but the Chinese are not that ruthless. No the majority of Chinese and the Taiwanese are not that silly to fight among themselves so that the US MIC can benefit. Ask any Taiwanese and they will tell you that US foreign policies are divisive. For MIC to perpetually make their profits , they will have to create imagery enemies. Yes Prof Mersheimer , I do not agree with him when come to portray the MIC’s status. Even past US President Eisenhower had warned us about the MIC taken control of the US administration, hence the US’ perpetual warsaway from their homelands.
USA has its proxy (ddp) took the power in ROC and they have been educating Taiwanese with fake history and is going to form Taiwanese nationalist to confront Chinese nationality preparing for the separation from China. This is what US can use when time is right to burst a conflict across strait. That is why president Ci met ex-president Ma yin-jiu call for Chinese nationality recognition among Taiwanese. It can be treat as the last peace call from China and it seems not promising
The US is only trying to hold China off just long enough to bring that new microchip factory on line on American soil, and as soon as they do, the US won't give a damn about Taiwan. Control of Taiwan by China would cripple the US's manufacturing ability involving anything that has a microchip in it; that's the ONLY reason that they're backing those guys.

The USD % of global trade is steadily dropping and the point is to circumvent the US use of currency for economic war and sanctions. It's totally essential for countries to have alternatives in order to be sovereign and not under the US thumb.
The result for America will be complete economic collapse and many regional wars as States battle for power
As long as the dollar is the default currency for world trade it is not easy to circumvent it: your trading partners will not accept other currencies because their partners also want dollars. And the dollar will remain the default currency for a long time because there is no replacement - the euro is big enough but the euro zone is an unstable construct, the yen is small and the renmibi is not fully convertible due to Chinese capital controls. (The ruble is both small and not fully convertible) Maybe one day the Indian rupee could replace it if and when India becomes rich and a global power. But that's quite far.
@@balazshorvath3736 The US percentage of global trade is steadily dropping regardless, that's just as an undeniable fact, just as that the west is failing in Ukraine as they did in Afghanistan.
@@mark_2 To be the reserve currency the country of the currency needs to have a large economy so that the money supply is also large but beyond that its share in world trade is irrelevant. As the US is certainly big enough, its share in world trade is not hugely important because it is not only the US trade that counts.
It would be impossible or at least very costly for trading partners/banks to have on stock all the world’s currencies. Eg assume that the Saudi oil company sells oil to 50 other small countries (bunch of African and Asian small countries) It is not possible that each of these trades happen in 50 different currencies or in the Saudi currency. Even if it were possible it is inefficient and costly. Take a Saudi - Ethiopia transaction as an example : there is no liquid market for the Saudi - Ethiopian currencies. However there is a liquid market between the Saudi currency and the dollar as well as between the Ethiopian currency and the dollar. So they price the contract in dollars, which makes the trade possible: the Ethiopians can get USD for their currency, buy the oil and the saudis can change back the received USD to Saudi currency.
This the point: the status of the dollar as a reserve currency is not directly dependent on the share of the US in world trade because trades not involving the US also need a reserve currency as a medium. Only the currencies of big economies can play this role (but their share of world trade is not critical). The only three big enough currencies are the USD, renminbi and the euro but the latter two cannot be reserve currencies for the reasons mentioned (instability for euro, lack of full convertibility for the renminbi)
@@mark_2It's an undeniable fact, but changing the world economy is like a turning around a superheavy tanker: it takes time. And politics can change dramatically over that time. What is now me vs. you can turn into us vs. them by the time the balance has shifted enough.

It looks like this guy (John) lives in a different world very far from reality. Such "reputable experts" misinterpreted a number of terrible events which recently happened in this world, including the war in Ukraine, Israel-Palestinian conflict, etc. The majority of them predicted that Ukraine would fail in 3 days. Some psychologists call this "inertia of mind". You can clearly see that he is completely confused about so called "capability" whether it is a military or political capability. It looks like he interprets "capability" as something static. Think about the 2ndWW how the capability of the Soviet Union had changed/evolved from the beginning of the war... it resulted in halve of Europe being under the Soviet rule. He does not understand the post-soviet states and has no idea about what kind of proclamations Russia makes, what is happening inside Russia in terms of their war propaganda that targets even kindergarten kids, what ther schoolbooks teach kids about. They teach about fighting and present the West as an enemy to get them ready to fight. John completely ignores international laws and the rights of independent countries when talking about Ukraine. What about people in Ukraine and their suffering? What about Budapest memorandum on security Assurances for Ukraine that was signed by the US and other countries? In return Ukraine gave up its nuclear weapons which was the 3rd nuclear arsenal in the world! He ignores a number of facts that USA is not as strong as it used to be, that there are a number of destabilising political and economic processes taking place inside the US that might lead to loosing their hegemon position in this world. 🤔 This world is not static, we can see how it is changing right now. Brutal sadistic power, such as Russia with its allies are which persecute their own people and lead absolutely terrible war against Ukrainians, should be stopped before it ignites 3rdWW and the whole world is involved in it.
40 years in the financial industry taught me that cooperation, rather than competition, is the key factor for success. This also applies to nations.
Great wisdom
(Neocapitalist, neomodernist) Financial profit is objective, nations' aspirations, convictions and beliefs are necessarily subjective and will only and forever generate diversity, competition and conflict.
Economics and geopolitics are two completely different realms!
And as the Pr. explained: "economic survival" is of a fundamentally different nature than that of a "political survival" so to speak.
The game theory also proved the same, alas...
It's called _coopetition_ . Compete yes, but not to the extent that you can't cooperate when necessary. Even big technology companies cooperate more than most people imagine. They're in many working groups together, to develop standards etc.
That sounds like Communism rather than Capitalism...

The worst thing happening to Europe right now is continued NATO presence. The best thing that can happen to us is the dissolution of NATO, even if that means a fractured European foreign policy. The latter does not endanger us, since Russia never was a threat since 1991 and isn´t a threat now. US foreign policy has led us to disaster, only a few short decades after the end of the Cold War, and our reaction to this will be reflected in upcoming EU and national elections.
