Hey everyone :) Welcome to the banjo ranks! I'm Banjo Jen - a singer-songwriter from Sheffield in the UK. I don't really play loads of old tunes (even though they're cool) and I don't focus overly on too much theory or technical aspects. But I use the wonderful frailing banjo style to play and create songs, and - most importantly - to play for fun. So I hope that I can help you to do the same thing and get enjoyment out of this fab instrument if you're just starting out (just be aware you will always be the butt of jokes in folk music circles if you play the banjo!). Please join me in the uphill struggle to make banjo cool!
If you're interested in my original singer-songwriter material, please check out my website www.banjojen.com and subscribe to my main CZcams channel / banjojen . Thank you :)

This was nothing short of amazing. I got into Banjo to get closer to my ancestors and to have you pick a planation song and be able to learn it means the world to me. Thanks Banjo Jen!

Just been learning from your lessons for a couple of weeks, I can play Cripple Creek okay for a minute or two - but I need a cold compress on my forehead after attempting this lesson. When I asked my thumb to hit the string one extra time it was like it had a seizure and hit it about 16 times in a nanosecond. I'll practice Cripple Creek a bit more tonight and maybe come back to this one at the weekend. I was doubtful that I could learn even one tune from watching a video (without anything written down) but the way you sang the rhythm made it almost instinctive, so thanks.

Oh Banjojen where have you gone? I truly miss your videos. I find your style of teaching very effective. I know these take a lot of work, and sometimes it feels like just pushing shit out into the void so why bother, but there are a lot of us out here who truly appreciate your tutorials.
I hope this little note finds you well. And look forward to a time when you are able to post more.

Got my banjo a couple of weeks ago (having been following Patrick C over the last year). Really finding your break downs useful. Please keep it up and many thanks!

@@digitaldemocracyai-rob Going well, thanks. Having trouble singing and playing at same time, but playing is definitely improving rapidly. Shame though, that Patrick C has taken all his material down, though I'm sure it will still be accessible somewhere at some point. But, I think I may have found the right instrument for me...

Hi Jen, just a quick question... can you tell me what brand of nail strengthener you use. As now I'm getting faster with my bum tiddies, I'm going wear my nail out.

It's interesting to me.. because I feel like to play the rhythm of so many other songs that are not "banjo" songs per say, I naturally double thumb to do it. Feels like there is no other way.. the boom dity rhythm doesn't work with every song.. especially if your feeling the rhythm.. which I do. as I am also a drummer. It's hard to play boom dity for me in some songs that don't equate to that rhythm.. I just feel it in a claw hammer bouncy way! Just saying!
