- In this episode we move on to techniques with the fretboard hand. Hammer-ons, pull-offs and slides are three techniques that add so much flavour and fullness to this style of playing. So play around and have fun with them :)

Hey everyone :) Welcome to the banjo ranks! I'm Banjo Jen - a singer-songwriter from Sheffield in the UK. I don't really play loads of old tunes (even though they're cool) and I don't focus overly on too much theory or technical aspects. But I use the wonderful frailing banjo style to play and create songs, and - most importantly - to play for fun. So I hope that I can help you to do the same thing and get enjoyment out of this fab instrument if you're just starting out (just be aware you will always be the butt of jokes in folk music circles if you play the banjo!). Please join me in the uphill struggle to make banjo cool!
If you're interested in my original singer-songwriter material, please check out my website www.banjojen.com and subscribe to my main CZcams channel / banjojen . Thank you :)

And finally, always remember …pick tunes not fights!

So inspiring! Your lessons sent me on my way to make music the first time in my life! Thanks a lot!
I wish I had discovered Jen when I started, brilliant teacher, enthusiasm and simplicity, she does get really it across.
Finally lessons that joyfully help the technical pcs work together...THX !
I have been following along with your lessons from Canada and I am learning so much from you. You explain things in a very natural and welcoming way. Thank you so much for passing on your significant skills.
Thank you so much for these lessons. I have been working on learning banjo (mainly bluegrass) for ages and have just switched to frailing. I love your methodology of not playing from tabs and for the first time I am working out where to put those hammer-ons and slides for myself instead of relying on notation telling me what to do. You are a fabulous teacher.
This is just what I need at this point in time. THANK YOU!😊
Great lesson! You’re the best at explaining!! Do more!!
this video makes everything blossom!
You are an excellent teacher. I have been playing for about a year but the way you explain things is so refreshing and freeing. I learned cripple creek almost instantly from you and it sounds great because I got into the groove of it. Then I watched this lesson which really helps me understand how to mix things up and not be monotonous. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
That's great to hear! Thank you so much for the donation :)
Your teachings are amazing! I've learned so much as a beginner because of you! You are an inspiration! Thank you, Jen!
Thank you Jen for the whole set of lessons on Frailing Banjo, I've only just got to lesson 2 so far, but you get everything across to us all so very clearly, You are a superb source of inspiration to keep people like me who are just starting out on the Banjo journey to keep on trying to learn to play this wonderful instrument, please keep em coming.
Thanks for this great lesson, Jen! I appreciate the time you take to explain everything so well, and the examples you give!!
I love when you sing what to do ,it really makes it easy for me ,because you are telling while showing thanks heaps
Thanks Jen. I played guitar before I came to banjo, and am having such fun with your tutorials. You do a good job of breaking things down, and I like that you give a concept and then use a more recognizable tune to set it in.... Cool, thanks!
Thanks Jen, just started with a banjo and your tutorials are so good. Struggling with that full D chord though, so doing the easier power chord you suggested. Just can’t get my ring finger down far enough. Brilliant tuition, thanks again
Ye old donut group that Patrick C kept going is watching your vids! Love them!
You are great I have really enjoyed your lessons thanks
Your tutorials are amazing! Thank you for making these I’ve learned so much from you from scratch already!
Thank you
bril as usual.........
HAIL YEA 🙏🏼😎🤘🏽🪕🖤🩶🤍 this is what i’ve been looking for. there are plenty of incredible banjo players out there like you, but you are the best banjo teacher i’ve seen on youtube. it’s so easy to follow with clear and concise instructions/suggestions. it’s laid out in a way that comes together in a way that there’s just endless possibilities with what you’ve gone through in just this one video alone. thank you so very much. you frailed it… i mean nailed it. same thing 🤷🏼♂️

Any suggestions on how to get the right hand to quit stopping every time the left does something other than play a chord, weeks of practice and no improvement that I can see?
I’d say try to do the frailing strum just in G without anything with the left hand for a while, then when you’re really in the groove and in time keep looking at the right hand but throw in the hammer-on on the string you’re striking. The brain often will focus on what it sees, so if you’re looking at the left hand that might be why the right hand pauses. Try having the left hand positioned over the string you’re going to hammer on or slide so it’s ready to go without having to look at it. Might help!
