    Hey everyone :) Welcome to the banjo ranks! I'm Banjo Jen - a singer-songwriter from Sheffield in the UK. I don't really play loads of old tunes (even though they're cool) and I don't focus overly on too much theory or technical aspects. But I use the wonderful frailing banjo style to play and create songs, and - most importantly - to play for fun. So I hope that I can help you to do the same thing and get enjoyment out of this fab instrument if you're just starting out (just be aware you will always be the butt of jokes in folk music circles if you play the banjo!). Please join me in the uphill struggle to make banjo cool!
    If you're interested in my original singer-songwriter material, please check out my website www.banjojen.com and subscribe to my main CZcams channel / banjojen . Thank you :)

    Thank you for the cool lesson. I love this song and you show how easy it is render it with clawhammer. The explanations are clear. It helps that you have a great voice and frailing style. Good luck with your own songs.

    This, BTW was one of my favorite jam tunes when I played with my old group in Lancaster, who I let the music up to our banjo and guitar player, and I played washboard and harp. Now that I have moved, looking for a new jam group and am getting into banjo myself, I really wanted to learn this tune myself, thanks for breaking it down. I appreciate your putting the riffs into chord context.

    Jen, I think it would be cool to hear some of your banjo songs you have come up with. I like your teaching style its easy to follow and seems down to earth which helps. It's cool to see someone from the UK into this type of music. I'm from Texas and New Mexico and I spent some time in Uffington which is where White Horse hill is. I was an Au pair for like 6 months or so. Did a poor job of it and ruined some good friendships in the process.. It would be the best thing ever to be able to go back up there at night and play some banjo tunes. I honestly doubt I'm welcome back there though..dangit. The UK just has a different feel to it I guess, But anyway to the point of my story, you would have been perfect for Gifford's Circus that year because it was Western themed.

    Another awesome vid. Stopped half way through and working on the tune for a few days. But will be back once the basic structure is down to work on fiddly bits up the frets. One thing I have found (not sure if it’s because I came to Banjo from guitar) on the last power D I naturally want to add a couple of quick bends on both fingers in time with rhythm.

    • @frailingatlife7755
      @frailingatlife7755  Před 3 lety

      Ah cool - definitely add some bends! I'm not very good at them (maybe because I'm hopeless at guitar!) but they'd definitely work. Specially in the bluesy verse option (you may not have got to that bit yet, towards the end of the vid).

    • @ThePiercedOne
      @ThePiercedOne Před 3 lety

      @@frailingatlife7755 it just makes it easier in my head to add stuff once I can play the basic structure backwards. I’ve got some of the slides and hammer on in but one step at a time. you’ve made it really accessible to experiment around and having natural cut off points means there are natural (wether intended on not) goal points through each vid so one vid turns into 2-3 parts to work on. That’s what I’m enjoying about your vids.

    • @frailingatlife7755
      @frailingatlife7755  Před 3 lety +1

      @@ThePiercedOne thanks so much for the feedback. I'm really glad the videos are accessible, that was my aim just to put a few things up that could hopefully help people take it steady but feel like it's possible to keep building on things. You're doing it totally the right way getting the main structure down first - the biggest mistake people always make is trying to jump into more fiddly things before feeling confident with the basics.

    • @ThePiercedOne
      @ThePiercedOne Před 3 lety

      @@frailingatlife7755 it’s been great, especially over lockdown (even though I’ve still been working throughout), it’s rekindled the motivation to progress and learn some new tunes and in doing so given some welcome distraction from the real world. Also has introduced me not just your music but other artists through the “you may also like” suggestions on Apple Music. Once the world is back together me and wife will deffo be getting to one of your gigs! Keep it up, it genuinely makes a difference, there’s not enough recognition for those sharing skills online throughout all this.

    Question. Is there never an up stroke on the frailing? I have played guitar ( and other stringed instruments) for years, finger style. I have played the banjo for the last 30 years, accompanying myself with my own made up hybrid picking style. I thought I would try learning the correct way to play 😂 needless to say, I'm finding it difficult to lose all my free style picking habits.
