  • Hi Guys! Today I'm back with a PSA reveal which centers around the 1989 Upper Deck baseball set. I submitted these cards over a year ago when PSA prices for these cards were $12 each. Feel free to let me know what you think down below!

    The Griffey 1989 Upper Deck is the most iconic baseball card of that era. No one thought that it was going to single-handedly pay for their retirement with it though. It was just highly sought after and if there was a single baseball card of a player who was active that everyone wanted, it was that one. I'd say that the best way to describe it in modern terms would be like a Luka Doncic Prizm rookie multiplied by 10,000.
    Also, both the Dale Murphy and Gary Sheffield cards that you graded have error variations. The Murphy is a reverse negative and you can tell by the bat and because the Braves logos on his hat and shirt are backward. The Sheffield error is that the "SS" position in the top right is upside down on the error version.

      Good to know! I wasn’t even alive then, so good to get a different perspective. The Luka rookie seems like a really good comparison.
      Thanks for info on the Murphy and Sheffield as well. I looked up the errors/variations when I subbed, but had forgotten about them now

      The Griffey was out before grading or just at the start of grading so everyone was trading raw copies. The most expensive I ever remember that card getting to raw was $150. Junk wax cards never even came close to the prices we see today

    I still find it tons of fun watching grading reveals of the junk wax era cards! When psa was at $6-$8 per card for bulk it was worth it to grade tons of these cards from that era. It would be tough to turn a profit even at $18 per card, but if you enjoy the hobby and like to grade your own card $10 per card would be the price point we need to be at. The Nolan Ryan PSA 10 throwing the football was a very popular card when it was released in 1989.

    • @lococardcollector7901
      @lococardcollector7901 Pƙed rokem

      Yeah sometimes cards are just iconic even though it’s not a rookie. I think Ryan hit 5000Ks right around that time. His RC was through the roof. I think it was more of a chase card than the Griffey when the Griffey was at its hottest

    Fun reveal! The 1989 Topps Traded sealed sets in both baseball & football are affordable and fun to sub when PSA fees are low. They can be quite profitable if you pull 10s on the notable rookies (Griffey and Johnson in the baseball set, Deion, Barry, Aikman, Derrick Thomas and Steve Atwater in football).

      I actually bought 5 Topps Traded sets in 2008 for $5 each, 1989 Football. I got one Barry Sanders 10 and 2 Deion 10s, I paid $14 per card to grade in 2020

    • @DarrylMonroe24
      @DarrylMonroe24 Pƙed rokem

  • @josephgomez7368
    @josephgomez7368 Pƙed rokem +1

    So once Upper Deck printed sets without a limit, it killed the Griffey price , 8 is pretty standard . Off to Burbankcards with the junk wax or COMC

  • @odeed
    @odeed Pƙed rokem +2

    I think the issue with grading junk wax is the difference between the value of a 10 vs. an 8 or 9 can be hundreds, of dollars, and more often than not with junk wax you will get an 8 or a 9. Although with that being said if you send in certain cards to PSA at their current $30 value tier like that Ken Griffey and you get a 9, then you've done pretty well. So I think you have to be very selective in what you send in, and make sure the cards you are sending in are very clean.

    • @TRIKE415SportsCards
      @TRIKE415SportsCards  Pƙed rokem +1

      Very well said. I think you have to be selective with what you send in especially at $30 a pop.
      There’s an argument to be made though that if you can get them graded at $12 each like these were, it’s kind of worth rolling the dice to hope to get some 9’s and 10’s. Downside isn’t too bad on most cards in an 8, still worth like $10.
      However, with this submission (where I feel I did fairly well grade wise) I still probably would only break even after fees and shipping and everything.

  • @T-TiiMe
    @T-TiiMe Pƙed rokem +1

    This is cool and something I've always wondered too. It really shows just how important the grading fee is. ($30 - probably a little too rich for my blood, but if grading at PSA settles in around $12-$15, there starts to become a lot of nice plays you can make.) ... just my two cents.

    • @TRIKE415SportsCards
      @TRIKE415SportsCards  Pƙed rokem +1

    • @cardboardcheddah3715
      @cardboardcheddah3715 Pƙed rokem

      When the price point gets too low the market becomes over saturated with cheap product. Just keep the cards raw if we can’t afford the grading service. Cheap grading service isn’t a window to make a few bucks off fellow collectors,imo.

  • @weekendroady2060
    @weekendroady2060 Pƙed rokem

    Just got a similar order back from psa. I had a $12 per card "modern" order hung up for 16 months! Sent 23 cards, and PSA lost one of them (no joke, thankfully it was only a 1991 skybox scottie pippen).
    Got 14 10's, 7 9's and one 8 with a colored border that clearly had a dinged corner that was absolutely psa's fault - never would have sent the card in as such. One thing I'd say is look over each card multiple times and be incredibly conservative with your estimates, even when opening sealed sets and checking those cards.

    If this was back when PSA sub was cheap then it’s a good sub for those kind of cards.
    Great content as always Troy. 👍

    @ACD1994 Pƙed rokem

    People were hoping the Ken Griffey Jr. Would be the next Mickey Mantle rookie card, though, the Mantle is, obviously a lot older, and cards weren't protected back then...the print production also way too high with the junk wax era, but still one of the more iconic cards.

    Yeah, these are junk wax not 1950s cards. You need 10s to have any real value. Most of those cards should not have been sent in if they had a chance at an 8. I think you took a loss on grading fees my man. Those Upper Deck 8s will be tough to sell. Good video though. Not tryin' to hate.
