The linked video was done for a movie, but it illustrates what Minimum Interval Take Off (MITO) meant during the Cold War. These B-52s took off from the same runway 15 seconds apart. They immediately peal off in different directions to evade incoming Russian nukes. The black exhaust is unburned fuel from the water injection use to get extra thrust for takeoff. czcams.com/video/Cq6Hpxyrhyo/video.html

I grew up as the son of a KC-135 pilot and heard my dad talk of Minimum interval take off. He said after the 3rd take off the remaining planes took off on instruments for lack of visibility.

First thing I noticed was the F-16s taking off, weren’t the ones that taxied out. I guess you use the footage you can get.😄
Having years of experience on the F-16, I can definitely appreciate the MITO takeoffs! We would do what we called a “surge”. 4 sorties with a “hot-pit” between them. Refuel & reload with engine running and pilot in the seat. Amazing aircraft!

Yea, taking off from South Carolina and escorting TU-95s near Iceland (see how the background changes.) Also some of the aircraft tail numbers changed - so essentially a spliced together clips. But, does show what goes into launching an aircraft. A real scramble would be much shorter and a lot of these steps would have been done ahead of tim.@@IrLosin

    • @maryshafer
      @maryshafer Před 3 měsíci +1

Trust me, this was quick. I've been on the flight line for an SR-71 launch and it took 37 mins from pilot entry to brake release on the runway. About 15 minutes at Last Chance. The aircraft was clean and ready to go at pilot entry, no flags to pull. The best bit is when they pressurize the fuel tanks and the Blackbird starts pouring fuel and splashes down the taxiway.

Amazing that it "only" took 3.5 minutes to get on the runway when they're intercepting enemy aircraft. Not to mention, the planes in the hangar had no armament on them but they were loaded for bear when they got airborne. When did they have time to load the missiles between when they left the hangar and when the got on the runway for take-off? Oh yeah, the swept wing design of the aircraft flying with the bombers is indicative of the Tomcat, not the F16.

How come the pilots are in a semi-rush rush and the ground crew is very casual before takeoff?

Not to burst someones bubble but those we're not the same clips, and also I do think the F-16's in the start would want some form of A-A missile no?
also the intercepted video were 2 F-22 and not F-16

oops.. they forgot their arms.. no missiles? then the ones in the air have them.. must have been magic? maybe just title the video correctly? still cool to watch them fly

That's an intercept scramble? God, it took forever just to start up, let alone taxi out to the duty runway! If I'm coming in to hit that base, I'd be wondering why they're even trying. That base would be smoking wreck before anybody got off the ground.
[I did this back in the day.
When on alert, we had everything preset, saved time, and the crew chief was already spooling up the engine as I climbed up. He got out with butt hitting sear right after. He harnesses me up, and I'm getting my helmet on: at that point from the sound of the alert, 45 seconds.
We were set up near the duty runway and were rolling in two minutes.
Every year the USAF and the Candian Airforce hold a competition to see who can set the best scramble time. Post that instead of this nonsense.

Umm. They must have met Santa Claus as they took off and he gave them some rockets for their wing tip hard points. Or maybe they stopped at the missile store between moving out of their nest and the runway.

Why don't the have any missiles on their wings if they're going to intercept Russian jets? Im confused! When preparing for take off I didn't see any missiles on their wings.

I saw nuke interceptors turning at George AFB in the early 70s. Pilot in the bird. Armed nuke. Hot refuled.. ready to roll, launch and lob at incoming ICBMs. Crude tactic.
