On Stella di Napoli (Star of Naples), the American mezzo-soprano’s creamy tone and dramatic prowess breathe new life into little-known arias by Mercadante, Michele Carafa (a student of Cherubini and close friend of Rossini), Carlo Valentini and the prolific opera composer Giovanni Pacini, whose Stella di Napoli (1845) gives the album its title. Joyce worked closely with Italian conductor Riccardo Minasi (whose previous projects include Bellini’s Norma with Cecilia Bartoli) to bring three unjustly neglected arias to light in new editions and world premiere recordings. Alongside these little-known gems, Joyce presents a sumptuous Bel Canto banquet with music by the three greats - Bellini, Rossini and Donizetti - including the latter’s Maria Stuarda: a tour-de-force signature role for Joyce.

what a brilliant woman that is, beautiful voice, beautiful mind, intelligent, convincing - a joy - thank you for that!
The greatest mezzo alive without a doubt!
WOW! Absolutely THRILLING!!! Yeah, Joyce, rock on with your Bel Canto Self!!
Still my favorite album of hers. It is so beautiful!
I'm going right now to get this album-her voice is beyond exquisite...
Stella di Napoli--my favorite album of my favorite mezzo
I bought the Stella di napoli CD as soon as I saw it on Amazon. I really enjoyed the excerpts. What marvellous singing. Great trills & runs. I played the CD right through & I would call Di Donato La Stella del Mondo! I have recordings by Schumann Heink & Onegin , but great as they were to my knowledge they never ventured into this fearsome repertoire. Bravissima Joyce!!! Henry Webb Pontypool Wales
Oh my goodness! This might just top Drama Queens, though that is hard to imagine. So can't wait to get this!

She's singing part of Maria Stuarda's final aria here -- I guess that means Stuarda was first performed in Naples? --- Yup, Grove's says "composed for Naples, 1834, banned by censor" [!]. What, because of the beheading? Hope to see Joyce sing this again -- she was superb in two Berlin performances.
Banned because of the language in the confrontation scene, calling Elisabeth an unworthy harlot and a bastard.
You go girl! I'm practicing too :)
yes yes yes
what is the name first aria?
Did she wear a Mary Katrantzou dress?
to larisa teslenko Di Donato is better than good. She is outstanding among today's singers . Except maybe for Elina Garanca
