Super demo, I have two outboards 9.5 HP, one 1970 Evinrude the other a 1969 Johnson both exhibiting the same issue, both stuttering on low idle. Gracias for sharing.

I finished the rebuild. I didn't have acetone. I just used carb cleaning spray. Assembled based on this video. There were some minor differences, but for the most part this video was most helpful. After I installed the carb, primed the motor, and just 3 pulls of the cord, purred like a kitten. Thanks for posting. Subscribed
Just a little tip. For 71 Johnson 9.5's the rubber o ring goes in the place where the packings go

From my understanding, there were two low speed adjustment styles. One type was the type in this video (early model years) and the other is a flex shaft. I'm guessing that's why the gaskets/rings are different. I haven't tried yet but just by looking at it I'm almost positive I won't be able to fit those little rings into mine which is the flex shaft style and when I took it out there was no o-rings/gaskets that were in there which made me a little concerned at first but now that I think about it I think it makes sense if they were different styles and I have the different style.
Thanks a ton for the great video. I had some trouble with the slow speed needle nut or whatever you’d call it. I tightened it way too much at first and mushroomed those felt washers to the point that the needle couldn’t fit through them. Stretched the felts out and got the needle seated. Engine fires up now but doesn’t run for long. Just ordered a new needle off eBay cuz mine is a little dented looking. Hope the new one helps. Anyways thanks again!
Excellent, I wasn't' aware of the arrangement for the four small gaskets, thanks. I used carb cleaner instead of acetone. Works well too.

You can make a 90 degree pick out of a small nail. Take 2 pliers and grab and bend the end

You forgot one of the most important parts of cleaning or rebuilding that particular style carb. There is a jet behind that drain plug on the bowl that must be removed and cleaned. It causes more problems than all that stuff you replaced and cleaned. It has to be pristine clean on those motors or it'll cause problems. Carb kit should have come with it.
Is it a little black plastic tube? Cause thats all I have left for parts in the kit
No, it's a screw in brass jet. If you unscrew the drain plug on the bowl and look way back in the hole you can see it. You have to have a narrow screwdriver to get it out.

Where exactly is the main or high speed jet. Obviously it’s not adjustable, but I have mine apart right now and don’t find the HS jet…
Great video. You should do a video on how to assemble the gear shaft of a 1957 evinrude. I took all the gears and stuff off and cannot remember how to re assemble it and the diagrams never make sense to me. I watched your other video on full foot rebuild but there were some places where you didn't show the parts well and I got lost.

Thanks for the video. It was a great help. My original float pin, never had the shepherd hook spring.Also on the side of the carburetor you can see where they put small pieces of lead to fill in small holes. There are at least two holes in the carburetor, that seem to go straight through to the inside. Just wondering, if these holes should also be filled?

good video..my throttle adjuster was a little different..it had a rubber o ring insted of the four gaskets..maybe someone changed it in the past
Duane Anderson later models from 68 and up use the rubber the 64 you do 1 plastic 2felt 1 plastic they kinda suck getting them in
do you have a video showing how to set the carb once its on the boat. I have one i am tryng to get t run well for my works saftey boat but cant get it to run without the choke being on.
Ok maybe you can help. Got a 68 9.5 so when i got it would run but only on choke. Rebuilt carb, new fuel pump new tank and lines. It will fire up and idle no problem but if you put it in gear it will stall and die unless you hit the choke closed then it will run. Just not great. At idle and half throttle it will run without choke. I thought maybe fuel starving somehow.
Thanks for the video, my kit came with a brass washer and thick rubber o-ring you didn't mention but I thought I saw on your workbench as well as a third plastic washer as idle needle packibg. are these extra parts? Or something I missed or...
Someone else commented and said the newer models like have a flexible cable adjustment idle screw instead of the solid brass one in this video. The flexible cable models use the fat rubber black o-ring instead of the four stacked washers that were shown in this video

I have a 1966 and when I removed the bigger cap, there is a plastic piece inside. Do I remember that piece? It's got those little holes blocked off .
Does the shepherds hook come for the float and needle valve come in the rebuild kit? I didnt see on when i broke mine down. great video
Good question. The shepherd hook does typically come in the rebuild kit. I can't remember an instance where it did not. Thank you!

Can you please confirm that the shepherd's hook spring was NOT originally in the carb?
Did you just replace the old core plugs, the ones you drilled to pull out?
+Dan A, yes the new core plugs come in the rebuild kit. You reinstall them using a hammer and a blunt object. When you dimple the center with the hammer the plug expands causing an interference fit.
I have a 72 9.5, you called the brass rod a idle screw, mine is different it's a flexible wire of sorts and on the front motor housing it is labeled rich and lean... is this the same thing? Sorry im new to outboard motors

You forgot to take the high-speed jet out from under the drain screw in the lower half of the carburetor
I think the real high-speed jets are the friends we make along the way

I ordered the kit that you listed and when it came in it had another gasket and a screen. where do they go? I was thinking they went between the block and the carb but from your video they are shaped differently. thanks
Without seeing the parts its hard for me to tell. Do you see the part on this diagram? You can search the page for "screen"

I don't see it in the diagram. If you look on the amazon link it is the cork gasket under the black rubber carb gasket. There is a screen that is the same shape. It has a crescent type shape cut out of it. Thanks!
I’ve slept since then and I don’t remember using those parts. I also don’t see them on this diagram that includes the intake detail.

June 2018. I recently picked up a '71 Johnson 9.5 hp 9R71R. Have read that the float in the carb is coated with shellac and that todays fuel with ethanol will dissolve the shellac. Should this be a concern? The kits I have found all have the OEM floats and I am guessing they are coated with shellac also. Your comments appreciated. Thanks, dm
Dick Madison yes the floats that come in the kits are the shelac’d cork floats. Ethanol, over time, will gum up the carburetor in general. My recommendation is to simply use non-ethanol gas, if you can. If you can’t use non-ethanol gas then I recommend adding some sort of fuel treatment to your gas such as SeaFoam treatment or Stabil.

Thanks for the quick response. There is no ethanol fuel anywhere to be found in the Dallas area that I can locate. I am wondering if airplane fuel contains it. I will check with some of the smaller airports. I had injector problems with a '12 Chevy Tahoe and tried several tanks with both Techron and SeaFoam without much luck. Then found an Amsoil dealer and after 2 tanks of fuel using their Pi additive, the rough idle and mileage improved. I use Stabil in both of my atvs and it seems to have made a difference and other than starting them occasionally, they have not been ridden in 5 years. One has injection and one is carbed. I will give those a try again with the little engine that could. Thanks a million. dm
Dick Madison no problem. if you rebuild the carb and clean it real good you should be good to go for a while unless you let it sit for a while with ethanol gas in it

On the other type Johnson Evinrude carb kits yes however, since the 9.5s are so unique I don’t think I had any extra pieces. It’s been a while though...can you describe the remaining parts?

Don Gesswin yeah, I forgot about the cork gasket. You don’t need that part. I can’t rightly remember what it was for but you don’t need it.

So I'm having a issues with my carb it leaks gas when running from a hole in the top half flywheel side. Has anyone had this problem before?
Yes I had that problem but I think the shepherds hook spring and float setting is what takes care of that. Thankfully he goes over both of those.
This is about the weirdest looking carb I've ever come across. The whole motor, really. There is one on my shop right now. The problem with this motor is, to do anything to it, you need to remove the flywheel. This guy's flywheel has had the puller bolt holes torn out of it! This happens because someone tries to use an impact gun to operate the puller. NEVER bring an impact, anywhere near any part of any outboard!! Now, I have to deal with it. It sux because if I can't remove this flywheel, this perfectly working motor will be garbage.
