10:24 the World Cup is once every 4 years, so it being 38% is very high.
Either that stat is wrong or there very much is a correlation between the balon d’or and being a World Cup winner.

I've only considered years where a World Cup has taken place for that category. Same goes for Copa America/UEFA Euro/AFCON. It is high, I agree. But it's not a certainty for the winner.
It's funny you mention that (Im about to contradict myself). I forgot to include it in the video, but the number should be higher. For years such as 1978, 86, 58, 62 and more, the best players in the world were considered to be on the World Cup winning teams- South Americans.

Not really Harvey Barnes scored more than Son last season... NO ONE would say Barnes is better. So it's not JUST stats.
On the other hand Salah scored nearly 4x what Grealish did but Jack got 3 trophies which he was key to and Salah won none... but no one would say Grealish is better than Salah.
It's a balance. Like Mbappe people like to say but he plays in the French league ect ect but he won Monacos first league title for 17 years as a kid... he SINGLE handedly knocked out Argentina in the Russia World Cup and scored in the final... He INDIVIDUALLY led PSG scoring multiple goals against Bayern, Real and Barca ect in the champions league.
Then you have him again leading france to the WC final for the second time in a row scoring a hattrick in the final...
If HYPOTHETICALLY mbappe scores 25 in a season but Vini scores 30 it's ridiculous to say Vini is now better...
Now if Mbappe is injured or has a horrible season like not winning the league not being crucial for his team and vini scores 30 winning what he needs to win it's fair to say Vini not only had a better season but that mbappe because of his disastrous season can't rely on his overall career to balance it out. Meaning Vini would be the better player until Mbappe shows he can get back to his level.

@@skp8748 I'm not arguing against there being more to a player than stats.
But I will say that there are pretty advanced metrics that can explain why a player is more valuable than another player beyond goal tally or trophy cabinet size. I think that if stats are used correctly, they can get closer to telling the whole story than many may think.
And if those stats say that Barnes out-performed Son for a season, then I think he should rank higher than him for that season.
That being said, I don't think the stats say that. Although I heard Son had a rough time at the beginning of the year.

@@dimithriw3357this persistent myth about Haaland ghosting in big games really needs to stop.
      1. He had several shots on target in the final that Onana had to pull legit miracles to save. Same happened against Real, if it wasn’t for Curtois being as good as he is, the scote would’ve been 8-0 rather than 4-0.
      2. Him drawing defenders away and creating space for his teammates is the reason they got to score the winning goals in the first place. You can not tell me Silva would’ve been able to score the brace against Madrid if it wasn’t for Haaland being double teamed.
      3. In every other big game of the season - Arsenal, Manchester United, Liverpool, Bayern - Haaland has scored. He’s the reason they got to the final in the first place. Should we simply discount that because he had a few mediocre games in an otherwise excellent season? Kevin De Bruyne said it best: “People expect Erling to score hat-tricks every match, when his average is one goal per game.”

@@flapp-jck1226 The thing with the 2010 award is that it was a completely different scenario if you look at things as a whole. People don't argue that you should only look at the WC, but that the WC has a much bigger weight than anything else.
      1) In 2010, Messi was just a completely different breed of a player, there is no way you can compare 2010 Messi with current year Haaland. Messi dominated any and all aspects of the game, while Haaland, as good as he is, is mostly regarded as the best goalscorer.
      2) Iniesta back in 2010, was definitely a key player for that Spain National Team, however, you can't forget about Xavi, Casillas, Villa, etc. Every player in that National team was pretty much equally as important, and they all boosted each other.
Compare that to Messi's WC, where he was once again, the most important player for Argentina in every match he played. Messi boosted the entire Argentina team and had key goal contributions in, once again, pretty much every match he played.
If you take a closer look at it, you would realize how these two cases are just impossible to be compared to each other despite what it would initially seem.

for me it could go either way, haaland or messi. Haaland had the perfect season for man city and messi won the world cup, the only thing I can say about Haaland is that he ghosted in the biggest games of the season (which is understandable since his team isn't such a bad team that they have to rely on him, I mean we're talking about man city😂). I can think of a couple of knocks to messi though. He's not in Europe anymore, he did have a decent amount of goals contributions but it was mostly in Ligue 1 which is undoubtedly the worst of the top 5 leagues, and lastly his only argument is his world cup campaign but it was magical.

Further, it is a lot easier to score for top teams specially when that team buys out the entire league like in Germany, i would even say less in France because PSG are morons that buy mostly international stars, while throwing away their top youngsters, though they have been doing same stuff that Bayern did with Monaco.

@@maxwellmaragia2272Well, let's be fair.. De Paul first commits a foul worthy of a yellow, then shoots the ball at the bench after whistle is blown. By comparison Van Persie got red carded for shooting the ball after not hearing the whistle during a CL final. There was some favourable refereeing for Argentina.

I get the impression that a lot of people fail to see that trebles are won less frequently than world cups 😅 As far as I'm aware, City became the second team in Premier League history to win the treble last season. Man United were the first team who won it, and they did so during the 90s.

Man city having the best players and most squad depth on top level. Worth more than the 2 German triples for sure. But behind the 2 Barca triples. @@DillaryHuff

I've realized the last couple of years that many (mostly young people aka Gen Z'ers) have the opinion that the player with the most goals per season deserves the Ballon D'or.
Thats not what the Ballon D'or is. That's the golden boot, kiddos.
Ballon D'or is rewarded to the most IMPACTFUL player of the year.
Tho, I too believe Haaland deserves it this year.
Sidenote: Cannavaro was an absolute beast in 2006 and carried Italy to WC-win and Sneijder got robbed in 2010.

Messis 2019 might be his most deserved outside of 2012. This notion that often comes up of “x deserved the bdr over messi/Ronaldo” just comes from people who see a player have a particularly outstanding season and think that immediately means they win the bdr regardless of anyone else’s performance/people wanting to show their superior knowledge by saying something that goes against the obvious choice/people being bored of messi and Ronaldo winning

I would challenge WC years though.. i did study on WC years and found two third of times it went to the player who had great year that year (nog necessarily win it). This is right for Cruyff in 1974 as well as Modric in 2018. The story and impact was delightful. Let’s not forget Paolo Rossi in 1982 who starred in only three games scoring six goals for Italy that defined the modern history of Italian football

Thats actually an amazing point. Atletico had a stinker first half of the season but after the WC, when it was actually 2023, he was incredible and helped Atletico have an insane second half of the season, even catching up to Real Madrid in points, he was the star man. And since the few weeks of the WC seem to count so much to people (saying Messi should win), he was arguably the best player of France, present in all phases of play, and maybe even best player of the tournament.
The fact that it didn't cross my mind until I saw your comment makes me think that the journalists might not even think of him since, even in the WC, Mbappe was mentioned more than him cause of the goals. He deserves it more than Messi.
I hope Rodri gets the recognition while being a CDM. Maybe that goal in the final might help the goldfish-brained journalists remember that he was the most important player in the Treble win and even won the Nations League with Spain as a bonus.

As a CR7 fan, Messi deserves it. When a European wins the World Cup, its due too legendary performances but when a South-American wins it, its just a 4 week tournament. Messi had 7 goals and 4 assists at the WC. He scored a brace in the final whilst winning Player of the Tournament award (first to do that since Romario in 1994). He made Gvardiol, Aké and van Dijk look like children. He showed up in every match and was involved in nearly every goal. . I'm a Dutchie and Madridista. My hate for Messi at times was at its maximum but even I know Messi deserves it. His own countrymen criticized him. Saying that you can't be the goat without a WC and that he'll never lace the shoes of Maradona. He proved everyone wrong. When he was given the ball he improvised. He did not solely rely on his teammates to give him the best ball in the box. Matthäus won it in 1990 for WC. Stoichkov won it in 1994 for WC performance. Zidane won it in 1998 for WC. R9 won it in 2002 for WC. Cannavaro won it in 2006 for WC. Modric won it in 2018 for WC performance but watch them rob Messi. Haaland is phenomenal but he's not a big game player. What seperates GOATS from Legends is their ability to show up in big games. In semi-finals and finals whether if that's the local league cup, the World Cup or the UCL. I rate Mbappe higher than Haaland, purely for the fact that these 3 can score free kicks and can make ridiculous solo runs to turn around matches. Man City is the embodiment of modern day football. Its a system which aims to provide Haaland. There is no room for fantasy dribblers like Neymar. Its modern day football and it sometimes feels like dead football even though its simply a pure masterclass from Guardiola in the tactician department. Messi, Ronaldo and Mbappe on the other hand, score goals from far away, make insane runs by themselves to complete the most insane comebacks. You can even debate that KDB was more important than Haaland. Argentina won but not because of the team alone. They won because it was one man that uplifted the spirit of an entire nation, one man that was so respected that other players waited till he walked out of the tunnel and unto the field, one man that was so important that his teammates turned into prime Pepe when he was touched by opponents. Argentina would not have won all these cups without Messi. City won 5 out of the last 6 PL titles. Messi gave Argentina something, only Maradona could give them.

I don't think numbering these things would help though. There were too many variables that could be in play. Rather than putting them separately, i think it should be considered in one unified whole consisting of individual performances, clutch/brilliant moments, and awards/accolades the player had.
Haaland vs. Messi probably would end up like Modric in 17/18. Despite him being the best forward in the sport right now, Haaland wasn't crucial in Man City's treble win. In fact, people could argue that in early 2022/23, Haaland's lack of versatility weaken City significantly. He didn't consistently score in big games, nor he was clutch (if anything, that was Gundogan and Rodri). Messi, on the other hand had worse domestic record, but his individual moments were absolutely ridiculous in World Cup. He basially decked all the teams in the knockouts almost single-handedly; that goal vs. Australia, that impossible assist vs. Netherlands, his pass winning a penalty and treating Gvardiol like an amateur vs Croatia, and that movement of his and Lautaro vs. France.
I think Haaland probably should win it, but the distance between those two isn't as far as people think. Messi will end up winning it though.

Messi & Ronaldo win a lot of Ballon dors => Real, Barca, La liga, Arg, and Por obviously get boosted statwise. They didnt win because they played for those Teams. Imo Country, League and Team should have been left out completly. You should have instead added amount of Hatricks, amount of playtime, Winning Goals for different Leagues. I think for 2023 it's a perfect split down the middle for either Haaland or Messi. I love them both so I won't be whining either way. It really is just down to preference. Messi was in a less competitive league and is no longer in Europe but had a ridiculous WC performance that was nothing short of historic and it's not really fair to hold it over his head for over a decade and say that not winning the WC is the reason he wasn't the best but then when he goes and wins it say that it's 'just the world cup'... Then there's Haaland who had an absolutely ridiculous season and won the treble but was a striker in by far the best team in Europe (not much competition for the PL title when 4/6 of the big teams are in the mud) and tbh he kinda ghosted in against Madrid and in both finals... so yeah. Could go either way and I'd be happy with either winner. As for the ballon d'or as a whole, I think the voting should be more rigorous but overall I've been pretty satisfied with the results. I don't think you can argue that Benzema, Modric or Messi (to name a few recent winners) were not deserving winners in their own right. There's unfortunately always going to be someone who gets the short end of the stick, that's how it's gonna be when you try and whittle down every player in the biggest team sport down to one. It's a necessary concept but an inherently messy one. I think this video overlooked a couple of things but overall it's a good idea to demand more accountability from big organisations.

Many people seem confused between Ballon d'or (best player) and Golden boot (Top scorer)
All it takes to win golden boot is scoring the most from anyone else. Even if it's a penalty or tap ins. It counts.
While to win ballon d'or, it's a little bit tricky, because it's from your average performance rating over the year and not just from the goal. The key is being consistently the best in every match = most man of the match in a year.
Of course, the ballon d'or is only relevant when their team actually won something in the first place because of that player influence. Not just sitting on the bench, while golden boot can stiil be won if a player manages to score 100 goals in a match and then sits on the bench a whole season

Messi win vs Van Dijk was extremely and totally deserved. Only some brainless CR7 fans can claim that he didn't deserve that one after having the biggest carry job ever from a footballer. Lewa was robbed the 2020 award by fifa and also its arguable he deserved the 2021 one that Messi won. Ronaldo deserved the 2018 one too. This year Messi absolutely deserves it after the greatest performance in the greatest competition in all of sports plus second best club numbers albeit in easier leagues. Halaand winning it would be absolutely deserved too

R9 won a ballon d'or despite being injured all season.
Paolo rossi won a ballon d'or despite playing 3 games all season.
You can say haaland deserves the ballon d'or but dismissing messi from the conversation is idiotic.

He played well at world cup but that is not enough cause rest of his season was bad. Haaland and de bruyne bith won treble and should win ballon d or as well
