    Great review and summary, Pete. Your absolutely right about the price, but after buying higher end knives all over the place for the last 2-3 years, there is just something the small Sebenza has, that all others are lacking. What I've also realized lately, is that with many of my purchases I was unconsciously trying to find Sebenza-ish qualities in knives at a lower price point, so I would worry less about using them. What I've achieved by this, is ending up with a bunch of semi-expensive knives that together out-price a Sebenza many times, but still fails to outperform it on attributes that are important to me. I might just find it just as sensible to sell off most of them, and rather get my small Sebenza a big brother. Decadent or not, I also like the fact that there is some history attached to a knife, not at the cost of practicality, but if I can have it both ways - yeah.

    • @ogenmatic
      @ogenmatic Před 4 lety +1

      My experience is similar in some ways. What Pete said about giving a Sebenza as a gift makes sense and it being the last/only knife you really need. My difference is that I finally bought myself a Large & Small “gift” & have found that most other knives I have acquired don’t get much carry time.
      One other knife I’ve grown to love that I ‘gifted’ to myself is the Reate made, Liong Mah designed ‘Lanny Flipper’. It satisfies my fidgeting & flicking needs that the Sebenzas don’t.

    • @ogenmatic
      @ogenmatic Před 4 lety

      Knife Noob
      M390 is German made I believe but is nearly chemically equivalent to the US made 20CV
      It does not sharpen easier than S35VN in my experience but is quite manageable. The CRK knives purposely don’t harden their S35VN as much as some other makers.

      I have met a dozen guys who buy $1k+ knives regularly and say exactly the same thing you do.
      While $400 range is my current limit and I'm not baller, I feel the exact same way as well.
      I own a 25, had a CF 21, and just picked up a full Ti 21 for all the reasons you said.
      Just a phenomenal knife.

    • @haakonr1
      @haakonr1 Před 2 lety

      @User 2389 what’s your point? As it happens I didn’t sell off all of my other knives after all. Preferences and needs evolve, but that didn’t happen at the expense of the Sebenza. I like it just as much. I like S35VN too. Not the hottest steel out there, but pretty well balanced for the applications I like to use my small 21 for.

    This is the most balanced and practical review of the Chris Reeve Large Sebenza 21 knife on CZcams! Nice job! Seriously, thanks for putting such thought into it! I don’t own this knife (yet?), and your review clarified a lot of my own uncertainties / feelings about the knife, which is what you hope a review will do when you hit ‘play’.

  • @thesho0ter1911
    @thesho0ter1911 Před 4 lety +3

    The secret to buying midtechs is to buy them on the secondary market. I’ve bought many CRKs for extreme discounts if you’re patient. I see Large 21’s selling for $300 or so in lightly used condition. For example, I got a 3.5” XM-18 for $230 last week. Nearly 50% off and it’s like new. The traditional big 3 “Hinderer, Strider, CRK” are still my favorite knives despite owning and using all the newer stuff on the market. :)
    At the end of the day, the Lg 21 will always be the best EDC cutting tool on the market in my view. Value doesn’t mean end price. The customer service/warranty, spa services, resale value, are all factors to consider here. For example, if that SpydieChef develops lock rock a few years from now, what is spyderco going to do for you? Nothing.

      After cleaning all the inner bits, going on about smoothness and fine machining, it would sick to get some rope pieces stuck in the action, then ground into pieces while flicking it. And now you have to take the whole fuckin thing apart to clean it again.
      See, cleaning your work surface is a practical matter. Aussies are supposed to be practical, yeah (or "oi")?

    my comment was to long and hard to type, so in short I'm glad to see you posting and agreed the Sebenze is a great knife with great history while at the same time is a large amount for such a tool. I understand anyone who loves or doesn't understand why one needs such an expensive cutting tool. Theres so many sides into being a knife lover, or collector, or In my old case I was just addicted to buying every knife made to see what was the best TO ME. In the end I took a brake and sold most only keeping about 10 of them, sadly I sold many that were very amazing but I just found to expensive to comfortably use and abuse. Good luck to all on there folding knife journey for those into Sebenzas I also recommend Les Georges VECP it like a sebenza on steroids but even smoother and IMO way more comfortable, and for those not wanting to spend that much try a Kizer T1. I can say I sold most of my high end blades but kept two kizer T1 and have never like a knife more for cutting and there fun as hell to open and having owned three can take a serious beating. The End.

Honestly can’t believe I’ve gotten to this point, a bit of a ridiculous feeling buying a knife this much, but tired of “Instagram” knives that are all form and no function, here today, gone tomorrow with no long term support from the manufacturers.

    Almost 11 minutes in before you used the word "tolerance." I was starting to think this wasn't a real sabenza review.

    • @ogenmatic
      @ogenmatic Před 4 lety +6

      I cringe when I hear most reviewers use the specific term “excellent tolerances”. My career was in metal cutting manufacturing and on mechanical drawings & designs a ‘tolerance’ is merely an allowable amount of deviation from a specified dimension to stay within spec. So while there’s the ability of a designed item to have “tight tolerances” you really cannot have “excellent tolerances”.
      You can, however, have excellent designs, excellent specs, or excellent quality control. Semantics but when I hear the term excellent tolerances it gets under my skin & so many reviewers (not Pete!) use it.
      Great comment btw. Cracked me up!

    I have a Millennium Large Sebenza and have enjoyed the ownership and using it for all those years. No reason it won't do a heap of years more.
    (The Large is the better knife over the small if you were to only have one Sebenza.)
    Great review, just about sums it up.
    I have work tools, knives, watches, all sorts that get a battering. And I have some prestige items/tool just because they are so nice to own and use. The Sebenzas, because of their price, do fit the latter, even though very able.
    Very capable and understated are why I love mine. A Classic for good reason. There maybe a better knife out there but it won't be a Sebenza. The Omega Watch of folding knives.

      It was my experience that simply handling them was far different than finally owning them. When my friend loaned me both a large & small for a couple of months my thinking was, “Yes. Exceptionally nice but that price!”
      Once I finally bought one it was almost like a prideful thing where I just kept growing my appreciation for it simply because it was mine. Hard to explain but it’s kinda like driving a car that most people can’t afford and feeling cool driving down the road. Not the same thing as when you get to drive a friend’s cool car or rent one. That feeling is fleeting whereas actually owning it lasts & lasts.

      @JustPorcupines Před 4 lety

      We like "new" things. Folding knives used to be the last knives you'd see in full flat grinds. When ffg caught on, people left hollow grinds behind, because it's what our forefathers used, which obviously means it's obsolete, right? Trends are cyclical though, so hollow grinds will make a return(it's already starting). Similarly, straight razors and safety razors have made a return, despite our access to razors with 15 blades, 3 lotion strips, battery powered trimmer, and the pre-programmed robotic voice that tells you how manly you are.
      Buy what you like and ignore the trends. Remember, the mullet was once cool... people make bad choices...

    I think you're wrong about your cardboard statement at 10:00. The force in between the box and the blade is friction, and the amount of area touching does not affect the amount of friction it has. The only thing that causes friction is the force of the box squeezing the knife, and the coefficient of friction between the two materials. Maybe the hollow grind does slice through better, but it has nothing to do with the amount of material touching the knife.

I hate thumb studs and much prefer flippers. However, you can "train" a Recon I (maybe some other knives, too) to flip open with a hard wrist flick. Leave it partially open for three days and blast it with WD-40. Oh yes: my Recon I is partially serrated so I can easily cut small branches, vines, big boxes. • @RileySantiago

      Once the pivot is tightened, there is essentially no gap for dirt to get in. That is one of the main benefits of washers as opposed to bearings.

    I can definitely understand the issue with the price. I’ve been able to justify the price because the sebenza has taken the place of many other knives for me. It is very capable and versatile while being very reliable and durable. Where many of my other knives such as microtechs, benchmades etc have developed blade play, lock rock and things of that nature my 6 year old sebenza hasn’t had a single problem.

    Why on earth use Torx drivers on Allen screws? All that engineering goes into a Sebenza, and then that :-(. They even supply the correct wrench as a courtesy. Your centering was off because you installed the washers differently from the way they wore in. In other words, you flipped at least one of them.

  • @antimatter4733
    @antimatter4733 Před 4 lety +1

    I appreciate the review but I still don't see why its so expensive. Does it being thinner behind the edge and having a slightly smoother action make a 200 dollar knife worth 450 dollars as opposed to getting something with much better materials that actually stands out

      Got a 2015 large sebenza 21 with unique graphics and tiger's eye inlay from a youtuber for $400 in mint condition. And just like Pete, I really didn't get it until I took it apart and put it back together. Made me buy a stock umnumzaan and then a large inkosi, tanto blade with natural micarta inlays.
      The inkosi is the most ergonomic for me. But the bushing pivot on the sebenza makes it the overall winner. Love them all though and will never part with them.
