It’s time for a hot hatch vs performance SUV drag race!
Now you might be looking at this line-up and thinking it’s a pointless race. However, once we delve a bit deeper at the specs, you’ll see this race might be a bit closer than you thought!
Starting off with the Golf R, it’s powered by a 2-litre 4 cylinder turbocharged petrol engine that can deliver 320hp & 420Nm of torque. It’s relatively light, too, weighing in at 1,550kg.
Then we have the Audi, which has double the number of cylinders under the bonnet, where it houses a 4-litre twin-turbo V8 that puts down 507hp and 770Nm of torque. It’s also oh-so-much heavier than the Golf, tipping the scales at 2,250kg!
So sure, the Audi has way more power, but it’s also 700kg heavier! And more importantly, while the Golf will set you back £40,000, it’s only half the price of the Audi! So is it worth paying so much more for that extra power? There’s only one way to find out… LET’S RACE!

Small suggestion: Film the brake test with a drone, it makes it clearer to see which car wins
I believe they are filming on or near an active airfield, so that would mean they'd need permission from the CAA (FAA) every single time they do a brake test. They've probably thought about it, but probably concluded with it being way too impractical.
I think it would be just better to measure breake times with the timing gear, for individual cars
I think it's better to place a camera 10m before the brake line to see the brake lights and we can decide who early braked
I don't really think that this particular break test is relevant. Mat himself said that this is just for fun, sort of.
Why not take photo from NASA satellite even better....

Holy shit that 2nd launch of the SQ7 looked like it was gonna pop a wheelie.

Suggestion - when you are revving up your car, you always show your speedo cluster. It would be really good idea to show also the opponents cluster, not just the exhaust.

I Love these videos. The cars are completely different clases price wise and the market theyre meant for is completely different. But thats what makes this so cool, there are like no other channels that would ever think of comparing these cars.

This is the content I like. I was recently shocked when a new MG Electric SUV was neck and neck with my Mk7 Fiesta ST. Love mis-match drag races where cars are similar

Except 2 mistakes, one (4:04) on the second drag race where Golf was in front and the exterior filming showed in reverse, and another one (9:34) on the second break test where Golf was behind and, again, it showed in reverse.

Ur not trippin, it just wasnt the exact same clip. Thats why'd i rather see a drone follow the race or a go pros attached so we can view the whple race without the multiple angle jumping. But it looks cool and cinematic and makes the video easier to watch so doubt they ever would do that.
The ZF gearbox on SQ7 is tuned quite laidback in D. Shifting in S it becomes so vibrant as if it were another much lighter car.

@@sbjwjwkdjdkej3170 my first new car was a 1989 GTI 16v. The 0-60 mph was 8.5 seconds and at that time was considers fairly quick for the segment. A 12 second 1/4 mile street car, if you had a car that could do that it was the baddest car in the area.
Cars have come a very long way since 1989. That makes me smile.

Wow, I'm impressed with the Golf R! Being able to beat one of those big V8 SUV's in a straight line is no easy feat these days.
It mostly shows that this car is a pretty heavy dude with 500hp
@@Nordlicht05 Still, all that weight helps them put their power down, and with traction control, an auto gearbox, and AWD, they put almost ALL their power down, save for parasitic loss. Fast SUV's are a force to be reckoned with for straightline stuff on the street. I regularly get into arguments with SUV fanbois about their ability to corner however, a favorite pastime of mine :P lightness and size will always be the most important thing to me
@@ethanheitz4489 thanks to the eu castration of weight-related co2, these shitty suv have the better engine. i will never buy a cheap 4-cylinder, but also not a suv with a high risk of rolling over with bad cornering....climate change is a lie, otherwise the suv as the most inefficient vehicle body would not be seen as a status symbol....For me, a sports car means superior driving performance with the same hp, and that's where SUVs lose, and they also consume more. So why eco, vegan, muesli, cycling and such nonsense.I don't want eco and sustainability, you want it, you don't want nuclear power, you don't want illegal races in cities,...

Hey Matt, quick pilot tip. Most runways have black, box-like, “signs” on both sides of the runway with bold white numbers … These denote the length of runway left. For example, “6” would mean 6,000ft left, “2” would mean 2,000ft left, etc. Hope this will help you judge your runway remaining distances in the future for safer racing.

I actually miss the off-road car tests. You used to do a pull competition between two all wheel drives. You could do that again, or test light-off-roaders in slippery conditions.

Just gonna say that I am intimately familiar with the 2020 SQ7, with ours currently at 15,xxx miles. Getting ready for another 1500 mile road trip this weekend for my father's birthday! The look on the Coyote 5.0 Mustang owners faced as he got taken to Gapplebees by a 5500lb+ SUV pulling a motorcycle trailer with my KTM on it... XD
SQ7 (7 seater) 0 60 mph in 3.5 secs (motortrend, car and driver)
Golf R 0 60 mph 4.2 (at the best)
In real world (all with launch control of course) the little golf has no chance.
I ve even read that people with stock SQ7 removed third row, and with ceramic brakes and minimum fluids and gas got ad low as a 3.3 seconds on the 0-60 mph. Bonkers
Yeah, 13.1 in the 1/4 makes no sense either. The SQ7 runs 12 seconds dead.

That R has at least 360 bhp, and the 12.3 car was tuned to nearly 400.

I think that video says it's stock version
wrong. all stock. bad times today as weather was bad. SQ7 did a 12.5 before on this channel and golfs done a 12.3. The Stock Mk8 r's have been dyno'd around 340-350hp and all do around a 12.3 in ideal situations. My Mk 8 does consistent 12.3-5s on real roads and i havent modded it. Trading in for new rs3 tho :)
