Why Do We Need a Pope? - Apologetics Series - Episode 16

  • On today’s episode of the SSPX Podcast, we’ll continue our Apologetics Series with two episodes on the papacy. In this episode, Fr. MacGillivray will look at the concept of the papacy itself. We’ve already seen that Jesus set up the Catholic Church, but he left us with 12 Apostles, who would be the first bishops. Did he actually set up St. Peter as the most important of the Apostles? And what was the reason for putting one fallible, hot-headed, uneducated man at the head of His Divine Church?
You can find notes to all these episodes at sspxpodcast.com/apologetics, as well as all our previous episodes. There as well, you can find a link to help support this project. This is free to listen to, as well as all the resources we’re posting, but if you can help with a one time or a small monthly recurring donation, you’ll be making sure that we can continue this work of producing good Catholic content on a regular basis.

Absolutely fabulous episode. Thank you Father and Andrew. God bless you both.
It would have been wonderful to have the teachings being conveyed in this series at school! So many Catholics wouldn't have fallen away I think. In any case, it's my belief Christ is doing a great work through the SSPX. How magnificent is Christ!

According to the 'Reception of Converts' ceremonial "verbiage" -- the convert recites in part -- (in order to be saved); 'There is no salvation without submission to the Pope' (No Pope [lineage to Christ] No Salvation). This would likely not apply to a Pope who 1) has no lineage to Christ -- or 2) acts as though he doesn't. ...plus, since there are two Catholic Churches (each with their own Pope) I suppose one would have to choose -- (or join the third catholic church that recognizes no Pope as an authority figure). Since modern day conversions are no longer utilizing the 'reception of converts ceremony' -- it must no longer be importanter to choose one church over the other. 🙂

Is it true that the curtains that led into the Holy of Holies were called the way, the truth, and the life?

No ---- i think this is very unlikely BUT they hid the fact that the one time in the year that the high priests spoke the name of almighty God was in an empty space ----- come to think of this ---- perhaps our Lord quoted this when He said that He was the the way. the truth and the life.
The high priests alone knew it was empty in Herod's temple ---- because they couldn't find the Ark of the Covenant ----- which is probably in Ethiopia,

Can you please deal with the notion of "infallible safety" as present in the authentic magisterium? It's seems that the Church has affirmed time and time again that such teachings of the Pope or the church, even when not definitive dogmatic or infallible are nevertheless at least subjectively safe to adhere to. How does this square with the sspx's positions. This topic seems to have been not yet dealt with in any real detail and it seems to be a mantra repeated over and over by those who do not share the sspx's views.

I'm going to really simplify the idea put forward by Fr Alvaro Calderon, of the SSPX in his book "La lampara bajo el celemin" (I don't believe the book has an english translation). During VII and afterwards, the Church hierarchy, infected by modernism, has put aside its authority, and does not teach with authority. So VII and all post-VII "magisterium" isn't magisterium at all, therefore can be safely ignored as it is not safe to adhere to.
Examples of this kind of attitude include: Francis rejecting the title of Vicar of Christ, repeated assertions during and after VII by Paul VI that the Council was supposed to be "pastoral" and not define any new dogmas (why even have it then?), Paul VI's refusal to discipline in any way Bishops and "Catholic" "intellectuals" who rejected Humanae Vitae because it contained timeless Church teaching on contraception that they wanted to get rid off. JPII's lack of formal excomunication of Archbishop Lefebvre and the consecrated bishops in 88, being content with simply affirming the Archbishop had excommunicated himself ipso facto.

@@RobRod305 Nope, not even sedeprivationist. Bishops are still Bishops, Pope is Pope, they just don't use their God given authority to teach, so their teachings when against tradition can be safely ignored. Usually the authority of the Magisterium is such that I don't even have the right to question it.

We see the Holy Spirit and Jesus, and the Eternal Father at Jesus' baptism, and in Saint Matthew 16:18, we see The Trinity together again. Blessed are you, Simon- Bar Jona: because flesh and blood hath not revealed this to thee, but My Father Who is in Heaven. No doubt through the Holy Spirit.

St. Peter is the rock on which the foundation of the church was built.. our first Pope from whom all sucessive Pope leaders came there after. It is true that Jesus arranged it to be so. All Christains therefore should abide by Christs desire and obey the churches by hierarchy and respect the Pope.
