The Pope: First Among Equals, or Monarch of the Church? - Apologetics Series - Episode 17

  • On today’s episode of the SSPX Podcast, we’ll continue our Apologetics Series by looking a little deeper at the papacy with Fr. MacGillivray. Last time, we saw that Jesus set up Peter as His Vicar on earth. But what about after St. Peter? There are tons of theories about who holds authority within the Catholic Church. Is the pope one of multiple patriarchs, who need to share power? Or is he the supreme, absolute monarch of the entire Catholic Church? How can we use Scripture and Tradition to answer this?
You can find notes to all these episodes at sspxpodcast.com/apologetics, as well as all our previous episodes. There as well, you can find a link to help support this project. This is free to listen to, as well as all the resources we’re posting, but if you can help with a one time or a small monthly recurring donation, you’ll be making sure that we can continue this work of producing good Catholic content on a regular basis.

This is amazing! Thank you for doing this! The flock needs this kind of education. Our shepherds have abandoned us and left us for the wolves to devour. If I had an sspx chapel near me, I would attend.

Thank you Fr. MacGillivray and Andrew. The volume of scriptures is so important as it brings us back to understanding our Faith more fully and simply.
After reading about the upcoming Synod on Synodality and what that means to us and the further destruction of what remains of the visible Church in Rome, and when I hear you, Father, reference St. Peter in 1Peter 5 speaking of Rome being Babylon, lightbulbs start to turn on.
The scriptures seem clearer now when we consider the German Synod and the Vatican II spirit that is permeating Rome (Babylon) that the Book of Apocalypse has several references to our times. In chapter 16 verses 13 and following, it's not difficult to watch it unfold:
    (13) "And I saw from the mouth of the dragon, and from the mouth of the beast, and from the mouth of the false prophet, three unclean spirits like frogs.
    (14) "For they are the spirits of devils working signs, and they go forth unto kings of the whole earth, to gather them to battle against the great day of the Almighty God."
Isn't this the battle spoken of by St. Ignatius between the forces of evil against God and the Angels who are seeking our salvation? Isn't this what we are seeing world wide with mankind turning from God and putting itself on the thrones of their own hearts? As the church goes..... So goes the world.
It's interesting when we read in Genesis 11 of the people of the earth building a city and tower to reach Heaven knowing their endeavors and motives were against God. He scattered them and confused their languages and the land there was called Babel (that is, confusion).
Isn't that what is coming out of Babylon, Rome, today, confusion?
(16:16) "And he shall gather them together into a place, which in Hebrew is called Armagedon", (That is, hill of robbers).
Has that not happened in Babylon Rome today as the Synod assembles to come against God, the Church of Man against the Church of God?
It's a very apt picture of squatters trespassing and taking up residence. There is no appreciation for the work and diligence in keeping the residence maintained through years of tradition. Only, to take what someone else has worked hard at... God, Himself, and destroying it. Pagan Rome is rising from the ashes after 20 centuries of Christ's Church reigning.
How fortuitous, Father, that the new Immaculata in Saint Marys, Kansas features The Woman clothed with the sun and crowned with twelve stars from Apocalypse 12. We also read in verse 14 of chapter 12:
"And there was given to the woman two wings of a great eagle," (Archbishop Lefebvre and Bishop de Castro Mayer) "that She might fly into the desert unto Her place, where She is nourished for a time and times, and half a time from the face of the serpent."
Our Mother, the Queen of Heaven, the Mother of God and Holy Mother Church was kicked out by those squatters along with all the stuffy old air of tradition; but was scooped up and protected from further violation by the "two wings of a great eagle".
Thank you, Archbishop Lefebvre and Bishop de Castro Mayer! Thank you SSPX and all those adjuncts, the "rest of Her seed", who are guarding the precious Gifts of our Faith for how ever long it takes before all is fulfilled and we hear those awesome and powerful words against "Babylon" in Apocalypse 18:2~5. We must, like Habakkuk 2:1, be vigilant because that time will come like a thief in the night!

Scriptures are the "inerrant Word of God", and put the stamp of Divine authenticity on work such as this apologetic work. Popes, Fathers of the Church, and Doctors of the Church made them the mainstay of their teachings. The Scriptures put the mark of God, and therefore the final word on their works. It is so refreshing that you two have followed their Tradition, and put their "mark" of authenticity on your work. This is the seamless garment that we can use to clothe our hearts and souls and minds... without fear. Thank you both for listening toThe Holy Spirit and following the Sacred Tradition of our Fathers in the Faith.

Bet you Lofton is going to do a podcast about how it is "hypocritical" for the SSPX to do a podcast on the Papacy and it's authority. The difference between is that traditionalists think you follow the pope and his teachings provided they aren't opposed to other preceding precepts of the faith and he thinks the Pope says jump you say how high...
