revving up a 2-stroke like you are doing when it is cold is a brain dead thing to do... very easy for a ring to break since it has not heated up and expanded properly, meaning it is brittle and moving in and out of the exhaust port is looking for trouble.....

Anything oily or slippery will help keep the muck from stickin'
I used to fill my air filter walls with Vasoline or grease ...just coat it so the dirt will stick and your filter gets less dirty..especially in sand tracks ..i put some between filter and carb on the boot - inside in case anything got past too ..more for seeing if my filter leaked than anything....easier to tell if stuff was getting sucked in...
Cleaning the filter box was easy..
Just wipe it enough to get the dirt/sand out and recoat it....doesn't take long... I could run one filter on our beach sand track when everyone was changing or cleaning their's ( i had spares ready too - cleaned and oiled in plastic zip lock bags if needed of course ) .

That looks like a Boyesen RAD valve. Nice upgrade over stock. 1989 last year of the single radiator. Always loved the look of those bikes. The air leak is more than likely your top end issue; it's causing the bike to run to lean(will also cause a high idle, I think that's why the idle dropped when you sprayed it, it stopped the air leak until it was all sucked through the crack). Don't forget to put on the two vent hoses on the top side of the carb.

Cheap turns out to be expensive. Hope you have better luck than I have. I picked up a '96kx125 last month and finding parts is hard and expensive. I have way more money in mine that I will ever get for it when I sell it.

Great trick to check a piston if your not taking it apart is by sticking your phone in there and take a flash on video while you push it over by hand 👍🏼

I replaced my carburetor coupler with a piece of automotive radiator hose, it's reinforced and holds up better than the stock coupler, done this several times
