The exquisite Rosslyn Chapel is a masterpiece in stone. It used to be one of Scotland's best kept secrets, but it became world-famous when it was featured in Dan Brown's the Da Vinci Code.
Art historian Helen Rosslyn, whose husband's ancestor built the chapel over 500 years ago, is the guide on a journey of discovery around this perfect gem of a building. Extraordinary carvings of green men, inverted angels and mysterious masonic marks beg the questions of where these images come from and who were the stonemasons that created them? Helen's search leads her across Scotland and to Normandy in search of the creators of this medieval masterpiece.
Such a magical place, we were so very lucky to have been married here fifteen years ago. Of course, it still had the roof covering which we dubbed the Space Shuttle Launch Pad which did affect the photographs somewhat but on the other hand we had a much closer access to view the external carvings higher up. Also, it offered a unique vantage point for the photographer to take some amazing group shots.
We will never forget our incredible day there and every time we visit we are left awestruck.
Just a shame there was no mention regarding the Master Mason's Pillar or the Apprentice's Pillar,
@New Jerusalem I'm not sure but I don't think so. It does still operate as a regular church (Scottish Episcopalian) and the Trust looks after the visitors centre but since the popularity of Dan Brown and the movie with Tom Hanks the tourism side really took off, not least that your'e apparently no longer allowed to take photos inside (so you buy the tourists books in the centre, presumably!)
It took a lot of convincing the Reverend at the time we were not 'Grail Hunters' or that we weren't interested in Dan Brown and I found out recently the Reverend quit within a year after our marriage citing the increase in tourism making his daily job ever more harder. It's a shame as although I'm not particularly religious he made me think if there were more like him the world would be a far nicer place.
The place is so worth a visit if your'e ever near Edinburgh which itself is an amazing place, full of history and stunning architecture.

I visited the chapel 10 yrs ago with my wife and daughters. It was covered at that time, but was a beautiful structure , and there was some power u felt inside it as u stood in the centre of the church. It’s said that the brass plate inside the church is the centre of the earth. The holy grail is still a mystery. But I am lucky to have visited it once. Thx to Helen Rossylyn for her marvellous commentry.
I rember as a kid in and out the chapel same as the castle 40 yrs ago was brought up on a farm in the glen this was my playground as a boy . So proud to call it where I was brought up

With reference to your (and my) fascination with the fact that the carvings up in the roof were still very detailed, despite no one being able to see them when they were in place, a nun at my school 50 years ago told us that they had discovered exquisitely detailed work high up in the roof of Westminster Abbey, not seen for hundreds of years. Her theory about this was that, even if people couldn’t see the detail, God could, and that is who the work was really for. In a religious age, five hundred years ago, this could have been the case at Rosslyn too.

The only other place you will find intricate carvings like that is in India on their temples also in Cambodia in ankerwatt but these are thousands of years old not built by man they say ,this chappel has some priceless carvings very worth saving ,a very time consuming effort to build that ,old jimmy Australia x pat from Scotland

Odd. The name of the village is Roslyn - but the name of the family who built (and own) the chapel was (and still is), St Clair.

The shapes in the window at 5:22 reminds me of a fractal (the Mandelbrot Set).
Came across an article about some restoration done at the chapel which was very critical of some restoration on the stone which involved modern polymer chemicals. The writer of the article was very critical of the results. Watching for the areas which raised his concerns. Did find what I was looking for. _----------. Turns out that was the concrete slurry ( an old recipe) that spoiled the stone work; not a modern polymer as the writer of the article supposed.

@4min's&45sec's....This lovely lady say's that one of the stones is the wrong way round.....The man, the architect and the genius who designed, scrutinized every last millimetre of the churches sculpturing, not only had every single piece carved in wood before it was then carved in the stone and thoroughly scrutinized again.....So. You tell me. Was this a mistake?...This is not a mistake. Check him out.

Unfortunately the artificial stone slurry cannot be removed as it mechanically attached. A magnesium cement slurry. A formula used to make those old cement sinks that Mom had next to her washing machine when I was a child in the 50s.

Way up high is a carved ceiling. If it's not a ceiling, then it's in one of the arches. I was surprised to see a carving of the U.S.A. flag !!! (I was there, over 10 yrs ago.) Recently I saw a video (tourist guide) & they couldn't film the inside of the chapel, but they showed the cafe & gift shop. In the gift shop, they showed a display of Celtic crosses, & antique looking Cross necklaces. They also had masonic symbols to add to necklace chains, or charm bracelets.
Holy cow.....and the 8th deadly sin is to let this masterpiece deteriorate....Breath taking....thank you
....and the ninth would be for the actual owner's of the church to use their own funds for the repairs when they could plead poverty and get a lump sum from the national lottery..... they'd use that for a little vacation or two to the Algarve as well.

oddly enough it seems to me that any fluid able to be painted on a surface can be dissolved by a chemical which would eat away at that silly material which was painted on in the 50's but cannot dissolve the stone beneath it ..just a thought
+norm lor One thing that gets me are current conservators who give the impression "people in the past had no idea what they were doing. We are smarter and know better". I'd like to be around about 50 or more years from now to learn what people then would think of what has been going on all over the place in this time period. :)

Considering the simple logic basic concept if life is not free, why the hell would death be any cheaper? When you consider for the last 490 years Give or take we have had the manpower woman influence or vice versa to have created clean high paying jobs from coast-to-coast globally that would improve upon and maintain the quality of our life in such a manner.
That the mass majority of the population from coast-to-coast globally would naturally, gradually, and systematically start becoming stronger, smarter, healthier, happier, better off physically, mentally, and financially possibly spiritually then the previous generation. Now I would like to resurrect the wish and prayer I made prior to my 8th birthday which was to be held spiritually accountable to the statements I proclaim to the way I'm living personally and professionally. I guarantee you never see or hear another body, man or woman in power, persons of legal, religious authority, or leaders ever freely validate the statements they proclaim with that level of certainty one reason they don't have the best interest of the majority of the population's needs at heart a another reason could be they cum from a bloodline of cowards or simply have a lifestyle that suggests, confirms, and validates them as being feebleminded physically inadequate submissive subservient which it doesn't get any worse than that. One is genetically inherited and the other is a simple generic learned behavior. Quite possible to be a combination of these worst-case scenarios combined is one to say the least. Nonetheless either way it is physically, mentally, and spiritually useless to freely live and die in such a low quality manner.
Especially if that ignorant stupidity, weak, lonely desperation stems from being soft, lazy, out of shape, over fed, undernourished, overworked, and underpaid with a dirty low-paying job that comes from outdated power sources, inferior materials, poisonous, toxic substances, pesticides, and chemicals that never change their killing composition. Which means simpletons whether it is a solid, liquid, or burnt off into our airways atmosphere as a vapor it is always going to be poisonous, debilitating, and deadly to the body at the same time polluting, corrupting, and devastating to mother Earth and all the various different forms of life that live within this world. There is no cash profit to be made in the demise of the planet. Thanks to those dirty low-paying jobs we are in the mist of environmental financial global collapse. The good news souls and spirits have paid out are picking up the tab on the end results of those dirty low-paying jobs. The even better news that the common, basic, average, normal man woman may be able to comprehend his souls and spirits have been are being managed, directed, maintained, and implemented with all the disease, sickness, illness, pain, suffering, injury, abuse, neglect, hunger, addiction, sadness, anger, and hyper- aggressive violent criminal conduct. That has been allowed to occur manifesting throughout the history of mankind into what it is today thanks to people like Donald Trump who have the false belief if the mass majority of the population is at their worst they will feel less afraid scared inferior to the true potentials of love, honor, and the creation of life. Here's the deal you're either part of the world solutions or exacerbating the planets problems there is no safe in between.
