Geoguessr: Interesting Photospheres in Obscure Countries #4 [PLAY ALONG]

- It's been 2 weeks, so here's a biggy for the geoguessr heads.
It's the map that never fails to perplex and intrigue. My best score of 19,785 is there to beat, but will it be one curveball two many this week? If you haven't played along yet, it is time.
PLAY ALONG: Play your round, put your marker down, then switch tabs back to CZcams to watch my attempt and the result. This way you don't ruin the game or the video!

The fact that Tom still wants to trust the compass on photospheres cracks me up
Ikr
Thought of this too
It's both hilarious and infuriating. For how good Tom is at this game, he sometimes is surprisingly clueless.
@@paavomultala6062 Because any random people can upload photosphere, so in some (many) occasions, the compass is totally wrong, if it's not even the photosphere location on the map
yeah hes kinda nigga
Kwibuka means 'to remember' and describes the annual commemoration of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda.
So not a 'really fancy hotel' as Tom speculates in the video...
I had no idea -- thank you!
What's the 25 about?
@@igorf7004 1994 + 25 = 2019
yeahh I clicked because 'kwibuka 25' was in the thumbnail 😭
as a diaspora rwandese, I remember going to events to commemorate it
Another classic intro. For years I've been wondering what size plectrum you prefer. Thank you GeoWizard.

@Don't Read My Profile Photo Alright I won't
Great now I’ve read it three times
0.88? That's a thicc boy.
@@wloffblizz I wouldn't say it's a thicc one. Maybe for acoustic guitar, but for electric 1mm isn't uncommon at all. I like to use carbon fiber reinforced 1mm picks, they're not too thicc but a lot more stiff than regular plastic.

Tom "Howdy!!"
Also Tom: "Fuck you"
LMFAO I absolutely died laughing at that part
If only he'd added "wanker" it would be the most British thing I've ever heard.
i was rofl for real haha
the war between past tom and current tom continues lol
why do I feel bad for past tom
"Tom?"
"Yeah?"
"Shut the f*ck up"
Cracked me up so hard
That whole bit had me on the floor!
Those vehicles are likely for the fire brigade demonstrations as they're on their property xD One car has been opened by the jaws of life, the other burned.
Yeah I was thinking that, those broken down cars are training objects for the firemen.
Next to a power pole? Probably moved there after they burned
@@Icanbacktrailers why not next to a power pole? That's a likely spot to find a wrecked car.
@@Icanbacktrailers Looks like the grass underneath was burned though, was thinking is strange to be so close to power pole too

And this hahaha 7:04
That's one of numerous reasons as to why we all keep coming back
howdy
@@vsfships1102 it's a bot. Just report and don't draw attention to them tbh
Curacao has street view footage and, to remind, this map doesn't have countries with official Google footage. Similar thing applies to Hong Kong
“Kwibuka” means “to remember”, and 25 is for the years since. Cheers.
I wonder if they have a giant set of numbers that they use to update the sign every year...

Thanks for playing my map again, Tom! You got some good rounds - I know you can get a perfect score on this map eventually!
He really dropped the ball with Rwanda.
@@stephano6793 Yeah we watched the video too.
@@P1nkR he was not affirming, he was lamenting.
Your map is my favourite to play! Also, I hope Tom will one day remember that this map does not include countries with official street coverage. He keeps considering countries like Tunisia, Turkey, Taiwan, etc when they're supposed to be obscure countries. Either way, it's part of his charm.
Unfortunately 10 months after the video was posted the first image/location of the challenge can't be loaded (0 Points) and the third one is a completely different picture than the one Tom got.
My best round was the Rwanda one, only because I have stood in that exact spot on two separate occasions. Great video Tom.
I knew I remembered it from somewhere!
dude the flags of gabon and rwanda are really similar
Kigali really threw off Tom and I was rooting hard for him to get it right & almost screaming my screen. Anyway, the street maps on Geoguessr for Africa are mostly outdated by about 15 years and those places look completely different today so keep this in mind when playing photospheres. Also Kigali is a bit of a smaller city in just East Africa alone so don't write off African cities based on skylines...you'll be surprised.
This particular picture can't be older than 2019 though

“Gnome bush” but yes it’s pretty funny 😂

Knowing it was the Rwandan flag made that last round so tense

I was literally SO sure it was Gabon lol
I didn't even know they changed their flag
Holy shit, they changed it in 2001?!?! Well, that's the year I graduated high school, so maybe that's why I never noticed. So weird, though!
I find it hilarious that the game keeps the highscore for you, but Toms checks his previous video :D
He'd already started the game. You only see your previous high scores when you're clicking into the map.
@@TeamSlow He could still open a new tab and check the score
The Only way you got Tibet round right is by knowing either the Chinese or Japanese language and knowing the word “西藏” means "Tibet" 14:58, otherwise, it would be difficult. It is easy to tell it is somewhere in China due to the mandatory front and back blue plate with the white font (and only blue unless a special purpose vehicle), It consists of a Chinese letter upfront, with a Latin letter ( And if the letter is A means most important city in the region indicated by the Chinese letter province abbr., B is the second-largest city in that province, etc), then a White dot and then follow either number or Latin letter combinations. This plate is very different than Japanese (you could search for Japanese license plates and Korean and Taiwan etc, it is very hard to confuse with any other Asian pacific countries.) Other hints may be a typical 3 flag pole (if you see big flag poles, it almost has to be three in China, one for the national flag, one for CCP, and one for whatever you intended to hang (for instance the flag for the hotel). If no the two mandatory flags hanging, you are likely to be getting into unwanted trouble by just hanging the hotel flag. Other hints may be the mandatory "green (and green only) color of construction protective sheet" in China. That Tibet in is actually a getable location for Chinese or Japanese, but only because we can read the letter Tibet follow by the letter A next to it, then it has to be somewhere in Lhasa.
If the pic had some small fluffy dogs in it, would have made it easier!
Would you still be able to get a perfect score since the St. Regis didn't look like it was on the map?
I love how Tom apologizes that he hasn't upload in two weeks, Tom... Your training to dribble a ball across the Uk it's fine.
He is undoubtedly falling off though.
You're
L + elevation + Hadrian’s wall is not traversable in one day
It never gets old how mildly surprised Tom is that he is in fact recording.
The burnt out cars are most likely training cars for the fire station. Great viddy as always.
That's what I would of thought tbh
Yeah, you can see small areas of grey burnt grass immediately below suggesting they were on fire and very quickly put out. I lived next to a fire station and this was something they'd regularly do with old cars that were destined to be scrapped.
If you go frame by frame around 17:49 during the zooming out, you can see a glimpse of St. Regis across the big orange road.
omg i saw it
and its one of the cheapest st regis around the world😂
@@georgeviperliu621 You're not wrong. £180 per night and it looks lovely.
That plectrum information is essential. Thank you for sharing this.
I went to that very musuem - it was so sad and moving. I had the great pleasure of visiting Rwanda with my job about 10 years ago.
My main memory of Rwanda was the joy in the faces of all the children I encountered there. The adults carried a wistful sadness, but it really felt like a country that is focused on making the best of the present and future rather than living in the pain of the past.
Zoomed in to Beijing and immediately found a St. Regis hotel, in like 3 seconds, in a 22 million city. At that point you couldn't convince me out of Beijing even if you sent me a postcard from Lhasa. :D
Fair play Tom. I prefer 0.88 millermeters so respect for being a thick boy. Skinny plectrums are for children. 💪
For the Tibet round, the characters on the bus actually give way the clue: "西藏“ means Tibet. And Lhasa is pretty damn popular tourist place.
Stop the cap, they didn't allow me to visit it
@@yoyolol22 probably cause u could only afford a 1 hour stay
“was”
Ominous looking building in that round. Looked like something out of Squid Game, but apparently it's luxury hotel chain.
Don't know much about China and certainly can't read Mandarin, but the clear blue sky and the tourist bus was what drove me to Tibet.
I like how you point out kabouterbos (gnomeforest in dutch) as if its an odd local language and then follow it up by pointing the mouse to the actual local language, papiamento.
i guessed Bhutan for the third one and I was so glad. My theory was that the Chinese tour buses needed to take the tourists somewhere far away that wasn’t reachable by train, and it was also a nicer luxury hotel that could plausibly be in Bhutan I guess. The mountains also helped my case haha
as a heads up - i'm pretty sure countries that are normally on geoguessr (like bhutan) aren't on this map! that might help you out in the future
I don't think you can drive through the Himalayas 😂
There's hardly a stretch of land flat enough to build a hotel like that in Bhutan
Well he guessed hong kong when there are blue and black plates
Here in HK we use white front and yellow blacks lol
@@ticksunbs4944 yea - also Hong Kong as a guess seemed too dense to need a tour bus and the hotels probably aren't as big and spread out there
Interesting to note: That Algerian round was the very same place you had last time. Just a couple dozen meters away. There might be several photospheres from each place.
I believe the one he had last time was on the top of the amphitheater right? That place seemed insanely familiar
The only way I got this was because of Toms previous video, still took awhile to find it, because I only remembered it was Algeria and inland a bit, plonked right on the Arch.

"There has been some real mixing or trading of land there." I always love the down to earth and of the cuff geopolitical / historical remarks
Edit. Wrote this before the Rwanda debacle 😂
Am I right in thinking that Vanuatu used to be the New Hebrides and was jointly ruled by France and Britain? If so, that would explain the 'Rue du Cornwall' and similar names.
I'd love to see you get a perfect score in this game mode but I'm pretty confident that won't happen until you learn your flags! Anyways, smashing video as always mate, best of luck on your Dribbling Britain adventure!
I was not aware Rwanda had changed it's flag. I was still going around giving the trivia question "Which country is the only one to have the first letter of their name on their flag?".
yeah it was changed in 2001
Tom, never change. You’re absolutely my favorite CZcamsr!
Honestly I prefer these types of videos over the higher production videos any day. It’s the reason I’ve subscribed all those years ago!
Still enjoying every upload though. But YOU Tom, are already quality, which makes all your videos high production!
That's sweet
lmao the rwanda flag just staring at u the whole time on the last one was funny
I failed that one by immediately assuming it was Gabon's flag, but apparently the colors were upside down. I knew that the Rwandan flag had a symbol and that it was asymmetrical, so I never even considered it. Looked too much like a regular tricolor.
@@Dayanto i thought it was gabon at first, but then I look around and thought thrres no way it's gabon, so then I went with rwanda
The cars near the fire station were probably used to practice rescues for the firemen. Love the videos and self commentary Tom
The classic catchphrase: "Are we recording?"
yes we are!:D
Tom! I thought of an idea, it would be really funny if you played Geoguessr with verity blindfolded and had Verity explain what she sees for you to guess!

On the 3rd round there was two clues that you missed. 1. The sky was very blue so I ruled out eastern China. 2. There was two 4WD type vehicles (Land Cruiser) so I immediately thought probably Tibet or in that region.
I enjoy these a lot! Keep 'em coming!
Round 1 - Knew this was Suriname by the flag and .sr clue straight away. I am native in Dutch so I could read all the text on the 'Lelydorp Villa' sign on the house. The address of the place was actually on there. It said 'Ta ... {something something} ... weg', with 'weg' meaning 'road'. So I went looking for that in Lelydorp, and found 'Tawajari weg', with a police station on it. I figured the police station was probably the same as the firefighter's station in this small of a place, so I went for the house just left of it on the road that would make sense with the layout of the buildings and roads. I also assumed the compass was wrong, because... well, why would it be right, I mean come on. 5000 points
Round 2 - What on earth? '... in obscure countries', so I guess I'll go for an obscure country? Nothing to go off of here. Could be Georgia, Azerbaijan, Iran, Turkmenistan, Iraq, Uzbekistan, Mongolia even? I took a wild guess and went Uzbekistan, zoomed in and clicked on the very first monument thing I could find. Well, I completely misjudged that, and for some reason I didn't even think of the Roman empire and algeria/tunisia. 241 points
Round 3 - I think that's Chinese writing? I am not too informed on the differences between the older Japanese scripts and Mandarin. The English text next to the supposedly-Chinese text is throwing me off. Maybe Hong Kong? I considered Macao, but I don't think that's considered a country by many places, and I don't think that'll be right. I'll go just north of Hong Kong city. Ah yeah, cool. 1241 points
Round 4 - Saw the Afghanistan flag instantly, so I'll go smack in the middle of Kabul. It looks kind of mountainous enough for it to be Kabul. Not like I care about 50 points more or less at this point, lol. And I'm not about to scan the entire country for 'Salik photography', no thanks. 4730 points, yep, that'll do
Round 5 - I think that's the flag of Gabon? Shit, I've forgotten some international flags that I used to know by heart. I'm quite confident it might be Gabon. I'll have a search for 'Kwibuka' or something. The Gazprom logo to the left of the text is... odd, though... I'll go in the middle of Libreville, because I can't find anything better. The hills don't seem to make sense, nor does the fact that this place seems quite well-off, and I don't think Gabon is... It's also a little too tropical for my liking. OH WELL, LIBREVILLE IT IS 1338 points. Rwanda! Of course.... wait, what?
Total = 12,550 points.

Damn, Tom was in quite the mood for this one 😂
I also love how Tom keeps his sneezes in the video 😂😂
I wounder how many American viewers gave him a "bless you"? I know I did and I was waiting for Tom to say "thank you." Unfortunately he being British did not have the foggiest what I am say to him through my computer screen :)
@@robertmeyer8221 "bless you" in response to sneezes goes back at least to the romans. It's not an american thing, we say it in Britain too.
@@stormx2827 Typical Americans thinking the world revolves around them 😂
@@CJM527 Yes, clearly robertmeyer8221 is confused. A whole year has gone by and nobody has bothered to explain to them that it's not the world that revolves, but everything else around the flat earth. I fkin die everytime at the music tom decides to choose for his timelapse clips
8:22 it is labelled incorrectly, the house is just down the second left on the road where the location is tagged and the fire station is the building below the house on the map
Figured! That's where I went, but when I was 100 yards away, confusion kicked in...
You do not have to apologize for anything because your videos are always amazing and fun to watch.
I got 5,000 for the last round. Knew the flag, figured out the meaning of the number 25, then it was just a matter of finding the place. 17,837 in total. Great video, by the way!
I first learned that Suriname used to be a Dutch dependency when I heard back in the 80s that Dutch 100-metre sprinter goddess Nelli Cooman was born in Suriname. Which also reveals how old I am ;)
Your Rwanda mishap let me back in the door after I went Syria in round 2 (the temple looked more Hellenistic than Roman), came out with 17,762! In better news, I've been working on a new map for weeks with quality, accurately-compassed photospheres and carefully-chosen street view rounds in every single country, I'll let you know when I'm finally done.
I did get Rwanda from the flag, and I've lived in China for a decade (trying hard to get out now), so I did get China in the final round, although nowhere near Lhasa
A good way to differentiate Roman and Hellenistic ruins is the usage of archways, bricks and round shapes. Ancient Greek buildings generally don’t use brick or have arches, while Roman ones do. The one you see in the picture is a so-called triumphal arch, which were monuments the Romans built in honor of the emperor in regions they conquered. They are specifically Roman and the Greeks never built them (nor did any other ancient civilization). Hope this bit of random trivia helps you next time!
just wanted to say that your videos make me really happy, love ya sm

Dude I was thinking an hour ago about how long it's been since the last upload, now we get a new upload 🤩
"Kabouterbos.. definitely some old language that still got an influence here"
It's actually perfectly modern Dutch. :) Kabouter = gnome, bos = forest. But yeah, kabouter doesn't sound very Germanic.
Nothing indigenous in any case. The Dutch nicked the island from the Spanish in 1634.
I’ve been playing more geoguesser lately and I cannot die the life of me get the scores you’re getting! You’re a true wizard
Dont trust compass on photospheres Tom! If you upload coverage you can't tell the compass direction there, so it is random.
I didn't know it was Rwanda specifically, but I was very confident that it was in Africa based just on the Kwibuka word.

The burnt out cars are for training the firefighters on how to rescue people from wrecks. They have some near my local firestation.
Looks like those cars are used as training props for fireman to do extractions and put out fires. I've seen similar at airports with cutaway planes/helicopters near the fire stations.
